Summer Internships with General Electric Middle River Aircraft Systems

General Electric is seeking engineering students interested in interning at their Middle River Aircraft Systems facility during Summer 2011.

Opportunities include:
Design/Development Engineering: component design and testing, life mgt., aerodynamic and thermodynamic design, performance, stress analysis, vibration analysis, and engine tests. Most projects rely on PCs or workstations to utilize modeling techniques.

Engine Services:
the unique experience of working hands-on with engine components and component repair processes. Most projects require constant interaction with engineering and customer support staff.

Manufacturing:
cycle time reduction, product flow, workstation design and tooling, mat'l handling, and environ. health and safety.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
• The VISTA member will receive health insurance, a travel allowance (for work-related meetings and events), and a taxable living allowance of approximately $11,200 for the year of full-time service (August 2011-August 2012).

• After successfully completing the service year, the VISTA will be eligible to receive either $1,200 in cash or an AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,350 that can be used toward the repayment of student loans or school tuition.

We are currently seeking conversation partners for several of our deaf students. No sign language skills are needed. Volunteers will meet in-person with students for at least one hour per week to converse by text message, instant messaging, Skype or Google Talk.

The General Assistant will implement nutrition lessons, cooking demonstrations and physical activity games to youth (6-13 years) who attend summer enrichment camps at recreation centers, community centers and faith-based organizations.

• Attend and participate in scheduled training sessions (prior to the summer program start date) to learn about the activities that will be implemented and to prepare materials/supplies for the program.
• In a team-teaching module, facilitate nutrition lessons focused on healthy cooking to groups of children 6-13 years of age at various sites for five consecutive weeks. The summer youth nutrition program will begin June 27th and will end August 9th, 2011.
• Collects and analyzes evaluation (pre/post-test) data for each summer camp site and submits the information to the supervisor during the last week of the program.

Qualifications:
• Education: Two years of college preferred.
• Teaching experience working with children 6-13 years of age who come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to learn and present basic nutrition information and physical activity lessons to youth.
• Skills in performing basic arithmetic calculations.
• Skills to maintain effective working relationships with team members and community leaders.
• Ability to effectively communicate with youth.
• Ability to lift and transport supplies and equipment.
• Must work well in a team environment and have a flexible schedule.
• Must have an automobile, valid driver’s license, and be willing to travel within Montgomery County. A criminal background check must be completed prior to employment.

Salary:
This is a short-term (summer only) contractual position. Hourly wage is $9.00 per hour. Mileage reimbursement is available.

The Governor's Office of Crime Control & Prevention (GOCCP) is seeking a talented undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in criminal justice. GOCCP is Maryland's one stop shop for resources to improve public safety. At GOCCP, the Intern will experience the inner workings of state government from the vantage point of the Executive branch. The Intern will work to address current public safety policy challenges and will be tasked with managing at least one project during the summer.

Projects are to be completed under the direction of the Policy, Research & Training Division (PRT) Chief and a team of Policy and Statistical Analysts. PRT develops, implements, and evaluates State policy, technology and legislation that align with the priorities of the O’Malley-Brown Administration. Policy, research, and training solutions originate from identified needs of local stakeholders and are developed in collaboration with the Maryland Statistical Analysis Center to effectively measure results. Summer projects will involve research, writing, and collaboration with criminal justice stakeholders including GOCCP's local and federal partners.

Selection will be based on an applicant's educational and professional background, a demonstrated interest in public service, and the needs of GOCCP. Consideration will be given to experience with government work, policy analysis, legal research and writing, and communications.

The internship will run for three months – June, July, August and payment is $15/per hour.

Health Leads (formally known as Project HEALTH) is an organization that seeks to break the link between poverty and poor health. Though national in scope, Health Leads takes a local approach to finding innovative solutions to the health care crisis.

We mobilize college students to work in urban community clinics and provide low-income families in Baltimore with access to a wide variety of resources. Health Leads volunteers work closely with patients to navigate the resource landscape in order to address basic needs such as employment, housing, food, utilities, etc. We also work closely with doctors, nurses, lawyers, and social workers to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that complements the care provided by health professionals in the clinical setting. UMBC, in partnership with St. Agnes Hospital, has launched a family-resource desk to connect families to community resources critical to their health, safety and economic survival.
