The U.S. Department of State is now accepting applications for the 7th UNESCO Youth Forum. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Youth Forum is a biennial conference that brings together youth from over 80 countries to exchange views and identify shared opportunities to address global problems within UNESCO’s mandate.

This year, the Youth Forum will be in mid-October at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Each National Commission for UNESCO may send up to two candidates to represent youth in their home country. At the Forum, youth delegates will share their experiences and seek ways that UNESCO can use its mandate to promote a better future for mankind. The outcome from the Forum will be forwarded to the UNESCO General Conference for consideration.

Eligibility is limited to U.S. Citizens at least 18 years old and not older than 24 as of October 1, 2011. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply, including those enrolled in community colleges and those not enrolled in academic programs.

The Shriver Center is currently seeking Service-Learning Interns for the 2011-2012 academic year. Interns play a pivotal role in the Service-Learning Program, which places over 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites. The S-L Intern position offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional development, as well as linkages to future leadership positions. The positions open for the 2011-2012 year are open to students from all majors!

The Choice Program's College Night: coordinate mentoring activities to adolescents visiting UMBC on Mondays from 5pm-8:30pm

College Gardens Youth Program: coordinate after-school activities to elementary and middle school aged youth on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 2:15pm-5:45pm

Education Based Latino Outreach (EBLO): provide academic and literacy support to Latino youth on Saturdays from 9am-1:45pm

MS Swim: provide one-on-one aquatic therapy support for adults who have Multiple Sclerosis at the Catonsville Y on Fridays/Sundays from 1pm-4pm

Refugee Youth Project at Patterson Park High School: provide tutoring and mentoring support to adolescent refugees on Wednesdays from 2:40pm-6:30pm

Responsibilities:
The part-time (30 hr/wk) General Assistant will be hired to work with the EFNEP Summer Youth Nutrition Program in Montgomery County. The General Assistant will implement nutrition lessons, cooking demonstrations and physical activity games to youth (6-13 years) who attend summer enrichment camps at recreation centers, community centers and faith-based organizations.

• Attend and participate in scheduled training sessions (prior to the summer program start date) to learn about the activities that will be implemented and to prepare materials/supplies for the program.
• In a team-teaching module, facilitate nutrition lessons focused on healthy cooking to groups of children 6-13 years of age at various sites for five consecutive weeks. The summer youth nutrition program will begin June 27th and will end August 9th, 2011.
• Collects and analyzes evaluation (pre/post-test) data for each summer camp site and submits the information to the supervisor during the last week of the program.

Qualifications:
• Education: Two years of college preferred.
• Teaching experience working with children 6-13 years of age who come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to learn and present basic nutrition information and physical activity lessons to youth.
• Skills in performing basic arithmetic calculations.
• Skills to maintain effective working relationships with team members and community leaders.
• Ability to effectively communicate with youth.
• Ability to lift and transport supplies and equipment.
• Must work well in a team environment and have a flexible schedule.
• Must have an automobile, valid driver’s license, and be willing to travel within Montgomery County. A criminal background check must be completed prior to employment.

Salary:
This is a short-term (summer only) contractual position. Hourly wage is $9.00 per hour. Mileage reimbursement is available.

• The BALTIMORE CARES VISTA positions will divide their time between the Office of the Mayor-City of Baltimore, a community-based program, and UMBC's Service-Learning Program in this new collaboration. The VISTAs will develop and implement an interdisciplinary service-learning curriculum focused on the problem of vacant lots and drug addiction in the city. Multiple VISTA positions available.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
• The VISTA member will receive health insurance, a travel allowance (for work-related meetings and events), and a taxable living allowance of approximately $11,200 for the year of full-time service.

• After successfully completing the service year, the VISTA will be eligible to receive either $1,200 in cash or an AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,350 that can be used toward the repayment of student loans or school tuition.

The Links, Incorporated (http://www.linksinc.org/) founded in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The Links members are newsmakers, role models, mentors, activists and volunteers who work toward the realization of making the name “Links” not only a chain of friendship, but also a chain of purposeful service.

The Links, Inc. will award one $3500 scholarship to a deserving UMBC student for the 2011-2012 academic year in recognition of the accomplishments and contributions of Jacqueline C. Hrabowski.

Selection Criteria
The scholarship recipient will be recognized based upon her/his commitment to improving the lives of at-risk urban youth through academic studies and community service activities.
• Candidate should be a full-time, degree-seeking student at UMBC, enrolled in her/his junior or senior year during the 2011-2012 academic year with a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

On March 23, 2010 President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This legislation marks a watershed moment in U.S. health care policy. By 2019, the numbers of uninsured will be reduced by approximately 30 million as a result of Medicaid expansion and a set of subsidies, penalties, and regulatory reforms intended to increase take up of individual insurance. These policies will bring the promise of financial access to health care to lower-income Americans but will increase the urgency of delivery system reforms to ensure meaningful access to high-quality care and affordability in the long run. The Maryland League of Conservation Voters is the political voice of the environmental community in Maryland advocating for sound conservation policies, promoting pro-environment candidates and holding elected officials and appointed leaders accountable for protecting and restoring the environment. The Maryland League of Conservation Voters Education Fund works to maximize the participation of conservation minded voters in public policy decisions made at the state levels regarding Maryland’s environment and natural resources.

The Urban Institute Academy for Public Policy Analysis and Research is a unique and challenging program of skills-building, career development, and mentoring for minority undergraduates interested in careers in public policy research.

Description
The year-long fellowship begins with an intensive nine-week summer program. The summer portion of our program gives students between their junior and senior year of college the skills and exposure crucial to obtaining highly competitive entry positions in the field. After students successfully complete the summer program, we follow up with continued mentoring, a research conference presentation at APPAM, job and graduate school counseling, and research paper publication during their final year of college.

Program Mission
While minorities and persons from distressed communities are often the subject of social programs and policies, they are greatly underrepresented in the field of public policy research. Adding the voices and perspectives of researchers from diverse backgrounds will make a valuable contribution to the field.

Approach
The unique multi-pronged approach of The Urban Institute Academy will provide our students with:

* Guided research projects
* Career skills development

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland’s most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland’s integrated transportation system. Interns can gain experience in policy development, marketing, international relations, computer networking, engineering, planning and financing, public relations, and neighborhood conservation. Placement opportunities are available at the MD Aviation Administration, MD Port Administration, MD Transit Administration, Motor Vehicle Administration, MD State Highway Administration, MD Transportation Authority, or The Secretary’s Office.

Participating student earn $3,500 during 8 weeks this summer (June 6th to July 29th) and $10.00 per hour in a part-time internship during the fall, winter or spring semester.

Qualifications:
The program is open to all students entering their senior year or who have completed 90 credits by fall 2011 with a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

The mission of the Refugee Youth Project (RYP) is to facilitate a program committed to tutoring and mentoring the adolescent refugee population in Baltimore. This is an opportunity for the UMBC community to aid in the assimilation of one of the under represented youth groups in Baltimore City and further promote their education while providing a significant window of opportunity that these students would not other wise have access to.

The Shriver Center encourages volunteers to sign up by February 18th so that they may be available to attend one of the two available mandatory training sessions. The first is on Wednesday, February 16th at John’s Hopkins University and the second is right here on UMBC’s campus on February 21st from 3-6 pm.

The Adult Literacy Program is a program at The Learning Bank that provides one-on-one tutoring to adults in a broad range of subjects, ranging from literacy skill development to math skill building, and GED preparation.

The Shriver Center's Service-Learning program is offering a great opportunity for students to get involved with the Adult Literacy Program this spring: Sign up as a Volunteer on Thursdays from 5:00pm-8:30pm.

The Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship is a ten week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency. Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in the nonprofit sector to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending Maryland institutions. Participating interns work for ten weeks full-time from June6th to August 12th while participating in bi-weekly seminars in nonprofit management. Each participating student receives a $3,000 stipend.

INTERNSHIP BENEFITS
College and university undergraduate and graduate students from various majors are provided with an opportunity to build valuable skills, explore career choices within the nonprofit sector and gain experience managing and leading public service organizations. In doing so, the Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program makes an important contribution to the development of the state’s current and future workforce and citizenry.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
• Eligible applicants must be graduate or undergraduate students attending a two- or four- year college or university in Maryland with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. In addition, all undergraduate applicants must be entering their junior or senior year during the Fall 2011 semester.
• Candidates must intern full-time for 10 weeks from June 6 to August 12, 2011.
• Interns must be willing to travel to the Baltimore area as necessary during the ten weeks of the program to attend four to five professional development seminars conducted by the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
• Special consideration for admittance into the program will be given to applicants who have secured a summer internship in a Maryland non-profit at the time of application. However, assistance will be given to students without a placement once they are admitted into the Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program.

The Refugee Youth Project (RYP) is an after school and mentoring program that seeks to improve the lives of Baltimore's youngest refugees by supporting their academic needs and making their acculturation simple and meaningful. The Shriver Center's Service-Learning program is offering TWO opportunities for students to get involved with RYP this spring:

- Sign up as a Volunteer with RYP on Wednesdays from 2:30pm-6pm. Transportation is provided for students who enroll through the Service-Learning program.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Residential Life Graphic Design & Marketing Intern will spearhead video/visual marketing of Residential Life initiatives for paraprofessional staff, campus residents, videos for monthly E-Loop, viral video projects and will assist with Spring Virtual Tour project. Will be involved with Residential Life Marketing and Communications team to create solutions that are current with trends. Intern will use his/her knowledge and expertise from their academic discipline as well as his/her interpersonal experiences with students on campus to help reach Residential Life and institutional goals for future initiatives (i.e. Recycling/Sustainability issues, Alcohol Awareness, Fire Safety, Safety on campus, connectivity within residential community etc.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Must be a current residential undergraduate or graduate student. Must be able to work well within a team. Must be interested in residential community education and outreach. Must have excellent creativity and “outside the box” thinking. Must be able to work well with simple audio/visual equipment and be familiar with MS Office, Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Photoshop and other audio/visual suites.

SALARY: Student will work approximately 7.5 hours per week (about 120 hours per semester) to receive academic credit in conjunction with the Shriver Center as a site placement for the Spring semester.

The Maryland State Archives awards paid part-time archival internships to individuals who are interested in history and considering a career in archival science. Interns will participate in a variety of projects under the direction of professional archival staff. Students will gain career-relevant experience in an archives setting and contribute in making historical records more accessible to the public. The internship pays $10.63 to $11.25 per hour, based on the level of education. Housing, benefits, and transportation are not provided. Internships are located at the Baltimore City Archives, a municipal repository currently administered under the auspices of the Maryland State Archives. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Collection Processing and Description Project
This internship, as a collection processor, requires knowledge of the basic principles of archival arrangement, description, preservation and re-housing techniques. The individual also enters descriptive information into an online database. Candidates with a background in music history or music performance are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
A part-time commitment of 16-32 hours per week is required. Workdays begin at 7:00AM and end at 3:30PM. There are no weekend or evening hours. BORN is an after school program based in East Baltimore and was created by Baltimore Raven Domonique Foxworth for the young men in Baltimore who have the talent and potential to succeed, but lack the opportunities to do so due to various social obstacles and the appeal of the street. The 5th and 6th graders at BORN struggle with their math and reading skills and need help in the form of tutoring. We are currently seeking university students who like working with young kids to tutor and help the boys succeed.

Position Description: This position would require the tutor to assist the students with their math and Reading assignments from school there by enhancing their Math and Reading skills. The tutor would work with one or two boys at a time. The over all aim is to improve academic achievement of the boy's so that they will successfully transition from one grade level to the next with ease.

Responsibilities:
• Complete 3-5 hours of tutoring a week
• Maintain a Math/Reading log of each student tutored so as to track progress and identify areas of learning that need attention.
• Work patiently with students to ensure they understand concepts being taught.
• Report to Program Managers after tutoring session to discuss observations/input/progress made.

Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a university.
• Successful completion of at least a basic university level Math and English course.

Hours: We are willing to work with your schedule. Tutoring will take place anytime between 2:30pm-5:00 Monday-Friday. Tutors can choose what days they would like to come in. A minimum of one hour is expected each time you come in.

Volunteer to help tutor adolescents and adults who are working to obtain their GED or other educational goals. Tutors are needed to assist with basic literacy support (reading/writing) and problem-solving/critical thinking components (math).

Transportation is provided on Tuesday mornings from 9:30am-12:30pm and Thursday evenings from 5pm-8:30pm. If you are interested in volunteering on these days, please call The Shriver Center at 410.455.2493 to set up a time to register. If you want to volunteer, but not on these days, let us know – other volunteer times are available!

This Fall semester, The Shriver Center will be providing transportation to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) on Saturdays from 10am-1pm. Volunteers will assist the animals at the shelter by providing general care and physical activity for animals housed at the shelter.

All students who participate in BARCS and utilize the Shriver Van for transportation to the site will be enrolled in the 096 Practicum, which enables students to receive a transcript notation that recognizes their participation in university-sanctioned community service.

The BE MORE Program seeks to bridge racial, religious, and socioeconomic divides in and around Baltimore by bringing together different groups for interactive activities and discussions, called "twinnings." For this coming year, BE MORE will be working with the Park School (a private school) and Gardenville Elementary school (a public school) and bringing together these students once a month for interactive sport activities, followed by cross-cultural dialogue. By volunteering just a few hours a month, you can help to shape these experiences!

Volunteers are needed to facilitate the activities and discussion groups, and will be provided with training in late September to prepare them for the events. The dates for the upcoming twinning sessions between schools are:

The NAACP Education Department, a division of the Programs Department, seeks a research intern for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters to work on projects addressing school discipline policies, core standards implementation, and planning our biannual Daisy Bates Education Summit.

The Shriver Center has 2 Service-Learning Intern positions open for the Fall 2010 semester. Interns play a pivotal role in The Shriver Center's Service-Learning Program, which places nearly 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites.

Open positions:
• Project Team Service-Learning Intern – Provide activities for children that help them develop their team building and social skills in this after school program, which takes place at the Baltimore City Boys and Girls Club in Franklin Square on Mondays and the Glen Burnie Boys and Girls Club on Wednesdays. The Intern drives the group to the sites and leads the activities on Mondays (in Baltimore city) and Wednesdays (in Glen Burnie) from 4-7pm.

• College Night Mentoring Program Service-Learning Intern – Assist adolescent participants of The Choice Program with academics and development of positive social skills. Intern coordinates educational and recreational activities for the program on Mondays from 5pm-8:15pm.

Benefits:
Each S-L Intern receives a $300-750 stipend for the semester, and a Service-Learning Leadership notation on their transcript with their enrollment in the 096 Practicum.

Objective: The objective of the Student Career Experience Program is to identify promising individuals for a direct career path to the special agent position within Criminal Investigation (CI). Interns play a pivotal role in The Shriver Center's Service-Learning Program, which places nearly 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites.

Open positions:
• College Gardens Youth Program Service-Learning Intern #1 – Tutor children in academics and coordinate educational, artistic, and recreational activities for this after school program. The Intern drives the group to the site and leads the activities on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:15pm-5:45p.m.

• College Gardens Youth Program Service-Learning Intern #2 – Tutor children in academics and coordinate educational, artistic, and recreational activities for this after school program. The Intern drives the group to the site and leads the activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15pm-5:45p.m.

• College Night Mentoring Program Service-Learning Intern – Assist adolescent participants of The Choice Program with academics and development of positive social skills. Intern coordinates educational and recreational activities for the program on Mondays from 5pm-8:15pm.

• Adult Literacy Program Service-Learning Intern – Provide one-on-one tutoring to adults in a broad range of subjects, ranging from literacy skill development to math skill building, and GED preparation. Intern drives the group to the site on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-8:30pm. Please note: If you are interested in this position, but not available on Tuesdays/Thursdays, please indicate your interest on the application and the evenings when you would be available to visit the site from 5-8:30pm during the week.

Benefits:
Each S-L Intern receives a $300-750 stipend for the semester, and a Service-Learning Leadership notation on their transcript with their enrollment in the 096 Practicum.

MARYLAND SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Maryland Space Grant Consortium was established in 1989 under NASA's National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. One of the goals of the Maryland Space Grant Consortium is to offer financial support to Maryland residents or graduates of Maryland high schools who are undergraduate students in attendance at an affiliate institution who otherwise might not be able to attend college and who wish to pursue a career in math, science, engineering, technology, or a space related field. Awards vary and must be used for educational expenses (tuition, books, fees and room and board).

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
• Maryland resident or graduate of a Maryland high school AND U. S. Citizenship
• Aspirations to apply your discipline to the aeronautics community (i.e. English major who wants to write about space for a scientific periodical or pre-med student who wishes to understand health in space)
• Full-time student majoring in (but are not necessarily limited to): the biological and life sciences, chemistry, geological sciences, physics and astronomy, engineering and computer science.
• Awards are for one year, but are renewable upon maintaining a 3.0 G.P.A.
• Community service
o For UMBC students, a required component of this award will be to volunteer at the Maryland FIRST Lego League (FLL) Championship, which is hosted on campus
• Annual commitments include:
o Meeting in the Baltimore area with Maryland Space Grant Consortium staff and scholars from other partner institutions
o Brief report to NASA (this will be explained in greater detail to you at the annual meeting), while at UMBC and for the first several years after graduation

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland’s most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland’s integrated transportation system. The Governor’s Summer Internship Program introduces college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within MD State Government. For 10 weeks beginning June 7th, interns

During a ten week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency, Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback. At the conclusion of the summer, Fellows will give presentations to the Mayor and various cabinet officials summarizing their placements and overall summer experience. The ultimate objective of the fellowship is to encourage talented individuals, with an interest in public service, to seek permanent positions within City government at the conclusion of their academic program.

Mayoral Fellows receive stipends and are placed in agencies based on their background, interests and the needs of the agencies and departments.

Participate in the Walter Sondheim Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program

The Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in the nonprofit sector to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending Maryland institutions. NASA is looking for a communications student with a strong interest in Web publishing and multimedia for their newsroom to help tell NASA Science stories. Register to take ENGL 386 Adult Literacy Tutoring: Theory and Practice this Spring semester, and satisfy an AH requirement, too!

In this course, students will discuss theories of language and literacy acquisition pertaining to adult learners. They will then apply these theories in actual tutoring experiences. In addition, students will read and respond in writing to contemporary research concerning the social, political, and economic causes of illiteracy as well as suggested ways to ameliorate illiteracy on the social and individual levels. Authors whose work students may read include Paulo Freire, John Dewey, W.E.B. DuBois, Mike Rose, Glenda Hull, and Denny Taylor.

Service-Learning Component: This is a Service-Learning course and requires that students spend four hours per week serving as tutors to adult literacy learners in a Baltimore City community center. Students will be eligible to receive a transcript notation that recognizes this participation in university-sanctioned community service.

Note: This course is also listed as EDUC 386. Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of “C” or better; Shriver Center permission required for course. Cross-listed with ENGL 692. (AH).

The Shriver Center has 4 Service-Learning Intern positions open for the Spring 2010 semester. Interns play a pivotal role in The Shriver Center's Service-Learning Program, which places close to 600 UMBC students each year at service sites. Service-Learning Interns are student leaders who aspire to take on a more challenging role to lead various service sites. Open positions include:

• College Gardens Youth Program – Tutor children in academics and provide assistance for artistic, physical, and other recreational activities. Intern leads the group on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15pm-5:45p.m.
• Project Team – Work with youth to stress teamwork and unity through fun and creative group activities. Intern leads the group on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm- 7pm.
• College Night Mentoring Program – Assist participants of The Choice Program with academics and developing positive social skills. Intern co-leads the group on Mondays from 5p.m.-8:15p.m.
• MS-Swim – Assist with water-based physical activity and various social opportunities. Intern leads the group on Fridays and Sundays from 1pm-4pm.

Each S-L Intern position receives a $500-750 stipend for the semester, depending on the service site.

Exciting Intern Opportunity for two students! Potential majors include economics, financial economics, BTA, political science, sociology, HAPP, history, etc....

The student would be working in the Office of Government Relations (OGR) in the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). OGR serves as the legislative liaison between DBM and the Maryland General Assembly and is responsible for coordinating the DBM's legislative activity. DBM is responsible for preparing and overseeing the progress of the budget through the budget committees, but also has a number of operational programs that are often affected by legislation introduced by members of the Maryland General Assembly. Therefore, the
selected intern would be working with program issues involving State personnel, the State Employees and Retirees Health Insurance Program (and health insurance legislation in general), State procurement, and information technology. In addition, the Office of Government Relations works very closely with the Governor's Legislative Office and all of the other State agencies to identify, follow and direct the position on legislation that has a cost or revenue impact on the State general fund and legislation that with fiscal policy issues.

Duties: The intern will respond to legislative requests for information, attend bill hearings and work with committee staff and lobbyists. The Internal Revenue Service is recruiting undergraduate students of all majors for a paid 15-week long Spring 2010 internship! Accepted participants receive scholarships covering the costs of The Washington Center’s Academic Program in addition to providing furnished housing facilities during the internship. Interns will also be provided with living stipends.

Qualifications:
· United States citizenship;
· Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program of any major with a GPA of 3.5 or above;

The Conference and Tourism unit in Baltimore County's Department of Economic Development is a newly created team working to create the product and marketing strategy to increase business and leisure travel and tourism in Baltimore County.

The Conference and Tourism unit is searching for a school year intern that could extend into the summer. This is an exciting opportunity for students interested in working for a start-up organization in the public sector. The student will gain valuable experience in market research, customer service, public administration, tourism and hospitality, communications, and promotions.

The intern will serve as a part-time (10-20 hours) contractual volunteer working with the Conference and Tourism Director, while contributing to the units new strategy.

Responsibilities vary, but may include staffing the front desk of the Visitor

As an intern, you would be asked to work in Annapolis at least two days each week during the 13-week legislative session. Work schedule is flexible based on number of days the student is available. The type of work assigned to interns is mainly legislative, although some duties are clerical in nature. Legislative responsibilities may include:Conducting research; Drafting correspondence; Preparing, recording, and reporting testimony; Contacting witnesses; Attending committee hearings; Tracking bills; Working on mailings; Responding to constituent’s inquiries; and Writing newsletters.

Each intern is awarded a stipend to help defray the costs of participating in the program. The total session stipend varies, depending on the number of days per week the intern works in Annapolis. To be eligible for the program, a student must be able to work a minimum of two full days each week of session. $600 per session = 2 days per week; $700 per session = 2.5 to 3 days per week, & $1000 per session = 4 to 5 days per week

The mission of the Department of Commerce (DOC) Office of the Secretary Fall Internship Program is to engage and empower developing leaders with a passion for public service. The program will expose students to opportunities in the Federal Government and the potential to find passion in a career in public service.

Interns will gain unique experience though their placement in one of several DOC offices.
The students will work closely with the Special/Confidential Assistants in their respective offices. This will keep them engaged in the political process, maintain strong lines of communication and clearly define roles and responsibilities. On a biweekly/
monthly basis, the Internship Board will coordinate visits to local exhibits including the National Archives, lectures, arrange photo/meet‐and‐greet with Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, White House Tours, etc.

Each applicant will be evaluated on three basic qualities: a commitment to public service, demonstration of leadership in the community and dedication to the mission of this Administration. The applicant's communication, writing and office skills will also be reviewed and considered. An applicant's GPA is not figured into the final score, and each application is reviewed on a semi-blind basis.

PROGRAM
This select group of young men and women from across the country dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community, and the nation. These committed citizens become a part of the White House team. The assignments given to an intern on any given day could include conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, and writing memos.

While the interns’ individual responsibilities and tasks vary, they are united through weekly events and, most importantly, through service. Interns participate in a long-term service project to help the surrounding community. This is a great opportunity to promote leadership and a way to learn about their fellow intern class. Each week, interns come together for a speaker series with senior staff members and participate in off-site field trips around D.C. In addition, during the summer a few interns are chosen as mentors for the D.C. Scholars.

Opportunity:

The Maryland Department of Transportation Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland's most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland's integrated transportation system. HACU National Internship Program program recruits college students for paid summer and semester-long internships at federal agencies and private corporations in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country. These ten and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a myriad of careers in the federal and corporate sectors.

To date, HNIP has helped over 7,000 students find internships that closely relate to their majors or career goals. Though we started in 1992 with only 24 interns working at one participating federal agency, we have expanded our program each year. The Governor's Summer Internship Program was created to introduce college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within Maryland State Government. For 10 weeks, beginning June 1st, GSIP Interns will:

* Work on substantive projects with senior-level public administrators and policy makers, in departments or policy areas that closely correspond with each intern's field of study or career interests. Duties often include attending meetings, drafting correspondence, tracking legislation, and researching policy options.
* Develop policy papers that address significant issues facing Maryland today. These papers, researched in teams, are presented to the Governor and/or other senior staff members at the end of the program.
* Attend site visits and seminars designed to introduce interns to specific rewards and challenges of public administration.

United Way of Central Maryland seeks an undergraduate student interested in being exposed to several aspects of macro level community social/human services work. Placement has flexible hours and the student will primarily work out of the United Way of Central Maryland's (UWCM) downtown office. The Impact Strategies Division (ISD) works within the United Way of Central Maryland to ensure our resources and focus make an impact in four distinct areas: 1) Basic Needs (focus on affordable housing); 2) Family Safety; 3) Youth Achieving Potential; and 4) School Readiness. This internship will expose the student to learn about all four impact areas. The individual should have a strong interest in research and evaluation. Myth: The downturn in the economy means that no internships are available.

The Choice Program is seeking an energetic and committed college student to fill the position of Youth Employment Training Coordinator. The duties are outlined below. This is a paid internships and it is a time commitment of approximately 10 hours per week (Tuesdays 3-7 pm, Saturdays 11 am – 1 pm and 2 – 4 pm are mandatory, the other hours are flexible). BRIDGE (Building Resiliency and Independence through Developing Gainful Employment) Project, a partnership between the Choice Program and Baltimore County Public Libraries, is a mentoring and training program for youth age fourteen to eighteen in need of supportive employment services. As part of the support offered by the program, youth from the Baltimore area attend an eight week employment preparation training at Essex, North point and Lansdowne Public Libraries. The youth are engaged for two hours each night comprised of short lectures, interactive activities, and volunteer engagement.

They have numerous projects that would provide outstanding learning opportunities and hands-on experience. Such projects may include the production of six-eight video vignettes per semester, featuring our student athletes and being available on www.umbcretrievers.com and UMBC's you tube, production on a thirty-minute coaches program, which would air on WVIE (AM 1370) radio and be streamed live on www.umbcretrievers.tv and other pieces to air on nearly 50 radio and video streamed UMBC athletic events.
