NATURE OF WORK: A Social Work Supervisor, Family Services is the supervisory level of professional social work providing preventive or protective services to vulnerable adults, children and families. Cases involve suspected child abuse or neglect, out of home placement, guardianship or emergency protective orders, adoption or adult case management. Employees in this classification supervise lower-level social workers. Employees in this class may be required to work evenings and on weekends and may be required to provide supervision to on-call coverage staff. Work is generally performed in an office setting but may be performed in customer’s homes, schools, hospitals and other community settings. Employees may be required to deal with potentially hazardous situations.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Work involves planning, coordinating, supervising and evaluating the work of child welfare caseworkers, instructing staff in policies and procedures, and developing training plans for subordinate staff. Work also involves, supervising the investigation of customers and other individuals to obtain necessary information in cases concerning suspected child abuse or neglect, out of home placement, guardianship or emergency protective orders or adoptions; approves case management records and reports, evaluative reports and recommendations to the courts and other agencies and institutions regarding individual case situations; uses database applications to record, research and track information on cases for compliance with laws, regulations and standards. This position may represent the agency at meetings with public and private agencies and community groups.


While the State is under a cost containment policy and positions are filled through an approved exception process, DHR internal transfers and transfers as a result of a demotion will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you are in State service and are a promotional candidate, your salary will be determined in accordance with the State of Maryland Salary Guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS
Masters in Social Work and three years of experience providing child welfare or adult services to vulnerable children, individuals or families. Employees in this classification are required to be licensed as a certified social worker or certified social worker-clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners for a period of 18 months as specified by the Board prior to appointment to social work supervisors positions in State service.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE CLASSIFICATION:
Employees who have not already done so must complete an approved training program and pass a competency test before being granted permanent employment status.
Employees are required to meet mandatory standards for continuing education as determined by the Department of Human Resources. Employees who fail to obtain the required continuing education credits shall be subject to disciplinary action including demotion, suspension and dismissal.
Employees in this classification may be required to provide the employer with a telephone number at which they can be reached.
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
