The Career Services Center surveys UMBC students each semester to learn more about the part-time jobs students work while in school. Last spring, the average on-campus job hourly wage was $9.55, while the average hourly rate for off-campus jobs was $10.85. Of the students who responded, the average worked between 15-17 hours per week. We'll be sending out this survey again this semester; keep your eyes peeled later this month and share your part-time work experience!

The WRP provides students with disabilities in all fields of study the opportunity to market their abilities to a wide variety of potential employers across the United States, sharpen their interviewing skills during a required one-on-one meeting with a WRP recruiter, and gain valuable skills, experience, and contacts on the job.
Applicants for the program must:

- have graduated from such an institution within the past year.
The WRP is run on an annual basis and requires student applicants to have an interview with one of our recruiters during an on-campus recruitment visit.

Preparing your first résumé can be a daunting task: You've got little work history to share and you're unsure about what else you need to include. Ultimately, it's important to convey your skills and eagerness to land your first job to employers, say experts. Most employers won't expect you to be an expert and are just looking for a concisely written one-page sheet that accurately shows off your skills and potential.

May Grads: What Are You Doing after Graduation?
UMBC has begun asking May and August 2010 graduates to contribute to the Graduating Student Report so the campus can get a better sense of the post graduation plans of the Class of 2010. Check out last year's results here. All students who complete the report will be entered into a prize drawing.
Graduating students can contribute to the report via the link in the personal email they received or can contribute directly to the report by visiting: http://careers.umbc.edu/gradrep .
Here we are just a few weeks from graduation and although companies are hiring a bit more this year, it's still a tough market, according to CareerBuilder's annual job forecast.
How many graduates will make careless and thoughtless mistakes trying to find their first full-time job? It's downright shocking the blunders many applicants make when looking for work. They should know better.
To read the rest of the article and learn more about the importance of making a good first impression click here.
On Thursday, May 27 at noon Michelle Singletary, Washington Post Columnist, and Ellen Gordon Reeves, author of Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview?, will be hosting a live online chat. They invite new graduates with questions about the job search process to attend. It can be found at washingtonpost.com/discussions.

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities (WRP) is a recruitment and referral program that connects public and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs.
- have a disability AND
- be a U.S. citizen AND
- be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education on a substantially full-time basis (unless the severity of the disability precludes the student from taking a substantially full-time load) to seek a degree OR
- be enrolled in such an institution as a degree-seeking student taking less than a substantially full-time load in the enrollment period immediately prior to graduation OR
- have graduated from such an institution within the past year.
The WRP is run on an annual basis and requires student applicants to have an interview with one of our recruiters during an on-campus recruitment visit.
The interviews for summer and permanent positions will take place during at UMBC on February 11, 2010. Interested and eligible students will need to take the following steps:
1.) Upload your resume to your UMBCworks account (login via the Jobs & Internships Topic in myUMBC). After uploading, students must have their resume reviewed by a UMBC Career Specialist in the Career Services Center in Math/Psychology 212. Walk-in hourse are M-F, 2-4pm.
2.) Schedule a time with a UMBC Career Specialist to practice interview techniques and self-advocacy skills. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 410.455.2216.
3.) Visit https://wrp.gov/registerstudent to fill out your application for the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP). You must fill out your application directly into the WRP database via a student registration portal and complete your entire application online.
4.) We suggest you have someone in the UMBC Career Center carefully look over your application before you submit it. This will be competitive and your resume, application, and interview must be top notch.
