Dr. Julie Little to Deliver Conference Keynote

Dr. Julie Little, Ed.D will present the keynote address at the MEEC Annual conference. The title of her presentation is; Innovation in Action: New Learning Environments for the 21st Century. Dr. Little has devoted more than twenty years to exploring the effective integration of information technologies in the Academy's teaching, learning, and research practices. Shared through national and international forums, her research interests focus on faculty development, facilitating communications and collaboration in distributed learning environments, and designing effective uses of instructional technologies.

ABSTRACT:
As we discover more about the way that people learn, the challenge is to design inquiry-driven learning environments focused on knowledge creation while moving outside the box of four-walls to access virtual experiences and content. And, while shaped by a lifetime of technological innovation, today’s learner seamlessly moves around virtual spaces creating, sharing, and communicating; however, impulse does not translate into purpose and fluidity does not equate to literacy. How can K-20 education leverage our understanding of learning, the experiences of today’s learner, and emerging technologies—from wikis and blogs to social networks and cyberinfrastructure—to build learning ecologies where students are encouraged to think critically and work collaboratively and content is generated and exchanged?

Creating new learning environments that promote active learning, critical thinking, collaborative learning, and knowledge creation, and reaching and engaging today's students have been two of the five issues at the forefront of the EDUCAUSE Top Teaching and Learning Challenges Project (http://www.educause.edu/eli/challenges). During this presentation, Dr. Little will cast a spotlight on ways to engage today’s learners and prepare them to thrive in the 21st century. Activate your imagination. Join the dialogue.

Enable Learning Anytime, Anywhere via Video Collaboration
Randy Weeter, AVAYA hosted by Alliance Technology Group
Traditional video conferencing in education has gain strong acceptance yet has been challenged by its high cost, lack of ease of use, limited interoperability and limited availability. With the growing demand for online, hybrid and distance learning options, it is imperative that these challenges be addressed to allow school districts and higher education institutions to expand video-enable learning opportunities beyond the traditional seat based classroom. Now with the pervasive use of smart phones, tablets, laptops, net-books and other forms of mobile devices with trends showing that the average student carries 2-4 internet and video ready devices, the time is right to incorporate a more pervasive video-enable learning style to the pedagogy. If done correctly, video collaboration over these devices can become the launching point of your institution’s or district’s transformation. This session will discuss a more cost effective approach to achieve a pervasive video-enabled learning strategy that will engage your students on a more personalized basis while seamlessly integrating with your institution’s or district’s Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) strategy. Presenting, archiving and re-broadcast, all key portions of curriculum delivery will be discussed from a BYOD context.

Configuring and Maximizing the iPad Classroom
Lisa Capan, CCBC and Darrow Neves, CCBC
Setting up an iPad classroom is not quite as 'plug-n-play' as one might think. In this session, we will discuss the trials, tribulations, and lessons learned at setting up an Apple iPad Classroom. During the presentation, a demonstration of maximizing the interactivity possibilities for faculty and students will be showcased.

Leveraging your Microsoft Assets
Jamie Bakert and Yanni Chryssomitis, Microsoft
Leveraging Your Microsoft Assets – Educational organizations everywhere are increasingly being asked to do more with less and to work with stagnating or even decreasing budgets. The Microsoft contract that MEEC has negotiated on behalf of its membership is comprehensive and oftentimes includes product functionality for which you are paying separate and extra license and maintenance fees. Please join your Microsoft account team and learn the details of everything that you have licensed and what you can be leveraging to help save your organization money. In this conversation, we will discuss:
• The Educational Desktop – Windows and Office
• The Enterprise CAL – access to the various server software suites, such as Windows Server, Exchange Server, Sharepoint and more
• MDOP – Desktop optimization and the ability to virtualize applications, desktops and even user profiles
