Sanjeev Ahuja
Graduate Faculty

Sanjeev Ahuja joined the Biotechnology program as an instructor in 2008. As Senior Scientist in MedImmune’s Process Cell Culture department in Gaithersburg, MD, he manages process development, scale up, scale down, commercial support, and technology development in support of mammalian cell culture processes. He is equally involved in applying statistical principles to development of cell culture processes and data mining techniques to enhance the understanding of commercial bioprocesses. Prior to joining MedImmune, Dr. Ahuja had had extensive experience in various aspects of development and commercialization of upstream processes including bacterial fermentation, mammalian cell culture, and associated primary recovery unit operations at Biogen Idec, Human Genome Sciences, and Baxter Healthcare Corporation.

Dr. Ahuja received his M.S. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from UMBC. He primarily teaches BTEC 652: Applied Bioprocess Engineering. Additionally, he is Six Sigma certified, has one patent, and is published in a variety of journals.

Sheldon BroedelSheldon Broedel

Sheldon Broedel, a member of the UMBC faculty since 2008, has a combined 33 years of industry and academic experience. He is a founder/CEO/CSO of Athena Environmental Sciences, Inc., a diversified biotechnology company that specializes in designing, developing and manufacturing bio-based products. Under the Athena Enzyme Systems™ brand, the company makes and sells a line of biotools designed to improve the expression and recovery of recombinant proteins. Additionally, Dr. Broedel has held research and management positions with Martin Marietta Laboratories (now Lockheed-Martin), Dorlin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (formerly ChekTec Corporation). In 2005, Dr. Broedel received UMBC’s Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award. He has a diverse range of scientific publications, holds five issued patents, and has designed, reduced to practice and launched more than 160 products. Dr. Broedel and his development teams have received ten SBIR grant awards for their work with infectious diseases, environmental products and diagnostic tests. Athena currently has a portfolio of over 500 products serving world-wide biotechnology and consumer markets.

Dr. Broedel completed his B.S. in Biology at the State University of New York at Geneseo and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Microbial Genetics at UMBC. He also holds positions as the Associate Graduate Program Director and Instructor for the MPS: Biotechnology at UMBC and as an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Dr. Federici has over 25 years of experience in the biotechnology industry. She has held various positions of increasing managerial responsibilities in several different biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. She is an expert in protein structural analysis, bioanalytical method development and biopharmaceutical product formulation development and manufacturing. During her tenure in several companies, Dr.Federici frequently had the responsibility for developing, presenting, and defending product approval strategies to the FDA and various international regulatory agencies. Dr. Federici was a contributing author of ICH Q6B international guidelines on biotechnology specifications and several industry position papers on product comparability and bioanaytical methodologies.

Marcia is currently self-employed as a biotechnology consultant. She authors regulatory documents for investigational drugs and license applications and provides expert advice on biopharmaceutical drug development and regulatory approval strategies.

Toby GoukerToby Gouker

Toby Gouker, an adjunct with UMBC since 2011, has over 33 years of management experience in industry and academia. Currently serving as a Principal for Two BG Consulting, Dr. Gouker advises various educational institutions and professional associations on training and education program development.  Previously, he was the Director of Operations at Certisusa where he managed several biotech facilities, an Engineering Research and Development Manager at W.R. Grace & Co commercializing power plant and other source air pollution control products, and a Project Leader at Exxon Research and Engineering Co.

Dr. Gouker's additionally has served as the Provost at Lyman Spalding Institute, where led the effort to build a global continuing education program for scientists and engineers to ensure pharmaceutical workforce capacity, the Vice President of University Affairs at American Graduate University, where he functioned as the lead academic and operating officer and Executive Director at Laureate Education, Inc. where he led National Technological University through its merger with Walden University.

Dr. Gouker received his Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences from Walden University, his M.B.A. at the University of Houston, and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Gouker is also an Adjunct Faculty member at American Graduate University and DeVry University.

Anita Griner has been with UMBC since 2007. Specializing in project management consultation and instruction, Ms. Griner currently serves as the Deputy Director for the Data Sharing & Partnership Group at the Center for Program Integrity at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Her current programs include the ACA 6002 National Physician Payment Reporting Program: OPENPAYMENTS and the Healthcare Fraud Prevention Partnership (HFPP). She previously was a Project Manager at Maricom Systems, IBM, and Applied Digital Solutions where she has trained and consulted with private, State and Federal government clients. Ms. Griner is Project Management Professional (PMP) certified through the national Project Management Institute.

Ms. Griner received her B.A. from UMBC in Organizational/Personnel Psychology and her M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore. She is a member of the Project Management Institute and actively serves on various project management focus groups and practice teams to develop and implement project management guidelines and standards. She has been named the HHS Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service and the CMS CIO’s Citation Award for Project Management.

Antonio MoreiraAntonio Moreira

Antonio Moreira is the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and a professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. Moreira has both previous (Schering-Plough Corporation) and ongoing biotechnology industry contacts and experience. He draws from first-hand work in research and development, scale-up and introduction to commercialization of biotechnology products, such alpha interferon. Dr. Moreira has an active research program in bioprocess engineering and is a consultant to various biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

He has received various awards including a NATO Senior Fellowship and the James Aggalloco Award from the Parenteral Drug Association. He served as the President for the Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering; he is immediate past-chair of the Council for Biotechnology Centers for the BIO Industry Organization, and serves on scientific advisory boards for various organizations. Dr. Moreira is Chairman of Peritus Consultants, Inc. an international consulting corporation. He is also a graduate of Leadership Maryland, class of 1998.

He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto in Portugal and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Moreira is the Graduate Program Director for the Graduate Certificate in Biochemical Regulatory Engineering. He currently teaches BTEC 660: Regulatory Issues in Biotechnology and BTEC 662: Good Manufacturing Practices and Bioprocesses.

Timothy WoodTimothy Wood

Timothy Wood is currently employed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center as supervisor of the Department of Clinical Investigation, Research Operations Service Chemistry Section. His work is diverse and includes a variety of interests involving basic, translational, and applied chemistry research. His principal strengths include conducting collaborative and independent research using microbiological, molecular biology, structural biology and biochemistry techniques with significant experience in gene cloning, transcription regulation, recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization through mutational analysis, functional assays and troubleshooting.

Dr. Wood’s previous research experience includes training and post-doctoral work in macromolecular crystallography at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and The Skaggs Institute of Chemical Biology located in La Jolla, California. While at TSRI, Wood’s primary focus was on understanding the chemical mechanism of chromophore synthesis of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). He also worked on bacterial proteins involved in bacterial stress responses and pathogenesis. Wood’s interest in bacterial pathogenesis began in graduate school at UMBC where he studied gene regulation under Dr. Richard E. Wolf, Jr.

Dr. Wood completed his B.S. in Biochemistry at Grove City College and his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at UMBC. He currently teaches BTEC 650: Applied Biochemistry.
