Spring Ligi

Research Interests
Possible Multiple Brooding in Orioles

Research Abstract

Spring Ligi is doing her masters degree on oriole behavior.  Specifically, she is investigating whether the two migratory oriole species that breed in Maryland may have multiple broods.  Prior to our research project, there were no documented examples of double brooding in either Orchard Orioles or Baltimore Orioles.  Last field season (2004) we documented three likely cases of double brooding in Orchard Orioles.  Spring is focusing special attention on whether Baltimore Orioles may also occasionally have second broods.  We think this an excellent opportunity to learn more about an important aspect of the life history of our state bird.
