tapestud upgraded

Tapestud has been upgraded to Solaris 10. The old system disk is still in it as c0t0, will set up mirroring to a new disk in a couple days after everything has worked fine.

The return of system statistics

Cacti is now back in operation on a beefier box (Sun X4100).

www1 and www3 serve www.umbc.edu
www4 serves userpages.umbc.edu
uportal1 & 2 serve myUMBC
grimm is the MySQL db server

Not all hosts we have are listed there, namely Linux servers because of problems with Net-SNMP on that platform.

ldap server upgrades

Our two LDAP server replicas (ig88 & dengar), both Sun E250's have been replaced with two Sun E280R systems (ldap-rep1 & ldap-rep2).

The data for ldap-master is now housed on our SAN, mirrored between the ECS and Public Policy datacenters.

Blackboard crash

Our Blackboard server slowed to a halt at ~11:30AM today, 3/8. The main tomcat JAVA paocess was hung using too much memory. I was able to get the hung tomcat process to restart but the main page would not load till I restarted IIS.

solaris.gl downtime this weekend

This Saturday, 3/11, solaris.gl.umbc.edu will be down for a short time beginning at 1:30pm for an upgrade of its OS to Solaris 10.

Downtime is expected to be no longer than two hours. An update will be sent out once it is completed.

The other servers in the GL cluster will still be operational and available for use.

calendar.umbc.edu upgraded

The calendar.umbc.edu service was moved last night around 8:30pm from a Sun Netra X1 to a Sun E280R.

4x the memory, twice the CPUs (now with "speed!"), and it's databases have been moved to our bi-located mirrored storage.

grimm.umbc.edu's RAM upgraded

Yesterday we upgraded grimm.umbc.edu (a Sun V210) from 2GB to 4GB of RAM. This is in preparation for moving the Oracle "GL" instance from the old threepio.umbc.edu server (a Sun E250) to this new server. grimm already runs the MySQL database Syscore maintains for user and departmental use.

Shibboleth

UMBC now has a Shibboleth IDP, currently part of the "InQueue" federation.

It is currently in the testing stages (could go down without notice) -- there's still some configuration and stuff to be done.

To experience it, visit "http://wayf.internet2.edu/InQueue/sample.jsp"
and choose Univeristy of MD, Baltimore County from the "where are you from" list. You'll log in with the familiar MyUMBC login screen -- and your assertion as a member of the UMBC community will be accepted by the remote application.

Doesn't sound too impressive when it just works; see http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/ for more information.

variety of mail tweaks

  • Fixed a problem with the milter, where perl wasn't freeing up memory causing it to get bigger and bigger.

  • Upgraded to SpamAssassin 3.1.1

  • Tweaked some of the spam assassin configs to give it a lower timeout, and allow more spamd processes to fork

  • Configured the the bogusmx blacklist

consoles for v20z servers (and 4100s!)

console.umbc.edu now has console entries for the mgmt interface, and serial console interfaces on all of the Sun V20z servers we currently have in production. To access the managment interface, do a 'sudo console SERVER.cmgmt'.

Please, when putting any new server on line, please make sure you can get the console by typing "console SERVERNAME" on the console server; this single-point of interface makes managing our servers much easier, and much less of a headache than trying ot figure out which random managment interface you need to connect to, and what magic incantations you need to type to get access to the console output. It also make sure our console output is logged in one place, so that when a server crashes it's easy to troubleshoot why.

[UPDATE]
Also have the consoles working for the X4100s as well. Currently they're running over the serial line, however, they can be converted to use the ssh-based managment port at some point, it's just a matter of figuring out how to add the ssh keys in the totally weird CLI they've created.

Blackboard custom auth mod

I updated Blackboard's custom auth module to move the
custom auth log file to a subdirectory. This is nessesary to keep the log rotator process from crashing.

After replacing the jar files, I restarted the blackboard services. The server still needs a complete restart as the log file is now being written to both the new location and the old.

PUPcr stuff

* hfs11 has been moved to the Public Policy CR
(figured, we didn't have anything over there that could actually
serve the files that were over there if we needed it to)

* One of the spare v100's has been relocated to the PUPCR, and will
serve as corens3 (doing caching DNS, ntp, and NIS)

* Webmail2.umbc.edu has been rebadged as sympa.umbc.edu, so it can be
recommissioned to do...well, that.

* Uportal2's managment network line has been fixed, so it can be
managed yet again.
