Upgrading Sun V20z SP software and BIOS

Updating the BIOS and Service Processor (SP) software on a Sun V20z is a procedure that so far has been poorly documented by Sun. I'll cover how to update the BIOS and the the SP software.

Read on...

Both processes require you to check with Sun's V20z downloads page to retrieve the "NSV" (the oddly-named Network Share Volume) software. These downloads contain 3 components - the BIOS image, the SP software images, and the 32 and 64bit drivers and daemons which allow Solaris to talk to the SP directly.

Update software setup procedure

  1. Take the NSV downloads and unzip them on jumpcore.umbc.edu in the /mgmtnet/v20z-sp directory.
  2. Be sure that /mgmtnet is shared out via NFS by executing showmount -e

Upgrading the BIOS

  1. Log in to the SP of the system(s) you are updating with the new BIOS.
  2. Halt Solaris (or Linux if the case may be) on these systems, too.
  3. On the SP, mount the NFS share with the NSV software images on jumpcore: sp add mount -r 130.85.24.68:/mgmtnet/v20z-sp -l /mnt
  4. Now issue the command to tell the SP to flash the new BIOS: platform set os state update-bios /mnt/sw_images/platform/firmware/bios/V1.32.7.2/bios.sp. Here we are updating the BIOS to version 1.32.7.2. This will take a few minutes and you'll see some output indicating progress.
  5. Once the flashing is done, the system (not the SP) will reboot to make it active. This will bring the entire system back up to a running state. You can watch this happen by connecting to the V20z's serial console.

Upgrading the SP software

  1. Ensure the the main OS is halted (Solaris or Linux)

  2. On jumpcore.umbc.edu, from the /mgmtnet/v20z-sp directory, execute the following command to start the SP update server: java -jar update_server//updateServer.jar -f sw_images/sp/spbase//install.image -p 50000

  3. Log on to the SPs you wish to update and execute platform set power state off -f to power-off the system.

  4. Then execute sp update flash all -i 130.85.24.68 -p 50000 to initiate the SP software upgrade. The SP will update and then reboot itself, dropping your connection to it. After a while, you will be able to log in and see that the new version of SP software is active.

Thank you! Perfect, I was pulling my hair out. The Sun docs are NOT worth a darn. For example, they mention nothing about having to get the NSV server and extract it (in addition to the BIOS).

Thanks for the tips.
