PAID Research Internship with the NAACP

The NAACP Education Department, a division of the Programs Department, seeks a research intern for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters to work on projects addressing school discipline policies, core standards implementation, and planning our biannual Daisy Bates Education Summit.

The ideal candidate will be able to work 10-12 hours per week. Ideal candidates will be at least a matriculating junior or senior in a four-year college or university. Graduate students are encouraged to apply. Please make note of the application process as well as the September 3 deadline date.

Experience and Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will:
· Possess a great interest in social justice and the advancement of civil rights. Understanding of the mission of the NAACP as well as the goals of the Education department and our national agenda.
· Maintain a professional and polished demeanor. Must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects, take initiative, work well with others, and meet deadlines consistently in a fast-paced environment.
· Be proficient in MS Word, Excel, and online research. Must possess excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Skill with Powerpoint and Publisher are also a plus.
· Be in pursuit of a degree in one of the following disciplines: education, sociology, urban studies, public policy or African American Studies or other Ethnic Studies program. Special consideration will be given to candidates focusing on Early Childhood and/or Education Policy.

Duties

Intern duties will vary with the project cycle, but interns can expect to do the following tasks:
· Research on relevant topics; compile data as needed, including creating support materials as needed.
· Provide administrative support to the Education department staff; assisting with correspondence as needed; and other administrative tasks as assigned.
· Provide logistical and planning support for the Education department’s upcoming events.
· Assist with constituent problem solving and requests for information.

Compensation

All interns will receive a stipend. Additional compensation will be dependent on experience and specialized area of expertise. This internship is also available for course credit; the NAACP will work with your program supervisor to coordinate.
