Men's Lacrosse is Narrow Preseason Choice to Defend America East Crown

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team, winners of two of the last three America East men’s lacrosse titles, is the preseason choice of the coaches to again claim the crown in 2009. The Retrievers received a total of 24 points and four first-place votes (coaches were not permitted to vote for their team), just ahead of University at Albany, the 2007 champion, which received 22 points and a pair of first-place votes.

Stony Brook University was chosen third with 16 points, while Binghamton University was tabbed fourth with 14. University of Vermont and University of Hartford rounded out the six-team poll with nine and five points, respectively.

The top four teams in the conference will qualify for the America East Championship with the winner of the tournament receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship.

The Retrievers are ranked No. 11 in the United States Lacrosse Coaches Association preseason poll and tabbed at No. 10 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason poll.

Make It a Dozen! UMBC Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Sixth Consecutive America East Championship, 12th Overall, Women Take Second

The UMBC men's swimming and diving team has won the America East Championship for the sixth consecutive season and 12th overall conference title. The Retrievers finished with 900 points, beating Boston University 27 points, who finished 873. The women finished in second with 687 points.

Record-Tying Four Retrievers Earn All America Honors In Men's Lacrosse

For the second consecutive year, a school-record tying four UMBC men’s lacrosse players have been selected to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s All-America squads.

Senior midfielder Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa.) earned the top honor, earning Second Team honors, while senior goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) repeated as an honorable mention selection. Senior midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and junior linemate Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa.) both earned honorable mention citations.

UMBC Baseball's Michael Pesci Named "All-Star Among Us," Wins Trip to MLB All-Star Game

Rising sophomore Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and his sister, Christina, have been named among the 30 winners of the “All-Stars Among Us” campaign, which spotlights people who have gone above and beyond to serve their communities, Major League Baseball and People announced last week.

Nearly three-quarters of a million votes were cast by fans across the nation to select the 30 "All-Stars Among Us" winners -- one per Major League team -- out of the pool of 90 finalists who are serving as leaders within their communities. The Pescis were selected to represent the New York Yankees.

Michael is the founder of Perfect Pitch HRD Inc., a nonprofit organization which has raised $175,000 for mentally and physically handicapped children and young adults. Many former Major Leaguers have worked with the organization, including Don Larsen, who threw a perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Christina is president of Bridging the Generation Gap, an outreach organization which promotes friendship between young people and senior citizens.

Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Fourth Straight Patriot Invitational, Women Reclaim Title


The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams captured the 2009 George Mason Patriot Invitational crowns Sunday in Fairfax, Va. The men, who claimed their fourth straight title finished with 922.5 points, while women, who scored 1,006 points, won their second title in three years. Competing universities included Georgetown, George Washington, UNC-Wilmington, George Mason, and American. See results.

Pretty in Pink: Women’s Basketball Completes Season Sweep of Albany with 51-40 Victory in Pink Zone Game


The Retrievers wore special pink uniforms for Thursday's Pink Zone game against the Great Danes.

Sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the UMBC women’s basketball team to a 51-40 victory over America East rival Albany Thursday evening at the RAC Arena. The Retrievers have won three of their last four games.

The Retrievers wore special pink uniforms as part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative to promote breast cancer awareness, and proceeds from the game will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

Kurowski’s 21 points came on 8-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-3 from long distance, and she was named UMBC’s America East Player of the Game.

Retrievers Shutout Georgetown, 2-0, Behind Fefel’s One-Hitter

UMBC senior Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) allowed just one hit and struck out a season-high seven batters as the UMBC softball team (17-14) blanked Georgetown (14-18) by a score of 2-0 Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.

Fefel went the distance and improved to 3-2 on the season with the first shutout by a Retriever pitcher since junior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) blanked Liberty, 5-0, on Feb. 20. It was Fefel’s sixth career shutout and her first since April 2, 2009, against Morgan State.


Amanda Fefel tossed her sixth career shutout with a one-hitter against Georgetown.

Parkinson Named America East Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week

Senior Sara Parkinson (Lancashire, England) has been named the season's first America East Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday. Parkinson won the Mount St. Mary’s Dual 5K's, posting a time of 17:47.47. The time was more than 18 seconds faster than the next fastest competitor and 37 seconds ahead of last year’s time at the meet. Parkinson finished sixth at the 2009 America East championship meet.

UMBC Alums Help Team USA Win World Lacrosse Championship


Drew Westervelt '07 and Brendan Mundorf '06 recently played on Team USA, winners of the World Lacrosse tournament.

A UMBC lacrosse alumnus has been named to the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) All-World team. Brendan Mundorf '06, sociology, scored two goals against Canada in the FIL championship game, and scored a total of 17 goals in the six-game tournament. Team USA earned the World Lacrosse title.

Mundorf had the fourth most productive freshman season in the history of UMBC's Division I lacrosse history. He also received All City-County honors from the Baltimore Sun during his senior season.

Drew Westervelt '07, interdisciplinary studies, who is also a former member of the UMBC lacrosse team, scored 12 goals in six games with Team USA. Westervelt is a Baltimore Sun All Metro selection, and was co-player of the year in Harford County in 2003.

“It's absolutely fantastic,” said Don Zimmerman, head coach of the men's lacrosse program. “It is one thing to have one player to represent UMBC on a national team, but have two is extraordinary. I couldn't ask for two better alums to represent us. When they were here they were leaders. They had great attitudes and worked hard.”

Mundorf and Westervelt, who currently play for the Denver Outlaws, will compete for a Major Lacrosse League title this month.

UMBC Soccer Star Levi Houapeu is Candidate for Soccer News Net Men's College Player of the Year

UMBC senior forward Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) is among one of 37 players across the country nominated for the 2010 Soccer News Net Men’s College Player of the Year.

Houapeu once again had another outstanding season, leading the Retrievers to their most successful season in program history. UMBC won its first America East Championship and advanced to the NCAA Second Round with a 2-1 upset at Princeton. The forward led the conference in goals (15), goals per game (0.75), points (34) and points per game (1.70). He won a major award from the conference for the second year in a row, being named Striker of the Year after taking home Midfielder of the Year honors in 2009.

At the end of the Retriever's season, Houapeu ranked sixth in country in goals, seventh in goals per game and total points and 10th in points per game.

Online fan voting accounts for 40% of the vote in determining the Soccer News Net Player of the Year. Voting closes Dec. 23 with the winner being announced in January.

Women’s Basketball Claims First-Ever America East Regular-Season Title

The UMBC women’s basketball team (19-10, 13-3 AE) defeated Albany (15-13, 8-7 AE) by a score of 62-55 Wednesday evening at the RAC Arena to claim its first-ever America East regular-season title. The win is the sixth straight for the Retrievers, who will be the top seed in next weekend’s America East Championship in West Hartford, Conn., and will face the winner of the first-round game between Stony Brook and Maine on Friday, March 4.

UMBC will host the conference title game on Saturday, March 12, should they reach that contest. In addition, Wednesday’s victory guarantees UMBC a postseason appearance in either the NCAA Tournament or Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Notes: UMBC’s 19 wins are a school Division I record and one shy of the overall mark of 20, set in the 1985-86 season… The Retrievers have won six straight for the first time since Jan. 26-Feb. 12, 2006… UMBC is 12-1 at the RAC this season, a school record for home victories in a season… The Retrievers have won 11 in a row at the RAC, matching the school record set Jan. 28, 1986-Jan. 22, 1987… After starting the season 1-5, UMBC has won 18 of its last 23 contests… The Retrievers are nine games over .500 for the first time since Feb. 28, 1986, when they were 20-9.

Adewumi, Kennedy Named 2011 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholars

UMBC men’s tennis junior Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) and volleyball junior Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) have been named 2011 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. The publication sponsors the awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as in athletic play.

Adewumi won 20 matches for his third consecutive year, going 12-7 in singles action and 8-10 in doubles’ play in 2011. He was named America East Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 6 and was a member of the 2010 America East Honor Roll. Adewumi has a cumulative GPA of 3.59 in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Kennedy led the Retrievers and ranked third in the America East in total blocks with 1.05 blocks per set, while ranking second on the team with a .191 hitting percentage and third in kills with 1.89 kills per set. The junior’s 97 assisted blocks this season was the third-most in school history, while her 108 total blocks rank sixth in UMBC history. Kennedy, who was named to the 2010 America East All-Academic squad, has a 3.90 cumulative GPA and is majoring in psychology with minors in Spanish and biology.

Both of Adewumi and Kennedy’s teams advanced to the America East Championship during the 2010-11 school year.
