The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) is a ten week summer research opportunity for undergraduate Juniors & Seniors, and Graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory (list of participating universities is available at http://www.asee.org/nreip). We are conducting two research studies to examine quality of life in colorectal cancer patients, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The aims of these studies are twofold. Study 1 is a larger, prospective study investigating quality of life in colorectal cancer patients along the cancer trajectory (i.e., from diagnosis through survivorship) in colorectal cancer patients. Using Study 1 as a primary method of identifying patients with sexual and intimacy-related concerns, Study 2 is a controlled trial of a 4-session skills-based telephone intervention designed to address such concerns for couples facing colorectal cancer.

The mission of the Department of Commerce (DOC) Office of the Secretary Fall Internship Program is to engage and empower developing leaders with a passion for public service. The program will expose students to opportunities in the Federal Government and the potential to find passion in a career in public service.

Interns will gain unique experience though their placement in one of several DOC offices.
The students will work closely with the Special/Confidential Assistants in their respective offices. This will keep them engaged in the political process, maintain strong lines of communication and clearly define roles and responsibilities. On a biweekly/
monthly basis, the Internship Board will coordinate visits to local exhibits including the National Archives, lectures, arrange photo/meet‐and‐greet with Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, White House Tours, etc.

Applications for the 2010 Spring White House Internship are now available at whitehouse.gov/about/internships.

Applications are due September 20, 2009. The application includes two essays, three letters of recommendation and a resume. Each applicant will be evaluated on three basic qualities: a commitment to public service, demonstration of leadership in the community and dedication to the mission of this Administration. The applicant's communication, writing and office skills will also be reviewed and considered. An applicant's GPA is not figured into the final score, and each application is reviewed on a semi-blind basis.

PROGRAM
This select group of young men and women from across the country dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community, and the nation. These committed citizens become a part of the White House team. The assignments given to an intern on any given day could include conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, and writing memos.

While the interns’ individual responsibilities and tasks vary, they are united through weekly events and, most importantly, through service. Interns participate in a long-term service project to help the surrounding community. This is a great opportunity to promote leadership and a way to learn about their fellow intern class. Each week, interns come together for a speaker series with senior staff members and participate in off-site field trips around D.C. In addition, during the summer a few interns are chosen as mentors for the D.C. Scholars.

The Research trainee position is an exciting opportunity to learn more about developmental disabilities through involvement in our clinical research team. The CARD Research Volunteer will be principally responsible for assisting with duties related to the CARD clinical registry and a multi-site study designed to enhance the care of individuals with autism, the Autism Treatment Network. These projects will provide the CARD volunteer with exposure to interdisciplinary research and practice, through observation and hands on experience, in an outpatient pediatric setting providing a full spectrum of care.

TOPS at University of MD, School of Medicine seeks HEALTH EDUCATOR/RESEARCH INTERNS

This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Division of Growth and Nutrition within the Department of Pediatrics under the guidance of Dr. Maureen Black. We are seeking interns to assist health educators for TOPS, a toddler overweight prevention study. The project focuses on the dietary, physical activity, and growth patterns of toddlers.

The health educator assistants will be responsible for helping facilitate parent groups on topics pertaining to nutrition, physical activity, parenting skills, and child safety. Other responsibilities may include attending weekly meetings, contacting participants via the phone, transporting class materials, classroom set up, scheduling meeting times, data entry, filing, and other office duties. In addition, this person will have the opportunity to work in conjunction with an interdisciplinary team of faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. This is a 10-hour per week position.

"A Celebration of Student Research"

The 20th Annual Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium will be held on Friday, April 17, 2008, at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Undergraduate and Graduate students in the areas of math, computer science, engineering, natural and the social sciences are invited to present their research in poster form during one of two sessions that evening. Previous symposia have featured students from colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and New York, with some coming from as far away as Minnesota, Texas, and Oklahoma.

This year's keynote speaker will be Sheila Patek, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Integrative Biology, University of California, Berkeley. Her talk is entitled "Airborne ants and smashing shrimp: accident and intent in the evolution of movement" and will be given at 5:00 pm in the Wolfington Teletorium of Mandeville Hall on the Saint Joseph's University campus. This talk is free and open to the public.
Abstracts are due by Thursday, March 26th. The registration fee is $25 and the fee to attend the banquet that evening at SJU is an additional $15. Abstracts and all registration materials must be submitted through the website (http://www.sju.edu/srs).
