Class Projects |
| The class is organized around a series
of projects. The first project will be a group effort
and students will be assessed as a group. The second project
will
be an individual effort. In addition, continuously through
the semester, each student will be keeping a journal of responses
to readings. |
| One purpose of the class will be to provide
training necessary to successfully complete these projects.
We will focus on technical problems (use of specialized software
required to produce web pages, for example) and on larger intellectual
problems (how to identify useful papers from the scientific
literature, to analyze the work presented in those papers and
use them to explore a scientific issue). |

1. |
Journal wiki |
| |
|
A "wiki" is a collaborative web site that allows
readers to easily edit or create web pages for immediate
use by
others. Each student will keep a journal of responses to
papers read during the semester. |
| |
2. |
Group wiki
pages |
| |
|
Within the wiki groups of students will create pages
summarizing the state of knowledge about a variety of aspects
of transcription and its regulation in eukaryotes. Though
coordinated as a group site, each student will work individually
on a specific sub-topic. |

4. |
Individual
web page |
| |
|
During the final third of
the course, each student will produce a individual web
page dealing with some aspect of translation or translational
control. These pages will offer an in-depth analysis of
the scientific literature relevant to the topic. |
