Help A New Local School Get Started - Volunteers Needed!

KAPPA (Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy) is a new charter school on the grounds of West Baltimore Middle School, 10 minutes from UMBC off of Frederick Road. This school is a part of the "Transformative Schools" efforts that Baltimore City Public School's CEO Dr. Alonso is seeking to create combined middle and high schools. KAPPA will begin the 2008-09 school year with 6th and 9th graders, adding a grade every year until they become 6th-12th grade. They will have a particular focus on Music and the Arts.

Mr. William Moeller, KAPPA's 9th grade Social Studies teacher, is spearheading efforts to help get KAPPA ready for the upcoming year. Your help is needed:

- with the Summer Bridge for incoming 9th graders, which may include a visit to or from UMBC. At this time, sessions take place 9am-3pm M-F, 8/4-8/15.

If you are interested in helping out between now and mid-August, even for just one morning or afternoon, contact Mr. Moeller at wmoeller@bcps.k12.md.us

This fall there will also be mentoring and tutoring opportunities with KAPPA offered through The Shriver Center. These will be available in late September/early October during the school day and every other Saturday.
