New Faculty

The newest member of the Biological Sciences faculty is Dr. Rachel Brewster. Her research concerns the development of the central nervous system. She uses zebrafish as her model system for this work.

Awards to Departmental Faculty

Two of our faculty were recently honored with prestigious awards. Dr. Suzanne Rosenberg was named the first Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Chair in Biochemistry. Dr. J. Lynn Zimmerman received a Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring from the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.

New Research Initiatives

Dr. Brian Bradley's research on proteins expressed in response to environmental stresses was recently profiled in the Life Sciences Campaign Newsletter. Dr. Bradley hopes to develop tools called "Protein Expression Signatures" that could predict the type of pollutant present in the environment.

A mentor of many

Dr. Zimmerman was also recently named Presidential Teaching Professor for 2001-2004.

UMBC Aquamen

Professor Tom Cronin and graduate student Alex Cheroske were profiled for their work as part of the crew of the Aquarius, an underwater research vessel off the Florida Keys.
