STEM Majors needed for NASA Fellowship in Baltimore

Science majors needed for a NASA-funded Fellowship to assist teachers and their middle school students with science content, preparing lessons, assisting with labs, etc. Placement is in a K-8 Baltimore City public school, 15 minutes from UMBC campus. Intensive Fellowship involves 7-8 hours per week working directly in classrooms. Position begins immediately and goes until May 2008, with an opportunity for a summer internship at NASA's Goddard Space Center in Greenbelt, MD.

THE STEM CLASSROOM FELLOWS PROGRAM
The STEM Classroom Fellows Program, sponsored by The Shriver Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), in partnership with Federal Hill Preparatory School, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), seeks to infuse STEM-related (i.e., science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) content knowledge into the K-8 curriculum. Undergraduate students will be placed at Federal Hill Preparatory School to help promote students’ learning in these areas.

QUALIFICATIONS
A qualified student will be:
• a full-time student enrolled in an undergraduate program in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics;
• a sophomore, junior, or senior class rank;
• available for both Fall 2007 and Spring 2008;
• comfortable to work with 6th-8th grade students.

DESCRIPTION
• This position is a part-time service-learning fellowship. Students will be assigned to one classroom or classroom level at Federal Hill Preparatory School.

• During the academic year, Fellows will also successfully complete all requirements of The Shriver Center’s service-learning practicum 096F, which includes opportunities for reflection and journaling, and warrants a zero-credit transcript notation.

• The Fellow will report directly each week to their assigned teacher(s) at Federal Hill Preparatory school and will maintain the proper records for tracking service hours.

• Time commitment is 7-8 hours each week for the 2007-08 academic year. Hours will be verified by their mentoring teacher on a time sheet kept by the student throughout the experience. Preferred times are Tuesdays and/or Thursdays in the morning and/or afternoon, but there is some flexibility regarding schedule.

• Typical assignments may include: assisting the mentoring teacher during lab activities, co-teaching in the classroom, developing a lesson to teach in the classroom, tutoring math/ science students during or after school, or assisting in curriculum development. Overall, Fellows should be actively engaged throughout their experience.

• Typical assignments should not include: putting grades into grade books, setting up before a lab activity and/or cleaning up after a lab activity, or sitting idol in the classroom not actively engaged.

COMPENSATION
Fellows will receive a $1,250 stipend over the course of the year, $625 at the end of the Fall ’07 semester, $625 at the end of the Spring’08 semester. Additionally, upon completion of their experience, Fellows will be eligible to apply for a summer internship at NASA/Goddard related to their field study.
