University of MD School of Medicine, Dept. of Pediatrics seeks Health Educator Assistant Internship

Compensation: Research or Internship Credit, Parking and Meal vouchers

Position Description: This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Division of Growth and Nutrition within the Department of Pediatrics under the guidance of Dr. Maureen Black. The interventionist will co-deliver a health- promotion intervention to middle school girls in Baltimore city as part of the Challenge! project. The intervention will take place during and after school. The intervention is an extension of the original Challenge! project and aims to prevent obesity, improve diet, and increase physical activity among adolescent girls. For this intervention, the interventionist will engage in moderate-vigorous physical activities with the adolescents one to two times each week at a local YMCA.

Responsibilities include recruiting participants, evening and weekend phone calls, delivering the intervention lessons, following-up with participants by phone, transporting class materials, attending weekly meetings, data entry, filing, and other office duties. Between cohorts, the interventionist will be expected to conduct baseline and environmental evaluations of the participants, schools, and neighborhoods. Requirements:
- Junior/senior undergraduate level student in Nutrition, Psychology, Physical Education, Public Health, or a related field
- Strong commitment to personal wellness through healthy eating and exercise
- nterest in being part of a school- and community-based intervention project serving African American adolescent girls in Baltimore City Middle Schools
- Experience abiding by strict research protocols
- Valid drivers license (please bring to interview)
- Ability to transport supplies and equipment (access to car)
- Promising applicants may be asked to do a mock health lesson. Successful applicants must receive clearance on State and FBI background checks as this position involves working in schools.

Time Commitment:
We ask that the potential intern be available for one of the following shifts:

Morning Shifts:
Monday and Wednesday- 9:00am-1:00pm
Monday and Friday- 9:00am-1:00pm
Tuesday and Thursday- 9:00am-1:00pm

Afternoon Shifts:
Monday and Wednesday- 1:00pm-5:00pm
Monday and Friday- 1:00pm-5:00pm
Tuesday and Thursday- 1:00pm-5:00pm
