Career Week @ UMBC

March 2nd-6th 2009

UMBC's second annual Career Week offers an opportunity for current students to “get connected to the rest of the world” and “explore their professional options” through presentations, workshops and one-on-one mentoring with alumni and employers.

In today's economic climate, now more than ever, it is important for UMBC students to begin exploring their career options as early as freshman and sophomore years. However, what may not be as obvious is the relationship between academic major and career options. Career Week is designed to bridge the gap. Each event has the potential to speak to the needs of any student, no matter the student's status in the career development process – from undecided major to graduating senior.

Check out the types of events lined up for this year and create your own Career Week schedule! Attend as many or as few events that make sense for where you are in planning your career path.

Types of events to Attend

Career Conversations Check out these 50-minute workshops focused on various career topics presented by experts from the field and campus community.

Alumni Panel Discussions Hear UMBC alumni talk about their stories of personal success and the not so linear career paths that they have taken.

Mock Interviews and Resume Reviews Work one-on-one with an employer or alumna/us to discuss your two most valuable marketing tools – your interviewing skills and your resume. Sessions will last 20 minutes. Registration is advised. Walk-ins are welcome.

Spring Career Fair Attend the last major career fair of the academic year, with employers looking to hire at all levels, part-time to intern to entry level to experienced.

Majors Fair For the undeclared, undecided or transitioning majors, visit the Ballroom Lounge and talk to representatives from the various academic departments that coincide with the careers and employers represented at the Spring Career Fair.

Art Symposium This 2-hour event, including a panel discussion and portfolio reviews, is organized for students majoring in or considering the arts

Networking Events and Skill-building Seminars From business networking and etiquette, to financial literacy, these interactive sessions are designed to enhance your strengths in various areas. Registration is required for each of these evening events.

Now celebrating our 10th anniversary, Women For Hire will feature dozens of top employers who are on the lookout for smart and savvy women like you at our first event of 2009.

In a tough job market, nothing beats face-to-face contact between job seekers and employers. Online websites and job boards are fine tools, but any career coach will tell you that the single best way to get a job is to get in front of decision-makers.

For over a decade, Women For Hire has proven time and time again that women stand a much better chance of landing the jobs they want when they have a high-caliber, professional forum to network with other women, get free advice on their resumes and meet one-on-one with America's top employers.

These are difficult and anxious times—and some experts continue to beat the drum of negativity by saying virtually no companies are hiring. That is simply not true.

Which is why on Feb. 19 you'll find top employers across all industries eager to hire qualified women and get others in their pipeline at Women For Hire's Washington, D.C. expo.
