Paid Summer Science, Math and Engineering Research at Rutgers

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, invites applications to our highly successful summer research program, RISE (Research In Science and Engineering) at Rutgers/UMDNJ, http://rise.rutgers.edu. Applications are sought from students who currently:
- are juniors, sophomores, or first-semester seniors (graduating Dec. 09 or thereafter)
- have strong academic credentials
- are considering future PhD programs.

Particularly applications are encouraged from traditionally underrepresented minorities and from students who are from disadvantaged or first-generation college families, have followed non-traditional trajectories through college, or attend undergraduate institutions that do not offer research opportunities.

Here are some features that distinguish RISE from many other summer programs:

-- Exciting Science: Our research spans the biomedical, physical and behavioral sciences, math, and engineering. In the biosciences, we offer an umbrella program, http://lifesci.rutgers.edu/~molbiosci/, and are home to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey. Cutting-edge interdisciplinary opportunities include three IGERT programs: Biointerfaces (www.igert.rutgers.edu), NanoPharmaceutical Science & Engineering, http://igertnanopharma.rutgers.edu/, and Perceptual Sciences, http://perceptualscience.rutgers.edu/. We also offer strong programs in environmental and marine sciences, food and nutritional sciences, and ecology.

-- Choice of Mentor: We welcome each student’s input

-- Option for 8 or 10 week experience.

-- Extensive professional enrichment: Training in oral and written presentation skills, GRE preparation, workshops on graduate school admissions (including preparation of a personal statement), networking with guest speakers from industry and academia.

-- Funding: Competitive stipend, free on-campus housing, and travel reimbursement.

-- Record of alumni success: RISE students have won numerous awards at national research conferences and have an excellent record of graduate school placement.

-- Great location: We are only a short train ride from the excitement of New York City and Philadelphia, yet have a safe and green campus with easy access to the mountains and beach. We are at the national center of the pharmaceutical and technology industries, and summer students are often able to arrange future internships.

-- On-line application at http://rise.rutgers.edu. Rolling admission begins at the end of January and is highly competitive. We advise early application.

For more information on this opportunity or other summer research experiences, contact Kerry Kidwell-Slak in the Shriver Center at kerryk@umbc.edu or call 410-455-2493 to schedule an appointment.

Seeking Creative Individual for Project Management, Research and Design!

Christos J. Palios, Baltimore-based panorama artist, will shoot a photographic period piece as a scene from daily life in the 1930s through the 1940s. While working closely with a local museum, along with 15-20 models and actors, he plans to bring this project to fruition this upcoming May or June. He is seeking one enthusiastic, diligent candidate to assist on a number of levels, from initial preparations and research through to the final shoot date. At this time, this is an unpaid opportunity with potential reward and compensation upon project completion.

Emphasis is on history and fashion/apparel. Candidate should expect approximately 3-5 hours each week for phone and in-person meetings/brainstorming sessions, research, and eventual interviews and vintage apparel shopping with models and actors.

Christos intends this to be fun, collaborative, and artistically-stimulating. Final artwork will be added to his edition-limited portfolio and advertised via various venues, including his website. Please send resume links or attached files in PDF or DOC formats. Only serious inquiries, please. Thank you!

Last Two Weeks to Obtain Intern Credit and/or Get Your Internship, Research, or Co-op Added to your Transcript for Spring 2009

Have you found the internship or research position of your dreams on your own, but just don't know how to get credit for it this spring semester? Do you want a notation on your transcript for all your hard work, but are unsure how to proceed?

Well look no further! The staff at the UMBC Shriver Center is here to help!

That internship you found is important to obtain admission to graduate school and to find employment after graduation. You gain experience, can get paid, and could potentially obtain three upper level credits, all by interning only 8 to 10 hours per week.

Best of all, if you found an internship, co-op, or research position on your own for the spring, you can get the notation on your transcript (FREE OF CHARGE) - and be on your way to possibly receiving credit- its not too late. That's right, the deadline to add the intern notation or obtain credit for the spring semester is in two weeks.

IN ORDER TO GET YOUR INTERNSHIP/CO-OP/RESEARCH POSITION TO BE ADDED TO YOUR TRANSCRIPT:

1. Either call (410-455-2493) or stop by the Shriver Center on the ground floor of the Public Policy Building to make an appointment with a Coordinator.
2. Get a letter/memo from your employer (on company letterhead) verifying that you are interning 8-10 hours per week and bring it to your appointment.
3. Meet with your Coordinator to get enrolled in the Practicum (to have the notation put on your transcript as a university sanctioned experience) and have your potential credit options explained to you.
4. Enjoy your internship, co-op, or research position!

If you do not already have an internship lined up but are interested in obtaining one, we’ll be glad to help you with that as well.
