JUNIORS AND SENIORS MAJORING IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, BIOLOGY,

Two highly competitive positions are being offered to students majoring in Science and Math at UMBC for the spring 2007 semester. Please do not delay in applying, as the deadline January 31, 2007 is soon approaching.

POSITION #1: VIP K-16 Classroom Fellow

Earn a $1,000 Stipend, plus $100 for travel, by participating as a Fellow through the Vertically Integrated Partnership K-16 (VIP K-16)
Project. VIP K-16-- funded through the National Science Foundation--is a partnership between the University System of Maryland and Montgomery County Public High Schools.

UMBC Undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math are welcome to participate in the upcoming Spring 2007 Fellowship.

The time commitment consists of seven to eight hours a week in a
Montgomery County Public High School classroom. The fellowship will last the entire Fall semester. Students accepted will receive a notation on their transcript.

High school teachers are currently looking for Chemistry Undergraduates to work with Advanced Placement Chemistry high school students, math tutors, students with a special interest in horticulture and/or landscaping, students that know GIS, students with a special interest in geology and astronomy, and students with an interest in English/literature to help tutor or edit student's rough drafts.

POSITION #2: VIP K-16 Tutor

Earn a $500 stipend for participating as a VIP K-16 Tutor for the spring 2007 semester. The time commitment consists of 3-4 hours per week for an entire semester. Typical assignments include tutoring high school students after school or on the weekend in Math and Science subjects at Northwood High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. VIP K-16 Classroom Fellow

Program Description:
The Vertically Integrated Partnership K-16 (VIP K-16)—funded through the National Science Foundation—is a partnership between the University System of Maryland, including UMBC, and Montgomery County Public High Schools. Undergraduate and/or Graduate Students will be placed into Montgomery County public high schools to help promote inquiry-based learning.

Qualifications:
• Full time student enrolled in an Undergraduate Program in Science, Math, Engineering or Technology
• Minimum GPA of 2.5
• Original Transcript from the UMBC Registrar’s Office
• Rising Junior or Senior
• Graduate Student
• Spanish speaking (not necessary but would be helpful)
• Must have own transportation ($100 stipend provided for transportation costs)
• Placement will occur in Spring 2007

Description:
• The position is a part-time, service learning internship. The candidate will be assigned to one of our partner schools and to a Master Science Teacher (MST) or Resource Teacher (RT) within that school.

• Selected Fellows will also successfully complete all requirements of The Shriver Center’s Service-Learning Practicum 096F for VIP K-16 which includes, but is not limited to, reflections, completing timesheets, evaluations, and submitting a journal.

• The Fellow will report directly each week to their assigned teacher in the Montgomery County Public School System.

• Time commitment is 7-8 hours, once a week, in a Montgomery County Public High School for a full semester. Potential placement sites include the following: Northwood High School, Sherwood High School, and Wheaton High School.

• Typical assignments would be to assist the Master Science Teacher (MST) or Resource Teacher (RT) during lab activities, co-teaching in the classroom, or working to support Science Inquiry Day by assisting high school students with the scientific method.

• MCPS Teachers are specifically looking for Chemistry undergraduate students to work with Advanced Placement chemistry high school students, math tutors, students with a special interest in horticulture and/or landscaping, students with a special interest in geology and astronomy, and students with an interest in English/literature to help tutor or edit student’s rough drafts.

• Northwood High School has specifically requested a student who can speak Spanish to support their growing Latino population in science related activities.

Compensation: $1,000 stipend for 1-semester working commitment.

VIP K-16 Tutor

Program Description:

• Copy of or Original Transcript from the UMBC Registrar’s Office
• Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
• Spanish-speaking (not necessary but would be helpful)
• Transportation will be provided
• Placement will occur in Spring 2007
• Graduate Students are welcome to apply!

Description:
• The position is a part-time, service-learning internship. The candidate will be assigned to Northwood High School and to a Master Science Teacher (MST) or Resource Teacher (RT) within that school.

• Time commitment is 3-4 hours per week for a full semester. Tutors will go to Northwood after school (school ends at 2:10 pm, so tutoring could be arranged any time from 2 pm-7 pm, which includes travel time) on Tuesday or Thursdays. Exact times will be determined by the availability of the majority of participants. Saturday mornings are also a possible time for tutoring.

• Typical assignments would be to tutor Math and Science students in small groups as well as one-on-one.


Compensation: $500.00 stipend for a one-semester working commitment.
