On-campus Paid Mechanical or Civil Engineering Opportunity

Whiting-Turner - the construction management firm in charge of the new Performing Arts and Humanities Building on UMBC's campus - is seeking 1-3 engineering students to assist them during the Spring semester with construction of the building.

You will be learning management and technical aspects of a construction project both in the field and in the office. Your experience will include some or all of the following:

Quantity take-off
Layout Preconstruction/As-built surveys
Shop drawing review/approval and maintenance of shop drawing log
Submittal review/approval and maintenance of submittal log
Request for information (RFI) review/submission and maintenance of (RFI) log
Respond to RFIs generated by subcontractors
Interfacing with subcontractors & suppliers
Attending weekly jobsite progress meetings
Assist with coordinating the work between the Owner, Architect and Subcontractors/Suppliers through the administration of correspondence
Assist during the bid process: Subcontractor calls/Solicitation of Subcontractor bids, Help develop scopes of work, Bid recapitulation
Assist with reviewing construction documents and specifications to become familiar with the details of the project
Assist with reviewing all document revisions and clarifications Assist with maintaining field record keeping (i.e., daily reports, diary, safety inspections, quality inspections)
Assist with estimates/budgets/value engineering studies/constructability surveys
Assist with writing contracts & purchase orders
Assist with preparing billings to Owner and submitting change orders
Assist with approval of Subcontractor/Supplier invoices
Assist with ordering and expediting materials
Assist with scheduling and schedule updates
Assist with quality control and safety
Assist with settling contracts at the end of a project
Assist with permit process
Assist with performing costing, scheduling, estimating and project management with the computer.
You should be familiar with the following computer systems: Suretrak, Primavera, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Exchange.
Punchlist and project closeout
Cooperating and working with the Superintendent and other field project management
Such other duties as may be assigned
