OIT will be shutting down its Usenet News server, news.umbc.edu, on August 31, 2007.
OIT has provided Usenet News service for the UMBC community since the late '80s. However, with the advent of new technologies, the usage of our usenet news service has dwindled to a few users a day -- well below the usage level that justifies continued support of the service.
Even though UMBC is discontinuing this service, UMBC users still have multiple paths to access Usenet News, such as http://groups.google.com/ or the University System of Maryland's Usenet server by setting their NNTP server to news.ums.edu.
