Two Great ON CAMPUS Internships with the Commons Arts Program!

Internship With The Commons Arts Program

Internship in Curation of Personal Work

Internship Goal: To learn about how to install, uninstall, label, classify, and market not only the student’s own work, but any work that comes through the gallery spaces during the time of internship.

Responsibilities: Student will be responsible for all of the aspects of hanging their own show. They will also be responsible for writing a 5-10 page paper describing and reflecting on their experience as well as referencing at least one artist as an influence. The internship coordinator and the student’s advisor will review this paper.

Duration of Internship: The student will intern for one semester. They will meet with the point person in charge of the internships, defined by The Commons Arts Program, one or two times per week to fulfill an 8-10 hour a week requirement in which the student will work on their project, meet with the internship coordinator, and perform general gallery duties. The student will then show their body of work in the pre-determined space, in either December for fall internships, or May for spring internships.

Credit: The student may earn either 3 or 6 credits for this internship. The student will need to meet with their advisor to determine which is right for them.

Requirements: Applicant must be a full time undergraduate student, preferably in The Visual Arts Department, but it is not mandatory. Student must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Student must provide a CD of 10-15 examples of artwork made in the last 2 years. Verification of these requirements and portfolio pieces should be submitted to the internship coordinator through The Commons Arts Committee. After the initial requirements are turned it, the applicant may be asked to come in for an interview.

Internship in Curation of Local Artist

Internship Goal: To learn how to install, uninstall, label, classify, and market a gallery show of a local artist of the student’s choosing. The student will also help with all other shows that come through The Commons Galleries. The student will choose a local artist and curate a show of their work.

Responsibilities: The student will be responsible for contacting a local artist of their choosing and curating a show of that artist’s work. The student will be responsible for all aspects of this show including preparation and hanging of the artwork. They will also be responsible for writing a 5-10 page paper describing and reflecting on their experience as well as writing about the artwork and the artist themselves. The internship coordinator and the student’s advisor will review this paper

After the initial requirements are turned it, the applicant may be asked to come in for an interview.
