GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Igert Fellows Program

In Optical Techniques for Actuation, Sensing, and Imaging of Biological Systems (BioIGERT).
You can learn more about BioIGERT at our website at www.bioigert.columbia.edu, including a detailed list of participating faculty and links to the on-line admissions applications.

The aim of the program is to train a new generation of scientists and engineers through a set of five multidisciplinary research thrusts: novel imagers for microscopy and active high-throughput microarrays; in vivo studies of gene expression and protein-protein interactions with novel molecular probes; optical techniques for manipulating cells and studying cell motility and growth; optical imaging of activity in neural circuits; and novel functional imaging systems for small animal and human tissues. Each BioIGERT Fellow will be empowered to work at the boundaries between disciplines and will be uniquely capable of contributing to advancements in this important emerging field.

Fellowship support from the National Science Foundation includes full tuition and fees and a stipend of $30,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year. Approximately 8-10 new fellowships are awarded each year.

This fellowship is open to any student (U.S. citizen or permanent resident) who is applying to a doctoral-tracked program in one of the participating departments at Columbia: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or Physics.
