This fast-paced, eight-week residential program provides students from around the world with the opportunities to gain an edge in today's competitive job market and graduate school admissions, and experience the excitement of Washington first-hand.

Register to take ENGL 386 Adult Literacy Tutoring: Theory and Practice this Spring semester!

In this course, students will discuss theories of language and literacy acquisition pertaining to adult learners. They will then apply these theories in actual tutoring experiences. In addition, students will read and respond in writing to contemporary research concerning the social, political, and economic causes of illiteracy as well as suggested ways to ameliorate illiteracy on the social and individual levels. Authors whose work students may read include Paulo Freire, John Dewey, W.E.B. DuBois, Mike Rose, Glenda Hull, and Denny Taylor.

Service-Learning Component: This is a Service-Learning course and requires that students spend four hours per week serving as tutors to adult literacy learners in a Baltimore City community center. Students will be eligible to receive a transcript notation that recognizes this participation in university-sanctioned community service.

Note: This course is also listed as EDUC 386. Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of “C” or better; Shriver Center permission required for course. Cross-listed with ENGL 692. (AH).

The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group’s production department is looking for an intern. The Conference and Tourism unit in Baltimore County's Department of Economic Development is a newly created team working to create the product and marketing strategy to increase business and leisure travel and tourism in Baltimore County.

The Conference and Tourism unit is searching for a school year intern that could extend into the summer. This is an exciting opportunity for students interested in working for a start-up organization in the public sector. The student will gain valuable experience in market research, customer service, public administration, tourism and hospitality, communications, and promotions.

The intern will serve as a part-time (10-20 hours) contractual volunteer working with the Conference and Tourism Director, while contributing to the units new strategy.

Responsibilities vary, but may include staffing the front desk of the Visitor
Center, researching and creating a database of the tourism products in Baltimore County, inputting and analyzing primary and secondary data, writing original content for promotional pieces, e-newsletters, the web, and memos, and assisting on special projects.

As an intern, you would be asked to work in Annapolis at least two days each week during the 13-week legislative session. Work schedule is flexible based on number of days the student is available. The type of work assigned to interns is mainly legislative, although some duties are clerical in nature. Legislative responsibilities may include:Conducting research; Drafting correspondence; Preparing, recording, and reporting testimony; Contacting witnesses; Attending committee hearings; Tracking bills; Working on mailings; Responding to constituent’s inquiries; and Writing newsletters.

Each intern is awarded a stipend to help defray the costs of participating in the program. The total session stipend varies, depending on the number of days per week the intern works in Annapolis. To be eligible for the program, a student must be able to work a minimum of two full days each week of session. $600 per session = 2 days per week; $700 per session = 2.5 to 3 days per week, & $1000 per session = 4 to 5 days per week

The mission of the Department of Commerce (DOC) Office of the Secretary Fall Internship Program is to engage and empower developing leaders with a passion for public service. The program will expose students to opportunities in the Federal Government and the potential to find passion in a career in public service.

Interns will gain unique experience though their placement in one of several DOC offices.
The students will work closely with the Special/Confidential Assistants in their respective offices. This will keep them engaged in the political process, maintain strong lines of communication and clearly define roles and responsibilities. On a biweekly/
monthly basis, the Internship Board will coordinate visits to local exhibits including the National Archives, lectures, arrange photo/meet‐and‐greet with Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, White House Tours, etc.

Applications are due September 20, 2009. The application includes two essays, three letters of recommendation and a resume. Each applicant will be evaluated on three basic qualities: a commitment to public service, demonstration of leadership in the community and dedication to the mission of this Administration. The applicant's communication, writing and office skills will also be reviewed and considered. An applicant's GPA is not figured into the final score, and each application is reviewed on a semi-blind basis.

PROGRAM
This select group of young men and women from across the country dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community, and the nation. These committed citizens become a part of the White House team. The assignments given to an intern on any given day could include conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, and writing memos.

While the interns’ individual responsibilities and tasks vary, they are united through weekly events and, most importantly, through service. Interns participate in a long-term service project to help the surrounding community. This is a great opportunity to promote leadership and a way to learn about their fellow intern class. Each week, interns come together for a speaker series with senior staff members and participate in off-site field trips around D.C. In addition, during the summer a few interns are chosen as mentors for the D.C. Scholars.

Opportunity:

The Maryland Department of Transportation Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland's most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland's integrated transportation system. HACU National Internship Program program recruits college students for paid summer and semester-long internships at federal agencies and private corporations in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country. These ten and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a myriad of careers in the federal and corporate sectors.

To date, HNIP has helped over 7,000 students find internships that closely relate to their majors or career goals. Though we started in 1992 with only 24 interns working at one participating federal agency, we have expanded our program each year. The Governor's Summer Internship Program was created to introduce college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within Maryland State Government. For 10 weeks, beginning June 1st, GSIP Interns will:

* Work on substantive projects with senior-level public administrators and policy makers, in departments or policy areas that closely correspond with each intern's field of study or career interests. Duties often include attending meetings, drafting correspondence, tracking legislation, and researching policy options.
* Develop policy papers that address significant issues facing Maryland today. These papers, researched in teams, are presented to the Governor and/or other senior staff members at the end of the program.
* Attend site visits and seminars designed to introduce interns to specific rewards and challenges of public administration.

United Way of Central Maryland seeks an undergraduate student interested in being exposed to several aspects of macro level community social/human services work. Placement has flexible hours and the student will primarily work out of the United Way of Central Maryland's (UWCM) downtown office. The Impact Strategies Division (ISD) works within the United Way of Central Maryland to ensure our resources and focus make an impact in four distinct areas: 1) Basic Needs (focus on affordable housing); 2) Family Safety; 3) Youth Achieving Potential; and 4) School Readiness. The Choice Program is seeking an energetic and committed college student to fill the position of Youth Employment Training Coordinator. The duties are outlined below. This is a paid internships and it is a time commitment of approximately 10 hours per week (Tuesdays 3-7 pm, Saturdays 11 am – 1 pm and 2 – 4 pm are mandatory, the other hours are flexible). BRIDGE (Building Resiliency and Independence through Developing Gainful Employment) Project, a partnership between the Choice Program and Baltimore County Public Libraries, is a mentoring and training program for youth age fourteen to eighteen in need of supportive employment services. As part of the support offered by the program, youth from the Baltimore area attend an eight week employment preparation training at Essex, North point and Lansdowne Public Libraries. The youth are engaged for two hours each night comprised of short lectures, interactive activities, and volunteer engagement.

UMBC Athletics would like to offer an ongoing internshi for a student interested in videography, video production, content production, etc. in an athletic environment. They have numerous projects that would provide outstanding learning opportunities and hands-on experience. Such projects may include the production of six-eight video vignettes per semester, featuring our student athletes and being available on www.umbcretrievers.com and UMBC's you tube, production on a thirty-minute coaches program, which would air on WVIE (AM 1370) radio and be streamed live on www.umbcretrievers.tv and other pieces to air on nearly 50 radio and video streamed UMBC athletic events.
