After School Volunteers Need for Vision Foundation

The Vision Foundation supports leadership development for youth in Baltimore by engaging them in activities to develop their social skills, academic readiness, and ability to live healthy lifestyles. They work in partnership with three local schools to achieve this vision: the Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship, Dunbar Middle School, and the Alternative School of West Baltimore.

They are currently looking for Program Leader volunteers who will work with youth in this after-school program.

Under the direction of the Site Coordinator, the Program Leader (Volunteer) will provide assistance and tutoring to students in the after school program, and will lead engaging academic, enrichment, and recreation activities with groups of up to 20 students. Program Leaders will provide opportunities for students to develop & strengthen academic, physical, leadership and social skills. Volunteer Program Leaders work at The Vision Foundation, Inc. (VF) After School program sites (K-12).

Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education at UMBC seeks an On Campus Undergraduate Research Intern

Part-time, 12-15 hrs per wk, $10 per hour

Special Skills : Students must have as a career goal interest in the fields of environmental science or environmental engineering. Quantitative skills or interest in attaining them are required.

Position Description: CUERE, a research center on campus at UMBC, seeks one undergraduate student (interested in advancing his/her environmental science or engineering career) for part-time, entry-level lab/field/computational (paid) work at CUERE, 12-15 hours per week. No experience is necessary. Entering freshman or sophomore level is preferred, but entering juniors will also be considered. Tasks include calibrating rain gages in the laboratory; assisting CUERE faculty, staff, and graduate students in the field, and carrying out quality control of hydrologic data sets. Work hours are scheduled between 8 AM - 6 PM, M-F. Student availability should be in at least 4-hour chunks, owing to the nature of the work.

Give Time, BE MORE!

The BE MORE Program seeks to bridge racial, religious, and socioeconomic divides in and around Baltimore by bringing together different groups for interactive activities and discussions, called "twinnings." For this coming year, BE MORE will be working with the Park School (a private school) and Gardenville Elementary school (a public school) and bringing together these students once a month for interactive sport activities, followed by cross-cultural dialogue. By volunteering just a few hours a month, you can help to shape these experiences!

Volunteers are needed to facilitate the activities and discussion groups, and will be provided with training in late September to prepare them for the events. The dates for the upcoming twinning sessions between schools are:

Just a FYI on the importance of obtaining an internship while at UMBC.

In terms of starting salary offers, there is a definite financial advantage for students who have internship experience, according to results of NACE’s 2010 Student Survey. Overall, students in the Class of 2010 who had internships received an average salary offer of $41,580. Meanwhile, their classmates who didn’t take internships received an average starting salary offer of $34,601.

Volunteer to Support Adults with Multiple Sclerosis

According to the National MS Society, “Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another.”

What can I do to help?
The YMCA in Catonsville currently offers swim therapy for adults suffering from MS every Friday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. Through UMBC's Shriver Center and the Service-Learning Program, you can support these adults through weekly service with MS Swim.

What do volunteers do?
• float participants in the water
• learn how to/ assist in stretching participants
• socialize and snack on delicious treats after swimming

What are the other benefits of volunteering?
• improved self-esteem
• a broader perspective of the world
• new friendships with people who share similar values
• a new possible career path
• contacts/references in the community
• a notation on your transcript for participating in PRAC 096

Do I need any prior experience in physical therapy?
No, all volunteers are welcome. Training and instruction is provided by the Y of Maryland.

Organic Agriculture Internship Opportunity

Beyond Pesticides is a national non-profit membership organization in Washington, DC, founded in 1981, dedicated to educating the public about the toxic hazards of pesticides and safer alternatives. The organization advocates for strong policy to protect public health and the environment. This internship focuses on organic agriculture and the USDA's National Organic Standards.

Responsibilities may include:

* Researching health and environmental impacts of materials for use in organic agriculture.
* Producing materials, including factsheets, articles, report contributions, and online materials.
* Assisting in fielding phone calls and emails from the public, researching and answering information requests.
* Assist the executive director and program staff with outreach, research and administrative tasks on an as-needed basis.

Interns are given tasks that match their interests, skills and background with Beyond Pesticides’ goals. In addition to working on specific projects, interns will gain insight into the importance of grassroots action, the complexities of environmental issues, and how non-profits function.

Internships are based on a small ($600 monthly) stipend and vary in length from 3 months to 1 year.

Serve at the Maryland Food Bank on Fridays!

The Maryland Food Bank helps thousands of hungry people in Maryland by procuring and distributing food donations from manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies to organizations providing free food to the state's hungry.

Currently, the MD Food Bank in Halethorpe needs volunteers to serve weekly to help sort and pack food items and serve in their Community Kitchen on Fridays from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Transportation provided.

The Shriver Center Will Drive You To BARCS!

This Fall semester, The Shriver Center will be providing transportation to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter on Saturdays from 10am-1pm. UMBC student Kelly Cyr will be driving a van to BARCS on Saturday mornings during this time, and interested students should contact The Shriver Center at 410.455.2493 to register for the BARCS site and secure their spot in the van.

All students who participate in BARCS and utilize the Shriver Van for transportation to the site will be enrolled in the 096 Practicum, which enables students to receive a transcript notation that recognizes their participation in university-sanctioned community service.

Growth and Nutrition Division at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Seeks Interns

The Growth and Nutrition Division at the University of Maryland School of Medicine currently has volunteer positions and research internships available. The division conducts research with Pediatric patients and their families. Research interns gain experience in pediatric psychology, medicine, and get hands-on data collection experience.

With all volunteer/intern positions there are opportunities to attend meetings and seminars that allow for academic, career, and personal development. Additionally, all volunteers are required to complete human subjects research training (CITI) and HIPAA training, which is a valuable experience for anyone thinking of doing research, science, or medicine. Finally, parking vouchers are available for volunteers and volunteers may be able to get meal vouchers as well.

CHILDREN’S HEALTHWATCH
Children’s HealthWatch is a unique research and advocacy collaboration of pediatric specialists and advocates from six medical institutions across the United States, including a site in Baltimore. The goals of Children’s HealthWatch are to provide direct interventions for children at-risk for growth and nutrition problems and to research, educate, and inform policymakers regarding public programs that impact children's health and empower families through special outreach programs. Interns with Children’s HealthWatch get first-hand experience interviewing families in a medical setting, linking families to community resources, as well as experience in dissemination of research findings through involvement in writing groups and data analysis projects.

Do you want to give back to your community this Fall?

Students placed through the Service-Learning Program are enrolled in the 096 Service-Learning Practicum, which enables them to receive a notation on their transcript which recognizes participation in university-sanctioned community service. A 3-5 hour weekly commitment of time is required for participation in Service-Learning placements.

Academic credit is also available for students who are interested in connecting their service with a specific course or discipline.

Calling ALL Animal Lovers!

This Fall semester, The Shriver Center will be providing transportation to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) on Saturdays from 10am-1pm. Volunteers will assist the animals at the shelter by providing general care and physical activity for animals housed at the shelter.

All students who participate in BARCS and utilize the Shriver Van for transportation to the site will be enrolled in the 096 Practicum, which enables students to receive a transcript notation that recognizes their participation in university-sanctioned community service.

If you want to volunteer with BARCS on Saturdays - or any other day of the week - give a call to The Shriver Center at 410.455.2493 to sign up.

The deadline to register for all of our service-learning placements is Wednesday, October 6th!

What are you doing on Tuesday afternoons?

Become an after-school tutor and mentor with the College Gardens Youth Program!

This program works with local elementary and middle school aged children to provide them with structured activities that support their academic and social development. Volunteers assist students with homework and help lead educational enrichment activities for the students. Transportation is provided!

If you are interested in volunteering, the program takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:15-5:45pm. The program is in special need of volunteers who can help with Tuesday afternoon activities.

Please call The Shriver Center at 410.455.2493 to set up a time to come in and sign up or to just learn more about the program. Deadline for registering is October 6th.

The Learning Bank Needs GED Tutors!

Volunteer to help tutor adolescents and adults who are working to obtain their GED or other educational goals. Tutors are needed to assist with basic literacy support (reading/writing) and problem-solving/critical thinking components (math).

Transportation is provided on Tuesday mornings from 9:30am-12:30pm and Thursday evenings from 5pm-8:30pm. If you are interested in volunteering on these days, please call The Shriver Center at 410.455.2493 to set up a time to register. If you want to volunteer, but not on these days, let us know – other volunteer times are available!

Help the Homeless on Saturday mornings

The Westside Shelter is in need of weekly volunteers who can come and help out on Saturdays from 9am-12pm! Work with other UMBC students to provide support to men at this temporary shelter located just 3 miles from UMBC.

Current projects planned for the upcoming semester include:
- Gardening
- Motivating the shelter residents to look for and apply for jobs
- Editing resumes
- Connecting shelter residents with health care resources
- GED tutoring

Maryland Food Bank Needs Food Sorters & Kitchen Support

The Maryland Food Bank helps thousands of hungry people in Maryland by procuring and distributing food donations from manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies to organizations providing free food to the state's hungry.

Currently, the MD Food Bank in Halethorpe needs volunteers to serve weekly to help sort and pack food items and serve in their Community Kitchen on Fridays from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Transportation provided!

Students engaged in weekly service may enroll in Practicum 096, a 0-credit course that allows a service-learning notation to be added to your transcript. For more information, contact Melissa Huselton at huselton@umbc.edu.
