Attention History Majors! Maryland State Archives needs Interns

The Maryland State Archives awards paid part-time archival internships to individuals who are interested in history and considering a career in archival science. Interns will participate in a variety of projects under the direction of professional archival staff. Students will gain career-relevant experience in an archives setting and contribute in making historical records more accessible to the public. The internship pays $10.63 to $11.25 per hour, based on the level of education. Housing, benefits, and transportation are not provided. The internship is open to all qualified individuals without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.

Internships are located at the Baltimore City Archives, a municipal repository currently administered under the auspices of the Maryland State Archives. The internship experience is designed to assist the Archives staff in processing textual collections and placing them into a publicly accessible database. Two opportunities exist:

Baltimore City Historical Records Description Project
This internship focuses primarily on entering record series data into an online database.
Interns will review folders for content. Subjects range from city agencies records to mayoral papers. A great attention to detail is required for this position.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Collection Processing and Description Project

This internship, as a collection processor, requires knowledge of the basic principles of archival arrangement, description, preservation and re-housing techniques. The individual also enters descriptive information into an online database. Candidates with a background in music history or music performance are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
A part-time commitment of 16-32 hours per week is required. Workdays begin at 7:00AM and end at 3:30PM. There are no weekend or evening hours. United States citizenship is not required but nonresident aliens must apply for the appropriate U.S. visa if selected. Selected candidate should have basic computer skills; be proficient in English; have good handwriting, be flexible to changing situations; be reliable and responsible; be able to work independently as well as in a group environment; be able to accept supervision; be able to perform repetitive tasks; have good organizational skills; be detail oriented; and have the ability to lift a 40 lb box.
