Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need
We have received a grant from the US Department of Education's Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Program. The GAANN program is coordinated by Lasse Lindahl (Department Chair) and Philip Farabaugh (Chair of the Graduate Programs Committee). The grant provides four fellowships to assist PhD students with excellent records who demonstrate financial need. GAANN fellowships are limited to citizens, permanent residents, or those who demonstrate an intention to become a permanent resident. Women and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
A Stipend of $30,000
Students admitted any of the department's PhD programs can be considered for support of up to $30,000 per year under the GAANN grant. Support is need-based, meaning that we can provide support from this source up to the level of financial need as defined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The department is committed to supplementing support for students who are not eligible for the full level of GAANN support to this stipend level from other resources.
Training Opportunities under GAANN

Students admitted to the GAANN program will be provided with additional opportunities for training beginning with a summer bridge program.

  • A research rotation in a faculty laboratory during the summer bridge program accelerates integration of GAANN students into research in the department
  • An intensive writing workshop hones skills students need to succeed in classes and in research
  • Frequent meetings of the program coordinators with GAANN fellows help students navigate the unfamiliar culture of graduate education
  • At a yearly GAANN retreat fellows and faculty evaluate the programs successes and address any problems
Other GAANN Programs at UMBC
Two other UMBC GAANN programs were funded in 2003: in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The three GAANN programs coordinate their efforts to improve PhD education at UMBC.
