Service Learning Opportunities

Consider these great opportunities when registering for Fall 2007 classes! Two information sessions scheduled on Monday, April 16th, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Tuesday, April 17th, 2 - 3:30 p.m. regarding several unique positions in a variety of school-based locations throughout the Baltimore Region (elementary, middle, and high school levels).
Upcoming Juniors and Seniors, with the majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are strongly encouraged to participate (although help is needed in English-related areas as well!)!

K-16 Fellowships Summary

K-16 Tutor/Coach

Program Description:
Undergraduate and/or Graduate Students will be placed in a variety of locations in Baltimore City and surrounding counties in Elementary, Middle, and High Schools to help promote inquiry-based learning and tutor/coach students in a range of subject areas such as Reading, Math, and Sciences. The goal of this fellowship will be to enhance K-12 students’ knowledge, as well as performance on the Maryland School Assessment, the standardized test used in Maryland to gauge student achievement. Opportunities are available during and after school hours.

Compensation: $500.00 stipend for a one-semester working commitment.

Research Fellows Program

Program Description:
K-16 Research Fellows will visit their placement school to present research done at UMBC. Typical presentations have included the beginning stages of research (i.e. developing a question and hypothesis), the findings and conclusion of the research, and overall strategies and techniques on how to perform research. Our hope is that your research and the process you take to complete it will inspire K-12 students to engage in their own research.

Incentives: $500.00 stipend for one academic year working commitment; Transcript notation; Certificate of Program Completion; Professional Development opportunities through training and participation in presentations.

K-16 Classroom Fellow

Program Description:
Undergraduate and/or Graduate Students will be placed into Elementary, Middle and High Schools in Baltimore City and surrounding areas to help promote inquiry-based learning in STEM-related fields and gain exposure to K-12 classrooms. Our goal for K-16 Classroom Fellows is to use their best practices from their own experience in K-12 education to help create innovative classroom strategies for teaching students.

Compensation: $1,000 stipend for 1-semester working commitment

The first information session will be held in Public Policy 107 on Monday, April 16, 2007 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The second information session will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 from 2pm-3:30pm again in Public Policy 107.
