We are conducting two research studies to examine quality of life in colorectal cancer patients, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The aims of these studies are twofold. Study 1 is a larger, prospective study investigating quality of life in colorectal cancer patients along the cancer trajectory (i.e., from diagnosis through survivorship) in colorectal cancer patients. Using Study 1 as a primary method of identifying patients with sexual and intimacy-related concerns, Study 2 is a controlled trial of a 4-session skills-based telephone intervention designed to address such concerns for couples facing colorectal cancer.

We are looking for a student with a strong interest in psychology research, especially health psychology, to help with these studies (8-12 hours per week). This is an unpaid internship for the spring semester; the student will receive 3 academic research credits for participating in this internship. An ideal candidate is a student who is highly detail-oriented, motivated, and who may have an interest in pursuing graduate work in clinical psychology or a similar field. The student will be asked to complete tasks involved in running these studies including data entry and management, subject screening and recruitment, administration of study surveys, and general administration. Involvement in study tasks will depend on the student’s interests, initiative and skill level. Opportunities to engage in more complex tasks, including contributing to poster presentations, may also be possible. In return for assistance with tasks, the student intern will learn about the aspects of conducting psychology research within an academic medical center and will gain skills involved in conducting research studies. The student will participate in a broad didactic component with training in research skills, consisting of didactic readings and discussions and skills training. This internship will be consistent with departmental guidelines for internships/research courses. The particular details of the didactic element of this internship may be altered to fit with the student’s interest and goals. Opportunities to participate in publications and/or presentations with the study team may be possible and will depend on the student’s interests and initiative.
