President's Commission for Women Accepting Applications!

Public Allies Maryland is accepting applications for the 2011-2012 program year! Through our signature AmeriCorps program, Public Allies identifies talented young adults, ages 18-30, from diverse backgrounds who have a passion to make a difference and helps them turn that passion into a viable career path working for community and social change. We seek diverse, dedicated, service-minded individuals to serve in our full-time, ten-month, paid leadership positions. The Market Edge organization is a center of excellence in the Retail Energy business that provides strategic marketing research and analytics, product, pricing and marketing & communications insights for our partners and customers. For 2011, we have internships in three key areas:
- Marketing

Interns will be given the opportunity to work on projects and initiatives tied to specific retail energy markets/regions and/or a specific marketing functional area of discipline. Each intern will report to a director.

Health Leads Recruiting for Summer Volunteers!

Health Leads (formally known as Project HEALTH) is an organization that seeks to break the link between poverty and poor health. Though national in scope, Health Leads takes a local approach to finding innovative solutions to the health care crisis.

We mobilize college students to work in urban community clinics and provide low-income families in Baltimore with access to a wide variety of resources. Health Leads volunteers work closely with patients to navigate the resource landscape in order to address basic needs such as employment, housing, food, utilities, etc. We also work closely with doctors, nurses, lawyers, and social workers to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that complements the care provided by health professionals in the clinical setting. UMBC, in partnership with St. Agnes Hospital, has launched a family-resource desk to connect families to community resources critical to their health, safety and economic survival. The Shriver Center is currently seeking Service-Learning Interns for the 2011-2012 academic year. Interns play a pivotal role in the Service-Learning Program, which places over 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites. The S-L Intern position offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional development, as well as linkages to future leadership positions. The positions open for the 2011-2012 year are open to students from all majors!

The Choice Program's College Night: coordinate mentoring activities to adolescents visiting UMBC on Mondays from 5pm-8:30pm

College Gardens Youth Program: coordinate after-school activities to elementary and middle school aged youth on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 2:15pm-5:45pm

Education Based Latino Outreach (EBLO): provide academic and literacy support to Latino youth on Saturdays from 9am-1:45pm

MS Swim: provide one-on-one aquatic therapy support for adults who have Multiple Sclerosis at the Catonsville Y on Fridays/Sundays from 1pm-4pm

Refugee Youth Project at Patterson Park High School: provide tutoring and mentoring support to adolescent refugees on Wednesdays from 2:40pm-6:30pm

Summer Nutrition Education Interns Needed in Montgomery County- $9/HR

5 Student Interns Needed!
Provided by the University of Maryland Extension, Montgomery County Office
Timeframe: - June 27th- August 9th 2011
6 hours per day- five days a week
$9.00 per hour

OPEN TO ALL MAJORS, great for Psychology, HAPP, Education, SOWK, and Sociology majors.

Interviews will take place on campus at The Shriver Center.

Responsibilities:
The part-time (30 hr/wk) General Assistant will be hired to work with the EFNEP Summer Youth Nutrition Program in Montgomery County. The General Assistant will implement nutrition lessons, cooking demonstrations and physical activity games to youth (6-13 years) who attend summer enrichment camps at recreation centers, community centers and faith-based organizations.

• Attend and participate in scheduled training sessions (prior to the summer program start date) to learn about the activities that will be implemented and to prepare materials/supplies for the program.
• In a team-teaching module, facilitate nutrition lessons focused on healthy cooking to groups of children 6-13 years of age at various sites for five consecutive weeks. The summer youth nutrition program will begin June 27th and will end August 9th, 2011.
• Collects and analyzes evaluation (pre/post-test) data for each summer camp site and submits the information to the supervisor during the last week of the program.

Qualifications:
• Education: Two years of college preferred.
• Teaching experience working with children 6-13 years of age who come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to learn and present basic nutrition information and physical activity lessons to youth.
• Skills in performing basic arithmetic calculations.
• Skills to maintain effective working relationships with team members and community leaders.
• Ability to effectively communicate with youth.
• Ability to lift and transport supplies and equipment.
• Must work well in a team environment and have a flexible schedule.
• Must have an automobile, valid driver’s license, and be willing to travel within Montgomery County. A criminal background check must be completed prior to employment.

Salary:
This is a short-term (summer only) contractual position. Hourly wage is $9.00 per hour. Mileage reimbursement is available.

AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to serve as full-time volunteers for one year.

WHAT VISTA POSITIONS CAN I APPLY FOR?

• The MDCC VISTA will work with UMBC’s Service-Learning Program and two middle school partners in the implementation of 3 key campus-community projects:
o Plan college access visits to campus for local middle school partners
o Coordinate curriculum-based service-learning projects with middle school partners
o Recruit UMBC students to serve as volunteers for service-learning activities

• The BALTIMORE CARES VISTA positions will divide their time between the Office of the Mayor-City of Baltimore, a community-based program, and UMBC's Service-Learning Program in this new collaboration. The VISTAs will develop and implement an interdisciplinary service-learning curriculum focused on the problem of vacant lots and drug addiction in the city. Multiple VISTA positions available.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
• The VISTA member will receive health insurance, a travel allowance (for work-related meetings and events), and a taxable living allowance of approximately $11,200 for the year of full-time service.

• After successfully completing the service year, the VISTA will be eligible to receive either $1,200 in cash or an AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,350 that can be used toward the repayment of student loans or school tuition.

The Links, Incorporated (http://www.linksinc.org/) founded in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The Links members are newsmakers, role models, mentors, activists and volunteers who work toward the realization of making the name “Links” not only a chain of friendship, but also a chain of purposeful service.

About DIA
The Defense Intelligence Agency is a Department of Defense combat support agency and important member of the United States Intelligence Community. With over 16,500 military and civilian employees worldwide, DIA is a major producer and manager of foreign military intelligence. We provide military intelligence to war-fighters, defense policymakers, and force planners in the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community, in support of U.S. military planning and operations and weapon systems acquisition.

The Program
DIA’s Academic Semester Internship Program provides promising undergraduate seniors and graduate students enrolled as full-time degree-seeking students at universities and colleges, located within commutable distances to DIA locations, the opportunity to gain practical work experience in intelligence analysis while enrolled in classes. The Agency offers a limited number of paid academic semester internships. Interns can be appointed for two semesters (depending on the university calendar) normally beginning in September. Students may be extended for a second semester, and are employed as part-time temporary employees (working between 16 and 20 hours per week).
Eligibility requirements are the same, regardless of pay status. All interns must be granted a security clearance and successfully pass a drug screening test prior to being made a final offer.

Eligibility Criteria
• Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at universities and colleges located near/in the following localities only: Washington, D.C., Huntsville, AL, Tampa, FL, Miami, FL, Charlottesville, VA, Omaha, NE, Scott Air Force Base, IL, and Colorado Springs, CO.
• Current enrollment in a baccalaureate or graduate degree program which is primarily focused on skills that are deemed critical to DIA such as: foreign area studies, computer science, business administration, human resources, public administration, international relations, legal, political science, chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, pharmacology, toxicology, engineering, or intelligence analysis related courses.
• Completion of 30 semester hours or its equivalent at the time of participation in the program.
• A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent at the time of application.
• US citizenship of applicant. Please be aware that security clearances can not be granted to applicants who hold dual citizenship. All finalists must pass a drug screening test.
• Please note that the security clearance processing and drug screening test can not be conducted while the applicant is overseas.
• All applicants conditionally accepted for internships, and all DIA employees are subject to initial and periodic counterintelligence (CI) scope polygraph tests, and drug tests.

Politics and the Environment: Internships in Annapolis with the Maryland League of Conservation Voters

The Maryland League of Conservation Voters is the political voice of the environmental community in Maryland advocating for sound conservation policies, promoting pro-environment candidates and holding elected officials and appointed leaders accountable for protecting and restoring the environment. The Maryland League of Conservation Voters Education Fund works to maximize the participation of conservation minded voters in public policy decisions made at the state levels regarding Maryland’s environment and natural resources.

Volunteers Needed: Refugee Youth Project @ Patterson Park High School

The mission of the Refugee Youth Project (RYP) is to facilitate a program committed to tutoring and mentoring the adolescent refugee population in Baltimore. UMBC's Service-Learning program is recruiting students to volunteer with RYP at Patterson Park High School on Wednesdays from 2:30-6:30pm. This is an opportunity for the UMBC community to aid in the assimilation of one of the under represented youth groups in Baltimore City and further promote their education while providing a significant window of opportunity that these students would not other wise have access to.

“RYP students come from 17 different countries, including Liberia, Senegal, Mauritania, Eritrea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, and Bhutan.”

Transportation by way of the Shriver Center Vans will be provided for all volunteers who sign up with the 096 Practicum. You can buff up your resume and transcript with a service-learning practicum notation.

The Shriver Center encourages volunteers to sign up by February 18th so that they may be available to attend one of the two available mandatory training sessions. The first is on Wednesday, February 16th at John’s Hopkins University and the second is right here on UMBC’s campus on February 21st from 3-6 pm.

Volunteer with the Adult Literacy Program & Help Change Lives!

The Adult Literacy Program is a program at The Learning Bank that provides one-on-one tutoring to adults in a broad range of subjects, ranging from literacy skill development to math skill building, and GED preparation.

The Shriver Center's Service-Learning program is offering a great opportunity for students to get involved with the Adult Literacy Program this spring: Sign up as a Volunteer on Thursdays from 5:00pm-8:30pm.

Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship

2011 Fellowship Dates

The Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship is a ten week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency. Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback.

Mayoral Fellows receive stipends and are placed in agencies based on their background, interests and the needs of the agencies and departments.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in the nonprofit sector to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending Maryland institutions. Participating interns work for ten weeks full-time from June6th to August 12th while participating in bi-weekly seminars in nonprofit management. Each participating student receives a $3,000 stipend.

INTERNSHIP BENEFITS
College and university undergraduate and graduate students from various majors are provided with an opportunity to build valuable skills, explore career choices within the nonprofit sector and gain experience managing and leading public service organizations. In doing so, the Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program makes an important contribution to the development of the state’s current and future workforce and citizenry.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
• Eligible applicants must be graduate or undergraduate students attending a two- or four- year college or university in Maryland with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. In addition, all undergraduate applicants must be entering their junior or senior year during the Fall 2011 semester.
• Candidates must intern full-time for 10 weeks from June 6 to August 12, 2011.
• Interns must be willing to travel to the Baltimore area as necessary during the ten weeks of the program to attend four to five professional development seminars conducted by the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
• Special consideration for admittance into the program will be given to applicants who have secured a summer internship in a Maryland non-profit at the time of application. However, assistance will be given to students without a placement once they are admitted into the Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program introduces college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within MD State Government. For 10 weeks (June 6 – August 12, 2011), interns:
• Work in state government agencies on substantive tasks, including drafting speeches and correspondence, tracking legislation, attending hearings, assisting with constituent case work, and researching policy options
• Participate in seminars with top Maryland officials and make site visits to State facilities
• Develop policy papers on a significant issue facing Maryland (e.g. the Chesapeake Bay, crime, care for the elderly) and present their findings in person to the Governor

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be:
• Undergraduates attending a two- or a four-year college or university in Maryland, or Maryland residents attending an out-of-state college or university.

LET’S GO Boys and Girls, Inc. is in need of volunteers to assist us is implementing a LEGO robotics program and our own Simple Science and Everyday Engineering program at the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore. Stipends are available!

The mission of LET’S GO Boys and Girls, Inc. is to enable out-of-school organizations, especially those focused on the underserved, to deliver fun, hands-on STEM education activities to grow the number of students entering technical career pathways.

Interns play a pivotal role in The Shriver Center's Service-Learning Program, which places close to 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites. Open positions include:

Refugee Youth Project – Provide tutoring and mentoring support to adolescent refugees. Intern leads the group on Wednesdays from 2:30pm-6:30pm.
Project Team – Work with youth to stress teamwork and unity through fun and creative group activities. Intern leads the group on Mondays from 4pm- 7pm.
Adult Literacy Program at The Learning Bank – Assist adults with tutoring and GED prep. Intern leads the group on Tuesday evenings from 5pm-8:30pm; day of week for service is flexible.

Some Intern positions provide a stipend; all provide a “Service-Learning Leadership” transcript notation.

2011 American Association of People with Disabilities Internship Program

Each summer, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) hosts a summer internship program in Washington, DC for students with all types of disabilities.

AAPD's Summer Internships Program offers college students, law students, and other graduate and professional students with disabilities the opportunity to work in public service for ten weeks on Capitol Hill and at federal agencies. This ten-week experience gives interns the opportunity to gain invaluable hands-on experience in government, including insight into government office operations, public policy development, law-making and research, and constituents' roles in the legislative and administrative processes. Interns receive a stipend, travel to and from DC, and fully-accessible housing.

The 2011 AAPD Washington DC Summer Internships Program for Students with Disabilities is generously sponsored by Walmart, the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF) and the HSC Foundation.

Description

W. R. Grace & Co. The Learning Bank Needs GED Tutors!

Volunteer to help tutor adolescents and adults who are working to obtain their GED or other educational goals. Tutors are needed to assist with basic literacy support (reading/writing) and problem-solving/critical thinking components (math).

Transportation is provided on Tuesday mornings from 9:30am-12:30pm and Thursday evenings from 5pm-8:30pm. Volunteer to Support Adults with Multiple Sclerosis

According to the National MS Society, “Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another.”

What can I do to help?
The YMCA in Catonsville currently offers swim therapy for adults suffering from MS every Friday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. Through UMBC's Shriver Center and the Service-Learning Program, you can support these adults through weekly service with MS Swim.

What do volunteers do?
• float participants in the water
• learn how to/ assist in stretching participants
• socialize and snack on delicious treats after swimming

What are the other benefits of volunteering?
• improved self-esteem
• a broader perspective of the world
• new friendships with people who share similar values
• a new possible career path
• contacts/references in the community
• a notation on your transcript for participating in PRAC 096

Do I need any prior experience in physical therapy?
No, all volunteers are welcome. Training and instruction is provided by the Y of Maryland.

Give Time, BE MORE!

The BE MORE Program seeks to bridge racial, religious, and socioeconomic divides in and around Baltimore by bringing together different groups for interactive activities and discussions, called "twinnings." For this coming year, BE MORE will be working with the Park School (a private school) and Gardenville Elementary school (a public school) and bringing together these students once a month for interactive sport activities, followed by cross-cultural dialogue. By volunteering just a few hours a month, you can help to shape these experiences!

Volunteers are needed to facilitate the activities and discussion groups, and will be provided with training in late September to prepare them for the events. The dates for the upcoming twinning sessions between schools are:

PAID Research Internship with the NAACP

The NAACP Education Department, a division of the Programs Department, seeks a research intern for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters to work on projects addressing school discipline policies, core standards implementation, and planning our biannual Daisy Bates Education Summit.

The ideal candidate will be able to work 10-12 hours per week. Ideal candidates will be at least a matriculating junior or senior in a four-year college or university. Graduate students are encouraged to apply. Please make note of the application process as well as the September 3 deadline date.

If you found an internship, co-op, or research position for the fall already, you can get the notation on your transcript - and be on your way to possibly receiving credit- its not too late.

TO ADD INTERNSHIP/CO-OP/RESEARCH TO YOUR TRANSCRIPT:
1. Either call (410-455-2493) or stop by the Shriver Center on the ground floor of the Public Policy Building to make an appointment with a Coordinator.
2. Get a letter/memo from your employer (on company letterhead) verifying that you are interning at least 8-10 hours per week and bring it to your appointment. This is only needed if you found the position on your own and not UMBCworks.
3. Meet with a Shriver Coordinator to get enrolled in the Practicum (to have your internship/research noted on your transcript as a university sanctioned experience) and have your potential credit options explained to you.

PAID Service-Learning Leadership Positions Open for Fall!

The Shriver Center has 4 Service-Learning Intern positions open for the Fall 2010 semester. Interns play a pivotal role in The Shriver Center's Service-Learning Program, which places nearly 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites.

Open positions:
College Gardens Youth Program Service-Learning Intern #1 – Tutor children in academics and coordinate educational, artistic, and recreational activities for this after school program. The Intern drives the group to the site and leads the activities on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:15pm-5:45p.m.

College Gardens Youth Program Service-Learning Intern #2 – Tutor children in academics and coordinate educational, artistic, and recreational activities for this after school program. The Intern drives the group to the site and leads the activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15pm-5:45p.m.

College Night Mentoring Program Service-Learning Intern – Assist adolescent participants of The Choice Program with academics and development of positive social skills. Intern coordinates educational and recreational activities for the program on Mondays from 5pm-8:15pm.

Adult Literacy Program Service-Learning Intern – Provide one-on-one tutoring to adults in a broad range of subjects, ranging from literacy skill development to math skill building, and GED preparation. Intern drives the group to the site on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-8:30pm. Please note: If you are interested in this position, but not available on Tuesdays/Thursdays, please indicate your interest on the application and the evenings when you would be available to visit the site from 5-8:30pm during the week.

Benefits:
Each S-L Intern receives a $300-750 stipend for the semester, and a Service-Learning Leadership notation on their transcript with their enrollment in the 096 Practicum.

Maryland State Archives Seeks PAID Interns

The competitive selection process is based on an evaluation of the following application materials:

What: During the ten-week paid summer program, interns will engage in a variety of activities related to processing, managing, and interpreting archival collections. Individual intern assignments will vary, but duties may include electronic imaging, scanning, image processing, computer programming, record stripping, accessioning, web design, research, or writing. The intern program includes a heavy focus on the application of computer technology to
both the historical method and archival practice. Some assignments may require regular off-site work. Interns will receive an hourly wage, paid bi-weekly.

Hourly rates are based on education level: high school at $8.70 per hour, undergraduate at $10.63 per hour, and graduate at $11.25 per hour.

The Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in the nonprofit sector to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending Maryland institutions. Participating interns work for ten weeks full-time from June 1st to August 6th while participating in bi-weekly seminars in nonprofit management. Each participating student receives a $3,000 scholarship.

College and university undergraduate and graduate students from various majors are provided with an opportunity to build valuable skills, gain experience in managing and leading public service organizations, and explore career choices within this sector. In doing so, the Public Service Summer Internship Program makes an important contribution to the development of the state’s current and future workforce and citizenry.

Qualifications: Eligible applicants must be graduate or undergraduate with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. In addition, all undergraduate applicants must be entering their junior or senior year during the Fall 2010 semester. All majors are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland’s most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland’s integrated transportation system. Interns can gain experience in policy development, marketing, international relations, computer networking, engineering, planning and financing, public relations, public administration, neighborhood conservation and in many other areas. Placement opportunities are available at the MD Aviation Administration, MD Port Administration, MD Transit Administration, Motor Vehicle Administration, State Highway Administration, MD Transportation Authority, and The Secretary’s Office that serves as Headquarters for the MDOT.

Participating student earn $3,500 during eight weeks this summer.

McCarl Dental Group seeks interns- marketing research, database development, etc

As an intern at McCarl Dental Group, a student would be able to select from a wide range of projects. Someone interested in technology would be able to assist with development of an email communication system using MacPractice Dental software and Google. A business or marketing major could help refine our tracking system and establish a plan for the overall marketing program with a budget proposal helping define resource allocation for marketing projects. The balance of traditional and cutting edge marketing concepts is fascinating and a student interested in social media marketing could have hands on experience in helping develop and evaluate these programs while comparing them to results from our traditional print ad campaign.

McCarl Dental Group is a third Generation Dental practice serving over 10,000 patients with offices in Greenbelt and Millersville Maryland. We have a wonderful history of quality dental care and the highest professional standards. Drs. Clayton and Jay McCarl are fellows in the Academy of General Dentistry and Dr. Clayton McCarl serves on the Dean’s faculty teaching ethics to dental students at the University of Maryland Dental School. Final Week to Apply to the Governor's Summer Intern Program

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program introduces college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within MD State Government. For 10 weeks beginning June 7th, interns
• Work in state government agencies on substantive tasks, including drafting speeches and correspondence, tracking legislation, attending hearings, assisting with constituent case work, and researching policy options.
• Participate in seminars with top Maryland officials and make site visits to State facilities.
• Develop policy papers on a significant issue facing Maryland (e.g. the Chesapeake Bay, crime, care for the elderly) and present their findings in person to the Governor.

Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship

Stipend: $4,000 to $5,000
Fellowship Dates: June 7 - August 13, 2010

During a ten week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency, Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback. At the conclusion of the summer, Fellows will give presentations to the Mayor and various cabinet officials summarizing their placements and overall summer experience. The ultimate objective of the fellowship is to encourage talented individuals, with an interest in public service, to seek permanent positions within City government at the conclusion of their academic program.

Mayoral Fellows receive stipends and are placed in agencies based on their background, interests and the needs of the agencies and departments.

Campaign Internships in Baltimore County

Baltimore County, MD is more populous than four states and the District of Columbia. With over 700,000 residents as of the last census, it's larger than any Congressional District. A top tier countywide campaign is now accepting resumes for Spring and Summer internships. Ideal candidates are high-energy, excellent oral communicators, good listeners and have access to
their own transportation.

Spring Interns (volunteer) can expect to receive a comprehensive education in all substantive areas of campaign work: Field, Fundraising, Communications and Advance and their relationship to one another in building a campaign organization.

Summer internships, in addition to these rotations, also include a Specialized Field internship. 10 weeks of intensive organizing and training. Interns can expect to finish this program with enough experience to work as a field organizer in any Congressional race in the United States.

Paid Summer Leadership Intern Program for Sophomore

The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is currently accepting applications for its summer leadership program in Washington, DC and New York City. The Institute provides America’s best and brightest African American male college students with unparalleled networking opportunities, leadership development, and life-long mentorship.

New Service-Learning Class Offered This Spring!

Register to take ENGL 386 Adult Literacy Tutoring: Theory and Practice this Spring semester, and satisfy an AH requirement, too!

In this course, students will discuss theories of language and literacy acquisition pertaining to adult learners. They will then apply these theories in actual tutoring experiences. In addition, students will read and respond in writing to contemporary research concerning the social, political, and economic causes of illiteracy as well as suggested ways to ameliorate illiteracy on the social and individual levels. Authors whose work students may read include Paulo Freire, John Dewey, W.E.B. DuBois, Mike Rose, Glenda Hull, and Denny Taylor.

Service-Learning Component: This is a Service-Learning course and requires that students spend four hours per week serving as tutors to adult literacy learners in a Baltimore City community center. Students will be eligible to receive a transcript notation that recognizes this participation in university-sanctioned community service.

Note: This course is also listed as EDUC 386. Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of “C” or better; Shriver Center permission required for course. Cross-listed with ENGL 692. (AH).

PAID Service-Learning Intern Positions Open for Spring!

The Shriver Center has 4 Service-Learning Intern positions open for the Spring 2010 semester. Interns play a pivotal role in The Shriver Center's Service-Learning Program, which places close to 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites. Open positions include:

College Gardens Youth Program – Tutor children in academics and provide assistance for artistic, physical, and other recreational activities. Intern leads the group on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15pm-5:45p.m.
Project Team – Work with youth to stress teamwork and unity through fun and creative group activities. Intern leads the group on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm- 7pm.
College Night Mentoring Program – Assist participants of The Choice Program with academics and developing positive social skills. Intern co-leads the group on Mondays from 5p.m.-8:15p.m.
MS-Swim – Assist with water-based physical activity and various social opportunities. Intern leads the group on Fridays and Sundays from 1pm-4pm.

Each S-L Intern position receives a $500-750 stipend for the semester, depending on the service site.

Winter Film/Video Intern Needed ASAP- $10 per hour

Office of Government Relations (OGR) in the Department of Budget and Management Seeks Intern

Exciting Intern Opportunity for two students! Potential majors include economics, financial economics, BTA, political science, sociology, HAPP, history, etc....

The student would be working in the Office of Government Relations (OGR) in the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). OGR serves as the legislative liaison between DBM and the Maryland General Assembly and is responsible for coordinating the DBM's legislative activity. DBM is responsible for preparing and overseeing the progress of the budget through the budget committees, but also has a number of operational programs that are often affected by legislation introduced by members of the Maryland General Assembly. Therefore, the
selected intern would be working with program issues involving State personnel, the State Employees and Retirees Health Insurance Program (and health insurance legislation in general), State procurement, and information technology. In addition, the Office of Government Relations works very closely with the Governor's Legislative Office and all of the other State agencies to identify, follow and direct the position on legislation that has a cost or revenue impact on the State general fund and legislation that with fiscal policy issues.

Spring 2010 Internship with the Internal Revenue Service in DC!

The Internal Revenue Service is recruiting undergraduate students of all majors for a paid 15-week long Spring 2010 internship! Accepted participants receive scholarships covering the costs of The Washington Center’s Academic Program in addition to providing furnished housing facilities during the internship. Interns will also be provided with living stipends.

Qualifications:
· United States citizenship;
· Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program of any major with a GPA of 3.5 or above;
· Undergraduate students must receive credit for participating in this program (if you have questions regarding this requirement, please contact katie.mckenzie@twc.edu);
· Available for a fifteen-week period beginning January 21st, 2010;
· Demonstrated experience and/or strong interest in working for the federal government.
· Preference will be given to students with evidence of community service or involvement.

Satisfy an AH Requirement with Service-Learning this Spring!

Register to take ENGL 386 Adult Literacy Tutoring: Theory and Practice this Spring semester!

In this course, students will discuss theories of language and literacy acquisition pertaining to adult learners. They will then apply these theories in actual tutoring experiences. In addition, students will read and respond in writing to contemporary research concerning the social, political, and economic causes of illiteracy as well as suggested ways to ameliorate illiteracy on the social and individual levels. Authors whose work students may read include Paulo Freire, John Dewey, W.E.B. DuBois, Mike Rose, Glenda Hull, and Denny Taylor.

Service-Learning Component: This is a Service-Learning course and requires that students spend four hours per week serving as tutors to adult literacy learners in a Baltimore City community center. Students will be eligible to receive a transcript notation that recognizes this participation in university-sanctioned community service.

Note: This course is also listed as EDUC 386. Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of “C” or better; Shriver Center permission required for course. Cross-listed with ENGL 692. (AH).

We offer hundreds of internships and numerous courses year-round, fall, spring, and summer semester/quarter, for students of ALL majors. Interns are provided with fully-furnished apartments throughout Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland (as well as in London and Australia). Participants may intern at such prestigious agencies as The White House, CNN, PBS, Amnesty International, Department of Defense, The Smithsonian, US Attorney's Office, Red Cross, Merrill Lynch, The National Institutes of Health, the EPA, and hundreds more. The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond is recruiting for an Outreach Intern in the Community Affairs Department. The position will be located in Baltimore, MD. This internship offers
an opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals and gain an understanding of community development finance, the Federal Reserve System and a broad range of community revitalization issues. The intern will have the opportunity to develop research, writing, program and policy planning and implementation skills.

Great Tourism Internship with Baltimore County!

The Conference and Tourism unit in Baltimore County's Department of Economic Development is a newly created team working to create the product and marketing strategy to increase business and leisure travel and tourism in Baltimore County.

The Conference and Tourism unit is searching for a school year intern that could extend into the summer. This is an exciting opportunity for students interested in working for a start-up organization in the public sector. The student will gain valuable experience in market research, customer service, public administration, tourism and hospitality, communications, and promotions.

The intern will serve as a part-time (10-20 hours) contractual volunteer working with the Conference and Tourism Director, while contributing to the units new strategy.

Responsibilities vary, but may include staffing the front desk of the Visitor
Center, researching and creating a database of the tourism products in Baltimore County, inputting and analyzing primary and secondary data, writing original content for promotional pieces, e-newsletters, the web, and memos, and assisting on special projects.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

As an intern, you would be asked to work in Annapolis at least two days each week during the 13-week legislative session. Work schedule is flexible based on number of days the student is available. PAID Internship with After School Program

The Shriver Center is recruiting for a Service-Learning Intern with the College Gardens Youth Program. The College Gardens Youth Program provides academic tutoring and assistance for artistic and recreational activities as part of this after-school program, Tuesday & Thursday, from 2:15-5:45pm.

The position includes a $750 stipend for the semester. Service-Learning Interns are student who aspire to take on a leadership position with a service site. They shape the service experiences of other students, and are responsible for driving students to the site each week (van training provided), and leading 2 reflection sessions for their volunteers (support and resources provided).

Internship Opportunity (unpaid) with The Office of U.S. Representative John P. Sarbanes

The office of Congressman Sarbanes is seeking service-oriented undergraduate students for internships in the Towson District Office.

Responsibilities include greeting visitors, opening and distributing mail, data entry, supporting administrative needs in the office, assisting with constituent casework and other duties relating to constituent services. Additional opportunities include attending staff meetings, attending events outside the office with the Congressman or staff, attending meetings with constituents, representing the office at an outreach venue, various long term projects and trips to our Washington, DC office.

Internships can be tailored to emphasize those policy areas in which a student has a particular interest. Students with a focus on social work or counseling will have opportunities to work directly with constituents performing intake, assessment and learning how to use Congressional resources to resolve constituents’ issues.

Applicants must be reliable with the ability to multi-task and strong communication and organizational skills.

Department of Commerce Office of the Secretary Internship Program

The mission of the Department of Commerce (DOC) Office of the Secretary Fall Internship Program is to engage and empower developing leaders with a passion for public service. The program will expose students to opportunities in the Federal Government and the potential to find passion in a career in public service.

Interns will gain unique experience though their placement in one of several DOC offices.
The students will work closely with the Special/Confidential Assistants in their respective offices. This will keep them engaged in the political process, maintain strong lines of communication and clearly define roles and responsibilities. On a biweekly/
monthly basis, the Internship Board will coordinate visits to local exhibits including the National Archives, lectures, arrange photo/meet‐and‐greet with Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, White House Tours, etc.

White House Internship Programs seeks Applicants

Applications for the 2010 Spring White House Internship are now available at whitehouse.gov/about/internships.

Applications are due September 20, 2009. The application includes two essays, three letters of recommendation and a resume. Each applicant will be evaluated on three basic qualities: a commitment to public service, demonstration of leadership in the community and dedication to the mission of this Administration. The applicant's communication, writing and office skills will also be reviewed and considered. An applicant's GPA is not figured into the final score, and each application is reviewed on a semi-blind basis.

PROGRAM
This select group of young men and women from across the country dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community, and the nation. These committed citizens become a part of the White House team. The assignments given to an intern on any given day could include conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, and writing memos.

While the interns’ individual responsibilities and tasks vary, they are united through weekly events and, most importantly, through service. Interns participate in a long-term service project to help the surrounding community. This is a great opportunity to promote leadership and a way to learn about their fellow intern class. Each week, interns come together for a speaker series with senior staff members and participate in off-site field trips around D.C. In addition, during the summer a few interns are chosen as mentors for the D.C. Scholars.

Paid internships and Part-time Research Assistantships Available

The responsibilities of the intern would be focused on helping with tasks such as client scouting, client management, and contract negotiations. These ten and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a myriad of careers in the federal and corporate sectors.

To date, HNIP has helped over 7,000 students find internships that closely relate to their majors or career goals. Though we started in 1992 with only 24 interns working at one participating federal agency, we have expanded our program each year. In 2008, we helped match over 600 students to internships at over 40 federal agencies and corporations.

Seeking Creative Individual for Project Management, Research and Design!

Christos J. Palios, Baltimore-based panorama artist, will shoot a photographic period piece as a scene from daily life in the 1930s through the 1940s. While working closely with a local museum, along with 15-20 models and actors, he plans to bring this project to fruition this upcoming May or June. He is seeking one enthusiastic, diligent candidate to assist on a number of levels, from initial preparations and research through to the final shoot date. At this time, this is an unpaid opportunity with potential reward and compensation upon project completion.

Position Overview: ideal candidate must exhibit congeniality and enthusiasm, genuine dedication and synergy when working with artist, museum officials, and most importantly, models and actors. Photographic experience is not mandatory; a creative and resourceful mind is essential! Organization is a must. Considering this is a period piece from a specific era in history, candidate should have knowledge and experience, if not at minimum a great willingness to research authentic clothing worn, cultural etiquette, environmental scene accuracy, prop acquisition, and other details from that time in order ensure an accurate set. Emphasis is on history and fashion/apparel. Candidate should expect approximately 3-5 hours each week for phone and in-person meetings/brainstorming sessions, research, and eventual interviews and vintage apparel shopping with models and actors.

Christos intends this to be fun, collaborative, and artistically-stimulating. Final artwork will be added to his edition-limited portfolio and advertised via various venues, including his website. Internship Open House at Rams Head Live!

Rams Head Live is hosting an Internship Open House on Friday, February 13th for prospective intern applicants. The event begins at 9:00am at Rams Head Live. Governor's Summer Internship Program Applications Now Being Accepted!

The Governor's Summer Internship Program was created to introduce college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within Maryland State Government. For 10 weeks, beginning June 1st, GSIP Interns will:

* Work on substantive projects with senior-level public administrators and policy makers, in departments or policy areas that closely correspond with each intern's field of study or career interests. Duties often include attending meetings, drafting correspondence, tracking legislation, and researching policy options.
* Develop policy papers that address significant issues facing Maryland today. These papers, researched in teams, are presented to the Governor and/or other senior staff members at the end of the program.
* Attend site visits and seminars designed to introduce interns to specific rewards and challenges of public administration.
* Gain valuable exposure to the tremendous talents and resources of Maryland State Government while earning a $3,000 stipend.

A Thanksgiving Message from the Shriver Center

Are you dreading that Thanksgiving conversation?

You know, the one that goes something like:

Family-member: So, what are you going to do next summer?

You: I don't know, probably the same thing I did last year.

Family Member: Well, with all the news about the economy, I don't think it's smart to put all your eggs in one basket. And you know you can't mooch off of us another year.

You: Stop bugging me! I just don't know where to begin!

Shriver Center Spring Search Kick-Off: Walk-In Hours

Looking for an internship this spring?
Do you want to fatten up that resume a little bit?
Do you want to potentially get paid AND possibly earn credit for it?

The UMBC Shriver Center can help you answer all of those questions. The Shriver Center has MANY PAID and UNPAID INTERNSHIPS available for ALL majors this upcoming SPRING and we need students to fill them.

Internships are important to obtain admission to graduate school and to find a position after graduation. You gain experience and are almost certainly eligible to earn upper level credit by interning 8 to 10 hours per week.

Once you meet with a coordinator, The Shriver Center will send your resume to organizations that interest you. In other words, we'll do the mailing and employer outreach on your behalf.

To get started stop by the Shriver Center October 21, 22, or 23 between 9am and 4pm for the Spring 2009 Kick Off. Simply bring an electronic copy of your resume on a USB drive or CD and we'll get you set up on UMBCworks and ready to look for positions THAT DAY!

Washington Internship Program Info Session on Monday, 10/20

Representatives of the Washington Internship Program will be holding an information session at The Shriver Center (1st FL of Public Policy) at UMBC on Monday, October 20th from Noon-1pm.

The WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP PROGRAM -- a combination of work and study -- places college students and graduates in top-level internships in our nation's capital. Here are just a few among thousands of places where interns in the program have worked:

United States Congress and Senate, NBC, The White House, U.S. Commerce Department
Foreign embassies, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Smithsonian Museums, Saks Fifth Avenue, Democratic/Republican National Committees, Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, etc.

Students are placed according to their career goals and areas of interest. Exciting Community Relations Intern Opportunity w/Citibank

Citibank, a Fortune 500 company, is offering an Exciting opportunity for an intern to work in their Community Relations division.

Students will learn how a Fortune 500 company assesses potential
grantees, solicits applications, prepares applications for submission and tracks those grants. Financial Institutions have specific criteria to meet for federal regulators and students will learn about these.

Position Description:
Students will intern roughly 15 hours per week and assist with Citigroup Foundation Grants submitted for Maryland, DC and Virginia. Interns will learn the grant submission process including format, program areas, and grantee information needed. The intern will review grants before submission to ensure all sections are filled out correctly and attachments are complete and track grants submitted to New York.

Shriver Center on the Road: Visit T. Rowe Price

VISIT T. ROWE PRICE TO LEARN ABOUT SUMMER 2009 INTERN POSITIONS on FRIDAY, November 14th

Instead of bringing the companies to campus, we’re taking you to the company!

Join your Shriver Center internship coordinators on FRIDAY, November 14th from 11:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. as they take you out to visit T. Rowe Price. Take a tour of the facility and hear about internship and future career opportunities within the Electronic Publishing and IT Department.

Transportation is provided, but an RSVP is required. You will receive confirmation of your registration prior to the trip date. Space is limited, so register early! Vans will leave the Shriver Center promptly at 11:15 a.m.

Student qualifications for T. Rowe Price visit include a 3.0 GPA and Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status required.

Majors: Computer Science, IS, Computer Engineering, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Communications. Students with interest in IT, help desk support, data systems, web design, graphics or publications are strongly encouraged to register.

PAID Internship During the MD Legislative Session!

If you've ever wondered what it's like to work during Maryland's hectic 90 day legislative session, look no farther! The Maryland Retailers Association is looking for an intern to help out during the 2009 Legislative Session.

The intern will assist the President and Legislative Director during the 2009 regular session of the Maryland General Assembly. Position involves preparing agendas for theLegislative Committee, reviewing bills, attending hearings, some research and some office work.

Pay for the internship is $2,500.00 for 14 week period - January 9 - April 17.
