The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) employs as staff of over 6,000 people at our new office facility in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. USPTO employees support the major functions of the examination and issuance of patents and the registration of trademarks. The focus of this Job Fair is to recruit highly skilled, motivated individuals to become Patent Examiners

The educational requirement for a Patent Examiner position is a Bachelor of Science or higher degree, in one or more engineering or science disciplines, in particular electrical, computer, chemical, chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, mechanical, and bio-medical. Effective oral and written communication skills are a must and will be assessed as a party of your application for the job. U.S. Citizenship is also required.

As a Patent Examiner, you will recommend or decide whether the U.S. government will grant exclusive rights to patent applications for their inventions. You will receive both formal and hands-on training on the legal and technical requirements for the patent. Your responsibilities will include doing research in the field of technology of that assigned patent application, performing technical and legal patent analysis, and generating a written report to the patent applicant of your findings. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Offices is a performance-based organization; therefore, your performance ratings and awards package are based upon established quality, timeliness, and productivity measures.
