Apply to become an AmeriCorps VISTA member with the Service-Learning Program at The Shriver Center!
· AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to serve as full-time volunteers for one year.
· The Service-Learning VISTA will work with The Shriver Center to recruit UMBC student volunteers, increase community partnerships, and develop self-sustaining service opportunities that bring the resources of UMBC to our local community members and partners.
· The VISTA member will receive health insurance, a travel allowance (for work-related meetings and events), and a taxable living allowance of approximately $11,000 for their year of full-time service (August 2009-August 2010).
· After successfully completing the service year, the VISTA will be eligible to receive either $1,200 in cash or an AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 that can be used toward the repayment of student loans or school tuition.
This is a perfect way to get more hands on experience prior through a variety of ways: student development, partnership building, working with high needs populations, etc. Take a break before going on to graduate school and have money on-hand to pay for school loans.
