The Maryland Office for New Americans (MONA) provides support services to refugees to ease their transition into American society and serves as a resource to the Governor and General Assembly on refugee and immigrant policy. Currently, they are looking for an Intern to assist in ongoing projects at MONA. The work of MONA is broad in nature covering public policy, refugee advocacy, demographics and database work, as well contract management. Intern projects have included:
-Asylee outreach and information campaign
-Collection and analysis of immigration data
-Spatial analysis of Maryland’s refugee settlement patterns
-Green Card Workshop logistics
-Writing/editing for newsletters
-Analysis of refugee resettlement trends
This is an unpaid position offering practical experience in the workings of a government agency serving the foreign-born.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS OR DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Positions are intended for self-motivated Juniors, Seniors or Graduate students. Relevant majors may include: International Relations, Geography, Political Science, Statistics & Foreign Language. However, motivation and cross-cultural interests are more important than major. Candidates should have solid computer skills (e.g., Microsoft software packages, etc.), strong writing skills and organizational abilities. Foreign language ability is desirable, but not required. Candidates who can learn quickly “on the job” are encouraged to apply.
DATES: Fall 2008 (September interviews)
HOURS: Flexible subject to credit/non-credit consideration
PAY: Reimbursement for parking, mileage and lunch ($10, if four hours are worked that day)
