Proteomics: Brian Bradley

Proteomics, particularly the expression of specific sets of proteins in response to environmental conditions, is the research theme in Dr. Brian Bradley’s lab. His research group uses the proteins to detect environmental hazards. “We focus on diagnosis or prognosis of stress by examining multiple
proteins in Protein Expression Signatures,” says Bradley, who has been a faculty member in the Biological Sciences Department since 1970. “In principle, we can detect a component stressor—chemical or biological—in a complex environment.”

The many applications of Proteomics have generated significant interest in Bradley’s research, which is supported by funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, Oakridge National Labs, the Department of Defense (U.S. Army), and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sea Grant. Two patents protect the technology and a third one is pending. “We use multiple indicators as opposed to single indicators used now, which makes it more powerful,” explains Bradley.

Recent applications by the lab include determining what makes mussels and oysters ill and using soil organisms to identify chemicals that may harm the health of deployed troops.
