September 26, 2014JoyAnne Amani & FriendsSunday, February 15 | 3:00 p.m. Collaborative artist, pianist, music director and teacher JoyAnne Amani presents, in collaboration with colleagues, a program entitled Mozart, Margaret, Moses and Me. “February is the month,” shares the artist, “in which we focus on three themes: the contributions of African Americans to our society; love; and Women’s Heart Health. Michael Richards, joined by the Trio des Alpes (Mirjam Tschopp, violin and viola; Claude Hauri, cello; and Corrado Greco, piano). The program will feature: Mirjam Tschopp, who gave her debut as a soloist aged 13, is equally successful on the violin and the viola, appearing as a soloist with renowned orchestras such as the WDR Symphonieorchester Köln under Semyon Bychkov and in chamber music with Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Mandelring Quartet, among others. Claude Hauri has made his name as solo cellist of several excellent groups such as the Ensemble Nuovo Contrappunto in Florence and the Ensemble Algoritmo in Rome, and as a performer of new music. He has premiered a multitude of works, several dedicated to him, by important composers. Corrado Greco’s versatility adds further impetus to the Trio des Alpes. Besides performing with such personalities as Bruno Canino ormembers of the Berliner Philharmoniker, he is professor of musical communication and multimedia in Varese, where he also directs the Università dell’Insubria concert series. Trio des Alpes – Rush Hour Concert with UMBC FacultyFriday, November 21 | 4:30 p.m. The UMBC Department of Music wishes to thank UMBC faculty and staff for their extraordinary commitment to the campus to begin the Thanksgiving holiday season at this free concert in the beautiful new concert hall! “Individually excellent, they are even more impressive together,” wrote the Gazzetta di Mantova after a concert by the Italian-Swiss Trio des Alpes, thereby describing one of this Trio’s essential qualities: three independent, all-round successful personalities meeting as a trio. What attracts them is the quintessence of chamber music: dialogue, a shared sound and the blending of three instruments into a single whole. In this special “Rush Hour” concert, the Trio will be joined by UMBC faculty E. Michael Richards (clarinet), Airi Yoshioka (violin), and Christian Tremblay (violin) in performances of the Clarinet Trio, Op. 114 by Johannes Brahms, and the Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, by Antonín Dvořák. Livewire: Ensemble LaboratoriumSaturday, October 18 | 8:00 p.m. The Department of Music’s Livewire festival presents the Ensemble Laboratorium, which will perform a collection of movements from single work, also entitled Laboratorium, by renowned composer Vinko Globokar. Inspired by their time spent working together under the direction of Pierre Boulez at the 2004 Lucerne Festival Academy, a group of young musicians formed Laboratorium. Hailing from 15 countries on 5 continents, its members are especially interested in the study and interpretation of both the established and the obscure repertoire of the 20th & 21st centuries. Likewise they are actively commissioning new works as well as engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations with artists from other fields. The ensemble’s debut performances were presented at the 2005 Lucerne Festival Academy and the 2005 Festival de Musica Contemporanea de Alicante (Spain). Critically acclaimed performances, including, in March 2007, the Lucerne Festival at Easter and a concert in Madrid’s famous Nuevo Auditorio del Museo Reina Sofia, as well as a sold out performance in May 2007 in Basel’s Gare du Nord, followed these inaugural concerts. Laboratorium completed 2007 with a successful Chilean tour presenting performances in Santiago at the XVII Festival de Musica Contemporanea Chilena and in La Serena at the Festival Musicahora. In 2008 and 2009 the ensemble was invited to the prestigious Tage für Neue Musik in Zürich, Switzerland. Since 2009 Laboratorium has been Ensemble-in-Residence at the Davos Festival, Switzerland, focusing on the presentation and promotion of new music. A successful US tour with concerts in New York City and at the June in Buffalo Festival was a highlight of the 2010 season. In 2009 Laboratorium began a residency at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano. Activities of the 2011/2012 season included a return to the Davos Festival and Basel´s Gare du Nord, another appearance in the Tage für Neue Musik in Zürich’s Tonhalle, a CD recording with newly commissioned works, a concert in the Berliner Philharmonie in the Debut concert series of Deutschlandradio Kultur and a staged performance of Vinko Globokar’s Laboratorium at KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen, Hannover. $15 general admission Tickets are available online at MissionTix. Livewire: Patrick Crossland, TromboneFriday, October 17 | 8:00 p.m. Presented as part of the Livewire new music festival, trombonist Patrick Crossland performs major works from the contemporary music repertoire, including: • Rene Leibowitz: Quatre Bagatelles pour trombone et piano (1963) Patrick Crossland was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Growing up in southern Louisiana, he began playing trombone at age 10. He has worked closely with several prominent composers. Solo performances include the Walker Art Center’s “Festival Dancing In Your Head” (2001, 2002, 2005), the Darmstadt Course for New Music (2004, 2006, 2008), where he was awarded a Solo Performance Prize, and the “Utopia Jetzt!” Festival (Germany) where he performed his acclaimed “V for Grock” multimedia recital. In 2009 he premiered his “Krieg dem Krieg” project featuring thematic works for trombone and electronics. In addition to his activities as a soloist and chamber musician, he is an avid improviser, working with a wide range of musicians, dancers, and actors. He is a member of the Composers Slide Quartet, Ensemble Laboratorium, and Zinc & Copper Works.
