Green Space

Green Space

GreenSpace @ UMBC is group of students that has identified a common interest in creating a new and exciting addition to the UMBC campus. We plan to create a public outdoor space located near the Gallery Entrance of the Fine Arts Building that will become a comfortable, aesthetically appealing place to gather, rest and study for the entire UMBC community.

Will there be an effort to stop people from smoking in that area if this plan does get chosen? I like the idea, but I know that there are generally people smoking right outside the fine arts building, and I imagine that would make spending time in the green space less enjoyable.

Katie:

It's strikes me as a cute idea, but I’m not sure that this is the best way to use the money. This space would only be worthwhile to me in nice weather (which is rare during the times I need to relax or study). The location doesn't interest me, I don't think people will use it as much as some of the other ideas. I know I wouldn't.

Vs. pond= this is a better idea, but then it would still be a pretty green space next to a stinky pond. Green space beats pond.

Vs. ropes = I don’t care about a ropes course at all. I don’t see how a ropes course would improve my life in any way, I would never use it. I do think other students might benefit from it. It is windy and cold most of the school year, so it both of these projects would only be usable now and then. I guess these two are close to a toss up, with extra points going to the ropes course for being something we don’t already have, having the potential to improve more student’s lives, and being an attraction to new students. Ropes beat green space.

Vs. study space= Study space could be used more, would be a safer place to be late at night. I currently use the study space every week, and I would love to have it open 24/7 with or without the renovations. We already have a lot of green space. So the study place wins. Study space beats green space.

Vs. creative center= The green space is near the art building...but the creative center IS an art building AND a study space with 24/7 access. There is already a lot of open out door space. There are already trees, benches, sculpture gardens, green space, woods, trails...... What I need that UMBC is missing is a place to work on projects and study late at night. So creative center beats green space.

Jamie:

I love this idea, finally a place to study and relax outside the fine arts building. I just started a Grad program last semester at UMBC and the majority of my time is spent in the buildings around this area. Sad to say this pathetic little lot of land is a poor representation of UMBC grounds. If this is selected for the Prove campaign I believe it will benefit more than just one group of students; it will improve the campus experience for students of multiple modalities.
