Help High School Students Get Into College

The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program in Baltimore County could use YOUR help as College Preparatory Tutors at Woodlawn High School (less than 15 minutes from UMBC). AVID Staff will provide training on various methods used to sharpen students' study and organizational skills to successfully lead them to college.

AVID sessions occur throughout the school day at Woodlawn H.S. Tutors will be paid a stipend of up to $8/hour. Zero-credit prac notation through The Shriver Center is available for 3-5 hours per week of service, which involves completing a journal on your experience and participating in reflections. If you are interested in linking your K-16 service placement with credit, you can sign up for the EDUC 387 course.

For more information on the national AVID Program, go to www.avidonline.org. If you are interested in participating, please contact Lori Hardesty, Program Coordinator of K-16 Service-Learning Projects at lhardesty@umbc.edu or at (410) 455-2493.
