UMBC Theatre and Visual Arts: Diving into the Dark

The “Crystal Egg” is a story about a lonely man who discovers creatures from another dimension inside an antique egg.

Theatrical stories are often told through a series of dialogue between actors. But what if they were told only through sound and physical action? This idea is captured in the “Crystal Egg” production, set to run December 2-5, 10-13, in the UMBC Theatre. However, the movements are not made by actors – but handcrafted and manually operated puppets. And the sounds are not only made by instruments - but everyday objects such as wine glasses or children’s toys.

The production is a collaborative effort between theatre students and Imaging Research Center (IRC) Fellows, spurred from a discussion between Colette Searls, director of the “Crystal Egg” and associate professor of theatre, and Tim Nohe, associate professor of visual arts.

Visual Culture and Evolution Online Symposium

The Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences will co-host the Visual Culture and Evolution Online Symposium with UMBC's Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture (UMBC) and Johns Hopkins University's Master of Arts in Museum Studies Program.

Visit the symposium: http://www.vcande.org
Follow the discussion: http://vcande.blogspot.com

Join a group of more than 30 international experts—including artists, scientists, historians, ethicists, curators, sociologists, and writers—as they discuss the intersections between the visual arts and evolution. This past year, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, On the Origin of Species, a number of conferences were held around the world focusing on the impact of the concept of evolution. This symposium will be a platform to discuss both the ideas generated from those activities and the present impact of evolutionary thought on visual culture.

UMBC organizes international contemporary music festival.

Contemporary musicians from around the globe come to UMBC October 27-30 for Livewire, a festival of 21st century music. “This is a celebration of the vast creative force that has emerged in the last decade,” said Linda Dusman, professor of music and Livewire organizer.

The festival program is a representation of the depth and variety of that creative force. Featured performers include the Ruckus ensemble, the Damocles Trio, the Hoffmann/Goldstein Duo, the Synchronous Trio and UMBC faculty Matthew Belzer, Lisa Cella, Tom Goldstein, Gita Ladd, Maria Lambros, E. Michael Richards and Airi Yoshioka.

Livewire begins with a student concert, Wednesday, October 27, at noon in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. “UMBC students are very involved in contemporary music-making,” said Dusman.

Passage on the Underground Railroad Exhibition

The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Passage on the Underground Railroad, artwork by Stephen Marc, organized by the University at Buffalo Art Galleries, Buffalo, New York, and curated by Sandra H. Olsen. The exhibition will be on display through March 22.

Stephen Marc's fascinating photographs and digital montages explore the history of freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. With this body of work, Marc combines contemporary images with historic documents and artifacts to create richly-layered objects that bring the past palpably into the present. For seven years the artist photographed the routes traveled by fugitive slaves in their search for freedom, documenting and interpreting his research along the way. In Passage on the Underground Railroad, Marc shares the results of these explorations through eighty-seven thought- provoking, unconventional, and haunting digital images.

The Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 12 noon to 4 pm, on Thursday until 8 pm, and Saturday and Sunday 1 - 5 pm. Admission is free. For more information call 410-455-2270.

On Wednesday, March 7 at 4 pm, Stephen Marc will present a lecture on his work. Please see the Humanities Forum listing on this calendar for additional information.
