Participate in this unique opportunity this Spring 2008 to learn and serve! ENGL 386 Adult Literacy Tutoring: Issues and Methods spends half of the class time at The Learning Bank, Maryland's largest privately run adult literacy program working one-on-one or w/ small groups of adults who are trying to make positive changes in their lives.

This course explores principles and techniques pertaining to adult literacy tutoring. It introduces students to basic tutoring methods; provides background in the cultural, political, and social causes of illiteracy; and it serves as a forum to the discussion of issues surrounding civic literacy and social responsibility. Students will apply the concepts and skills they develop to actual tutoring experiences. The field-work component of this course requires that students spend four hours per week serving as tutors to functionally illiterate adults. Note: Also listed as EDUC 386. Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of C or better and permission of the Shriver Center.

Space is limited so act fast!!! Through this class, you will be enrolled in the 096 zero-credit practicum, which will appear on your transcript. For more information, contact Lori Hardesty at (410) 455-2493 or at lhardesty@umbc.edu.
