ABSTRACT - The Gadwall is a dabbling duck with a wide distribution that extends across Europe, Asia, and North America.  In this study, we address 2 primary questions: (1) do genetic differences exist between the Old World and the New World; (2) does population genetic structure exist within North America. We examined genetic variation using 658 bp of DNA from domains 1 and 2 of the mitochondrial control region of 140 Gadwall from Europe, Asia, and North America (including 5 populations).  Although distinct genetic differences (i.e., reciprocal monophyly) were not observed, there was significant genetic structure between the Old World and New World.  Evidence suggests that Gadwall recently colonized North America from Europe and/or Asia, but more intensive sampling is needed to confirm this pattern.  Within North America, significant genetic structure exists between the Alaskan population and “core” North American breeding populations.  This genetic structure may reflect the philopatric behavior of female Gadwall.  Nuclear DNA is needed to determine whether male biased dispersal prevents further differentiation among populations.
