New book on Baltimore's suburbs by Thomas J. Vicino

Thomas J. Vicino (Ph.D., 2006) has published a book, The Transformation of Class and Race in Metropolitan Baltimore: Suburban Crossroads (Palgrave Macmillan). The analysis of the deterioration of older “first tier” suburbs around Baltimore is based on his dissertation work at UMBC. View the website for the book. Currently at the University of Texas at Arlington, Tom will move to a tenure-track position at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts in the fall.

A History of Social Security by Larry DeWitt

Ph.D. student Larry DeWitt is the co-author of Social Security: A Documentary History (CQ Press). The book chronicles the development of Social Security from its founding to the present day. Larry is the public historian at the Social Security Administration. Go here for more information on this book.

Student and faculty contribute to Maryland budget report

The latest edition of Maryland Policy Reports contains an article on "Maryland's Unique Budget Process" by Ph.D. student Neil Bergsman, and an article on "Increasing Budgetary Democracy and Flexibility" by UMBC Political Science Professor and Public Policy faculty member Roy T. Meyers. Neil is Director of the Maryland Budget & Tax Policy Institute. The report is available on the Institute's web site.

Alumnus named first black battallion chief in Baltimore County Fire Department

Jonathan Hart (MPS, 2002) has been named a battalion chief by the Baltimore County Fire Department. He is the department's first black battalion chief. Hart also received his B.A. in Political Science from UMBC. At the May 29 promotion ceremony, he received the first Robert O. Lowery Award from the Guardian Knights, the Baltimore County chapter of the International Association of Black Firefighters. The award recognizes those who have advanced the role of minorities in the county fire department.
