The Internal Revenue Service is recruiting undergraduate students of all majors for a paid 15-week long Spring 2010 internship! Accepted participants receive scholarships covering the costs of The Washington Center’s Academic Program in addition to providing furnished housing facilities during the internship. Interns will also be provided with living stipends.

Qualifications:
· United States citizenship;
· Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program of any major with a GPA of 3.5 or above;
· Undergraduate students must receive credit for participating in this program (if you have questions regarding this requirement, please contact katie.mckenzie@twc.edu);
· Available for a fifteen-week period beginning January 21st, 2010;
· Demonstrated experience and/or strong interest in working for the federal government.
· Preference will be given to students with evidence of community service or involvement.

How to Apply:
Students should fill out an online application at http://secure.twc.edu. Students create a login name and password. They should select “Internship” in the drop down menu. They should then select Option 2, “Government Scholarship Programs”. Students are asked to select our Department of Commerce Application, as we are currently in the process of updating our other application materials. There is no application fee for our Government Scholarship Programs. Andrea Barron will host an open information session to inform UMBC students of all majors about unique academic internship opportunities in Washington, D.C., London and Australia. The session will be held on Thursday,October 22 from 12-1 in the Shriver Center's Large Conference Room (PUP 107).

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (www.twc.edu) offers college and university students and recent graduates the opportunity to intern full-time and earn academic credit in Washington, D.C., London and Australia. We offer hundreds of internships and numerous courses year-round, fall, spring, and summer semester/quarter, for students of ALL majors. Interns are provided with fully-furnished apartments throughout Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland (as well as in London and Australia). Participants may intern at such prestigious agencies as The White House, CNN, PBS, Amnesty International, Department of Defense, The Smithsonian, US Attorney's Office, Red Cross, Merrill Lynch, The National Institutes of Health, the EPA, and hundreds more. Interns also complete an academic course (selected from over 40 offered) and participate in a variety of career and professional programming and other activities through our Leadership Forum.

The Washington Center has a strong affiliation with UMBC and many students participate in our program every semester/quarter. Attend our information session and discover the life-changing experiences that your fellow classmates have had.

UMBC Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE) is seeking a Research Assistant for the Fall!

Student will assist Dr. Welty and graduate students with field work, lab work, data compilation and analysis for urban hydrology studies.

Pay is $10 - $12 per hour. Work in exchange for academic credit is another option.

Background in earth science or environmental science is preferred. Must be willing to work outdoors under conditions that include walking over uneven terrain, carrying bulky equipment, and contact with insects. GIS and computer skills are a plus.

Union of Concerned Scientists Sustainable Agriculture Internship
Internship dates: June 2009-August 2009 (3-month internship, flexible dates)

The UCS Food and Environment Program seeks an intern for three months, beginning in June 2009. Working primarily with our outreach coordinator, the intern will assist in implementing the field efforts associated with our campaign to pass federal legislation on the overuse of antibiotics in animal feed. This overuse, primarily in CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) promotes drug-resistant human infections, a growing public health crisis.

The intern will: i) be assigned specific target states and districts where she/he would serve as principal organizer (grassroots and grasstops) to generate support for this legislation, ii) work closely with local organizers in other key swing districts for the same purpose, and iii) prepare substantive pieces for use in field efforts. The intern may also be called on to carry out other campaign tasks, as needed, such as recruiting organizations from around the country to support the legislation or to renew their support.

Candidates interested in public policy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental issues are encouraged to apply. We will consider applicants with a wide variety of backgrounds. Candidates with interest and education in political science, agriculture, environmental science, and public health, or with a background in political campaigns/organizing efforts are especially encouraged to apply.

Basic qualifications: Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, strong oral and written communication skills, and proficiency with computers.

Education requirements: Enrolled as an undergraduate or Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

Hours and pay: 35 hours/week; monthly pay commensurate with experience and training.

Location: Union of Concerned Scientists, Washington, DC office.

Each participating student receives a $3,000 scholarship.

College and university undergraduate and graduate students from various majors are provided with an opportunity to build valuable skills, gain experience in managing and leading public service organizations, and explore career choices within this sector. In doing so, the Public Service Summer Internship Program makes an important contribution to the development of the state’s current and future workforce and citizenry.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland's most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland's integrated transportation system. During the summer, interns are placed in senior-level assignments in one of MDOT's integrated system of agencies. Then during the subsequent fall or spring semesters, students participate in a part-time internship in one of MDOT's agencies. The MDOT Fellows Internship Program is offered by The Shriver Center in partnership with the Office of the Secretary of Transportation.

Well look no further! The staff at the UMBC Shriver Center is here to help!

That internship you found is important to obtain admission to graduate school and to find employment after graduation. You gain experience, can get paid, and could potentially obtain three upper level credits, all by interning only 8 to 10 hours per week.

Best of all, if you found an internship, co-op, or research position on your own for the spring, you can get the notation on your transcript (FREE OF CHARGE) - and be on your way to possibly receiving credit- its not too late. That's right, the deadline to add the intern notation or obtain credit for the spring semester is in two weeks.

IN ORDER TO GET YOUR INTERNSHIP/CO-OP/RESEARCH POSITION TO BE ADDED TO YOUR TRANSCRIPT:

1. Either call (410-455-2493) or stop by the Shriver Center on the ground floor of the Public Policy Building to make an appointment with a Coordinator.
2. Get a letter/memo from your employer (on company letterhead) verifying that you are interning 8-10 hours per week and bring it to your appointment.
3. Meet with your Coordinator to get enrolled in the Practicum (to have the notation put on your transcript as a university sanctioned experience) and have your potential credit options explained to you.
4. Enjoy your internship, co-op, or research position!

JCET Earth Science Explorers Program 2009

June 1 - August 7, 2009

The 2009 JCET Earth Science Explorers Program provides students enrolled in undergraduate programs the opportunity to engage in actual Earth science and atmospheric physics research over a ten-week period. Students are matched with a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center researcher and/or UMBC faculty member and work on a research project at the UMBC campus in Baltimore or at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Facility in Greenbelt, Maryland. All areas of Earth Sciences projects are available including:

* Remote sensing of Earth
* Hydrology
* Global climate analysis and modeling
* Vegetation and ecosystem monitoring
* Tropical precipitation and storm systems
* Coastal processes/sea level rise
* Volcanic hazards and climate impacts
* Remote sensing of planetary atmospheres
* Space Geodesy, Geophysics, GPS, orbits

The program is open to all U.S. citizens and students holding the appropriate visa. Students are required to present a poster. $4,000 Stipend, local housing, and the cost of round-trip travel to Baltimore are provided.

HACU National Internship Program program recruits college students for paid summer and semester-long internships at federal agencies and private corporations in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country. These ten and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a myriad of careers in the federal and corporate sectors.

To date, HNIP has helped over 7,000 students find internships that closely relate to their majors or career goals. Though we started in 1992 with only 24 interns working at one participating federal agency, we have expanded our program each year. In 2008, we helped match over 600 students to internships at over 40 federal agencies and corporations.

There is an undergraduate research opportunity this Spring with Prof. Erle Ellis, investigating spatial patterns of human/environment interactions.

The student will participate in existing research projects together with others in the lab, including graduate students. Research may involve fieldwork and will make use of existing spatial data at global, regional and local scales (population, land use, land cover, terrain, climate, gas fluxes and socioeconomic variables). The successful applicant will receive a stipend of $750 per semester, get hands-on research experience, and a great item for their CV/resume!

To be selected, the student must be an undergraduate, have demonstrated skills or interest in geospatial analysis and/or remote sensing, and an interest in human interactions with the environment. In addition to funding, the student may be eligible for internship/independent study credit.

Like all research, our work is goal-oriented and directed toward results; this is not a 9-5 job. Hours can be flexible as long as goals are achieved.

This position is funded by a grant from UMBC's Undergraduate Research Assistant Support (URAS) Program. The URAS program is intended to target undergraduate students in their first or second year at UMBC (depending on student availability).
