Engineering Scholarship

LAUREL (March 2, 2009): The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) is looking for budding engineers in Prince George's and Montgomery counties. For the fourth consecutive year, the Commissioners are offering a $1,000 scholarship to a Prince George's County or
Montgomery County, college student majoring in engineering.

The maturing WSSC workforce and the on-going need to replace and maintain an aging infrastructure will create many opportunities in the water and wastewater profession, especially in engineering. Commission Chair Joyce Starks of Prince George's County views the scholarship as an excellent opportunity to identify potential hires to meet WSSC's need for engineers. She has spearheaded the scholarship initiative for several years. The first scholarship was awarded in 2006.

"Inspiring young local engineers to enter the field of water and wastewater management is vital to the Commission and its ability to provide essential water services to the Sanitary District," according to Chair Starks.

In addition to the $1,000 cash award, the scholarship winner may be offered the chance to gain valuable on-the-job experience working as a paid WSSC summer intern.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must:

* Attend a Maryland university/college and have a permanent home
address in Prince George's or Montgomery County;
* Be enrolled in an engineering degree program that 1) leads at a
minimum, to a Bachelor of Science in Engineering; or 2) an advanced
degree in engineering.
* Past winners are also eligible to compete.

Applicants should submit the following materials with a cover letter:
1. Proof of permanent residency in the WSSC district (a legal
document such as a passport, driver's license);
2. A recent transcript
3. Two references
4. A 400-1000 word essay written by the applicant on any topic of
importance to engineering, water/wastewater engineering, or the role of
a water utility in the 21st century.

Applications should be submitted to Charlett Bundy, Esq., Corporate Secretary, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, 14501 Sweitzer Lane, Laurel, MD 20707, or, email/fax Ms. Bundy at cbundy@wsscwater.com. cbundy@wsscwater.com> Applications must be postmarked by June 30, 2009. A panel of three managers will select the winner who will be notified prior to the award announcement at the July Commission meeting.

The six WSSC Commissioners set policy for and oversee operations of WSSC and its more than 1,400 employees. In addition to Chair Starks the other Commissioners are Vice - chair Gene W. Counihan, Adrienne A. Mandel and Dr. Roscoe M. Moore, Jr. of Montgomery County and Prem P. Agarwal and Dr. Juanita D. Miller of Prince George's County.
