Academy for Educational Development Seeks PAID Data / Statistics Intern

Starting Salary: $15.00 (Hourly) + commensurate with work experience and education

Project Summary: The Education Policy and Data Center (EPDC) was launched in 2004 by the Academy for Educational Development, with funding from USAID. The EPDC’s mission is to improve information and policies for education through better access and use of data and policy-oriented evaluation and research. The EPDC houses the world’s largest multi-source, sub-national database for education with capability to view data with maps and graphs; the EPDC is developing tools for better interpretation of education data and analysis of important issues. One of the EPDC’s primary global resource services is to provide data that is: more timely than found elsewhere; sub-national; from household, administrative and international sources.

Position Summary: The intern will help implement the EPDC’s mission to improve global access to education information by contributing to the ongoing expansion and updating of the database. Specifically, the intern will: work with household surveys to extract indicators using Stata programs prepared by the EPDC; format data from global websites as identified by EPDC staff; be an administrator of the database,uploading data to the database, and querying data housed in the database.

Essential Job Functions: 1. Use Stata programs for the extraction of data from household surveys. The intern will be responsible for running the programs, checking the data’s reliability, consistency, and quality. This task requires particular attention to detail, ability to recognize small errors in large information sets, understanding of data, basic understanding of programming, and knowledge of Stata (or ability learn software quickly).
2. Upload data to the database. This task requires attention to detail, handling complex data, error identification, communication with database manager.
3. Query data already housed in the database. This task requires attention to detail, understanding of relational databases and structured query language (sql), or a willingness to learn both. 4.Review and collect data from administrative sources. This requires ability to filter large amounts of visual information on websites to identify the information required; the ability to plan data organization; good knowledge of excel to format the data; knowledge of some foreign languages is desirable in particular – French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Swahili, Chinese, Russian.
5. Other job functions may be assigned that relate to presentation, use and compilation of education data.

Specific Knowledge Requirements:
Knowledge of education statistics.
