Continuing Saga of Ftp1

ftp1.umbc.edu's disk finally died today. Died completely, it wouldn't even show up on a SCSI bus.

So, attempt #1 at recovering it involved installing a new disk, then pulling the ProFTP build and configs off of backup. Well, as it turns out, while 'ftp1' was configured in our Legato configuration, it had never been associated with a schedule... and never had been backed up.

Plan B. Since it wasn't showing up on the SCSI bus at all, chances were it wasn't the platters on the disk itself, but something electronic. Dale suggested pulling the controller board off of an identical model disk, if I had one -- which I did -- and see if it worked. Boy howdy, it did. After some poking around, I was able to pull the configuration data and binaries and all kinds of goodies off the disk and onto the new system disk, and after awhile, ftp1.umbc.edu was back in operation.

What a waste of time.
