The Dance Department remembers Rebecca Jung ('87) who lost her battle with cancer on September 6, 2011. Becky performed with Phoenix Dance Company (now called Baltimore Dance Project,) UMBC's professional dance company in residence, and also Baltimore-based modern dance company, Naked Feet. After graduating, she moved to New York and joined renowned company, Pilobolus, and worked with them for seven years as performer and collaborative choreographer, touring all over the world. She appeared in commercials, fashion shows, operas, and in Marilyn Manson's video "Beautiful People."
Over the years, Becky would occasionally drop in to take class at UMBC, which was a thrill for our students. As a teacher, she shared the unique techniques of Pilobolus as well as her sense of humor. Many UMBC dancers had the opportunity to take master classes with her.
Elizabeth Walton says, "I will always remember Becky's joyful smile."
I recall when Becky first came to UMBC she planned to study engineering, and to have a career in aerospace engineering. But dance swept her up. In dancing with Pilobolus and later with Lisa Giobbi Movement Theatre, whose choreography involved dancers suspended in space with trapeze and elastic bands, I'd say, she had an amazing career in 'aerospace engineering.'
