Advising Meetings Archives
Biology & Biochemistry majors

Did you know there's a website dedicated to the advisement of Biology, Biochemistry, and other declared majors within the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS)? The CNMS Academic Advising website is the central source of information for current and prospective undergraduate students who are pursuing majors and minors within CNMS. The physical location of the CNMS Advising office is Room 140 of the Meyerhoff Chemistry building.

Your Declared Major or Assigned Academic Advisor provides you with guidance on how to properly fulfill UMBC graduation and general education (GFR) requirements; lifts your registration block every semester after you receive proper advisement; and is the point person for issues and paperwork which might require an advisor's signature.

Find out who your Assigned Advisor is by visiting this link. Biology or Biochemistry majors with 30 or fewer earned credits should contact cnmsadvising@umbc.edu.

For a more in-depth understanding of primary and supplemental advising, please visit this webpage.

Sophomore Mandatory PreHealth Advising meeting

MANDATORY attendance is required at this group advising meeting for any current UMBC sophomore or sophomore-transfer student who is interested in attending medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary school after graduating from UMBC.

From a pre-health advising perspective, you should attend the Sophomore Workshop if:
This is your third or fourth semester in college.
or
You are currently enrolled in CHEM 351 or CHEM 352 or BIOL 302 or BIOL 303.

This meeting will address pre-professional specific advising issues for sophomores such as professional school prerequisite courses, grades, standardized exams, gaining research, clinical, and leadership experience. Between now and the meeting, sophomores should acquire a working knowledge of the information on the office's website. All sophomore students interested in attending medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary school after they graduate from UMBC, are required to attend.

Pre-professional students have TWO advisors--an Assigned Academic/Major Advisor and a supplemental, pre-health advisor. Please read about the differences between your TWO advisors here. It is strongly suggested that each student meet with their Assigned Academic/Major Advisor prior to attending the pre-health group advising session. Only your Assigned Academic Advisor in your declared major can lift your registration block.

This session will be conducted two times. The same content will be covered in both sessions. There is no need to RSVP. Please save one of these dates on your calendar.
