The Market Edge organization is a center of excellence in the Retail Energy business that provides strategic marketing research and analytics, product, pricing and marketing & communications insights for our partners and customers. For 2011, we have internships in three key areas:
- Marketing
- Web Platform
- Data Research & Analytics.

Interns will be given the opportunity to work on projects and initiatives tied to specific retail energy markets/regions and/or a specific marketing functional area of discipline. Interns will collaborate with select multi-disciplined cross functional teams/organizations throughout the retail organization (including outside partners) to participate in and influence projects throughout the respective market/region.

Each intern will report to a director.

While specific projects will be determined based on the intern’s major and background, some responsibilities are outlined below:

The Web Platform Intern will help in the determining the messaging for the retail customer website. He or she will accomplish this using both push and pull strategies including SEO, PPC, link building (and buying), targeted ad campaigns, community development and more. They will also support in content research and development for content on the web platform.
• Create content for and work with Web Platform Manager to execute online banner, retargeting, and other web-based ad campaigns
• Create content for and work with Web Platform Manager to execute email marketing campaigns and customer communications
• Support community development, through input on the social media strategy

The Marketing Research & Analytics Intern will support analysis and evaluation of existing and new business lines profitability, new opportunities and sales analysis. The intern will also perform key research as assigned.
- Using internal and external data for basic business case modeling.
- Conduct research on energy and related industries, key competitors of CNE and new markets/products associated with new business lines.
- Support in preparing reports (daily, weekly, monthly) and (as applicable) presentations

Graduating Seniors: AmeriCorps Positions in UMBC's Service-Learning!

Apply to become an AmeriCorps VISTA with UMBC’s Service-Learning Program!

AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to serve as full-time volunteers for one year.

WHAT VISTA POSITIONS CAN I APPLY FOR?
Several positions are open and recruiting high-quality applicants!

• The MDCC VISTA will work with UMBC’s Service-Learning Program and two middle school partners in the implementation of 3 key campus-community projects:
o Plan college access visits to campus for local middle school partners
o Coordinate curriculum-based service-learning projects with middle school partners
o Recruit UMBC students to serve as volunteers for service-learning activities

• The BALTIMORE CARES VISTA positions will divide their time between the Office of the Mayor-City of Baltimore, a community-based program, and UMBC's Service-Learning Program in this new collaboration. The VISTAs will develop and implement an interdisciplinary service-learning curriculum focused on the problem of vacant lots and drug addiction in the city. Multiple VISTA positions available.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
• The VISTA member will receive health insurance, a travel allowance (for work-related meetings and events), and a taxable living allowance of approximately $11,200 for the year of full-time service.

• After successfully completing the service year, the VISTA will be eligible to receive either $1,200 in cash or an AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,350 that can be used toward the repayment of student loans or school tuition.

THE JACQUELINE C. HRABOWSKI & LINKS, INC. SCHOLARSHIP

The Links, Incorporated (http://www.linksinc.org/) founded in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The Links members are newsmakers, role models, mentors, activists and volunteers who work toward the realization of making the name “Links” not only a chain of friendship, but also a chain of purposeful service.

The Links, Inc. will award one $3500 scholarship to a deserving UMBC student for the 2011-2012 academic year in recognition of the accomplishments and contributions of Jacqueline C. Hrabowski.

Selection Criteria
The scholarship recipient will be recognized based upon her/his commitment to improving the lives of at-risk urban youth through academic studies and community service activities.
• Candidate should be a full-time, degree-seeking student at UMBC, enrolled in her/his junior or senior year during the 2011-2012 academic year with a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
• The applicant must have provided service to Baltimore City at-risk youth.

Books With A Past is an independent used bookstore in Howard County, about 25-30 minutes from UMBC. We are looking for a student to take our currently very piecemeal website and streamline and improve it, both for ease of use and for appearances' sake. Participate in the Governor's Summer Internship Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program introduces college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within MD State Government. For 10 weeks (June 6 – August 12, 2011), interns:
• Work in state government agencies on substantive tasks, including drafting speeches and correspondence, tracking legislation, attending hearings, assisting with constituent case work, and researching policy options
• Participate in seminars with top Maryland officials and make site visits to State facilities
• Develop policy papers on a significant issue facing Maryland (e.g. the Chesapeake Bay, crime, care for the elderly) and present their findings in person to the Governor

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be:
• Undergraduates attending a two- or a four-year college or university in Maryland, or Maryland residents attending an out-of-state college or university.
• Entering their junior or senior year during the Fall 2011 semester, with a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
All majors are strongly encouraged to apply.

UMBC ResLife Graphic Design & Marketing Internship

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Residential Life Graphic Design & Marketing Intern will spearhead video/visual marketing of Residential Life initiatives for paraprofessional staff, campus residents, videos for monthly E-Loop, viral video projects and will assist with Spring Virtual Tour project. Specific tasks include video/sound editing, graphic design, facilitating communication between stakeholders for idea collaboration, recruiting student actors for specific projects, scheduling students for video filming, assisting with script preparation (if applicable), assisting with film shoots, assisting other offices with outreach to residential students as needed, and taking pictures for Residential Life as needed. Will be involved with Residential Life Marketing and Communications team to create solutions that are current with trends. Will assist with student focus groups and other market research to understand what UMBC students will respond to at this point in our history. Will provide a point-person for myUMBC Groups launch. Intern will use his/her knowledge and expertise from their academic discipline as well as his/her interpersonal experiences with students on campus to help reach Residential Life and institutional goals for future initiatives (i.e. Recycling/Sustainability issues, Alcohol Awareness, Fire Safety, Safety on campus, connectivity within residential community etc.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Must be a current residential undergraduate or graduate student. Must be able to work well within a team. Must be interested in residential community education and outreach. Must have excellent creativity and “outside the box” thinking. Must be able to work well with simple audio/visual equipment and be familiar with MS Office, Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Photoshop and other audio/visual suites.

SALARY: Student will work approximately 7.5 hours per week (about 120 hours per semester) to receive academic credit in conjunction with the Shriver Center as a site placement for the Spring semester.

The Nature Conservancy Diversity Summer Internship Program

Technology: Working in an Agile environment, interns may have the opportunity to be involved in the development or testing process.

Participate in the Walter Sondheim Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program

The Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in the nonprofit sector to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending Maryland institutions. Participating interns work for ten weeks full-time from June 1st to August 6th while participating in bi-weekly seminars in nonprofit management. Each participating student receives a $3,000 scholarship.

College and university undergraduate and graduate students from various majors are provided with an opportunity to build valuable skills, gain experience in managing and leading public service organizations, and explore career choices within this sector. In doing so, the Public Service Summer Internship Program makes an important contribution to the development of the state’s current and future workforce and citizenry.

Qualifications: Eligible applicants must be graduate or undergraduate with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. In addition, all undergraduate applicants must be entering their junior or senior year during the Fall 2010 semester. All majors are strongly encouraged to apply.

Compensation: Interns receive a $3000 stipend.

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland’s most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland’s integrated transportation system. Interns can gain experience in policy development, marketing, international relations, computer networking, engineering, planning and financing, public relations, public administration, neighborhood conservation and in many other areas. Placement opportunities are available at the MD Aviation Administration, MD Port Administration, MD Transit Administration, Motor Vehicle Administration, State Highway Administration, MD Transportation Authority, and The Secretary’s Office that serves as Headquarters for the MDOT.

Participating student earn $3,500 during eight weeks this summer.

Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship

Stipend: $4,000 to $5,000
Fellowship Dates: June 7 - August 13, 2010

During a ten week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency, Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback. At the conclusion of the summer, Fellows will give presentations to the Mayor and various cabinet officials summarizing their placements and overall summer experience. The ultimate objective of the fellowship is to encourage talented individuals, with an interest in public service, to seek permanent positions within City government at the conclusion of their academic program.

Mayoral Fellows receive stipends and are placed in agencies based on their background, interests and the needs of the agencies and departments.

PAID Public Affairs Intern at NASA!

NASA is looking for a communications student with a strong interest in Web publishing and multimedia for their newsroom to help tell NASA Science stories. They want to reach new audiences through online media. The potential candidate would have available clips, strong writing and web skills as well as good news judgment. This is a part-time position of 20-24 hours per week during the school year. It is full-time during summers and breaks and can lead to continuing experience. NASA will participate in for-credit performance reviews as well as offer regular coaching and one-on-one mentorship for the duration of your experience. Owning a laptop a plus.

Spring 2010 Internship with the Internal Revenue Service in DC!

The Internal Revenue Service is recruiting undergraduate students of all majors for a paid 15-week long Spring 2010 internship! Accepted participants receive scholarships covering the costs of The Washington Center’s Academic Program in addition to providing furnished housing facilities during the internship. Interns will also be provided with living stipends.

Qualifications:
· United States citizenship;
· Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program of any major with a GPA of 3.5 or above;
· Undergraduate students must receive credit for participating in this program (if you have questions regarding this requirement, please contact katie.mckenzie@twc.edu);
· Available for a fifteen-week period beginning January 21st, 2010;
· Demonstrated experience and/or strong interest in working for the federal government.
· Preference will be given to students with evidence of community service or involvement.

How to Apply:

Web Design Internshp with Sinclair Broadcasting!

Web Design Intern for Sinclair Broadcasting!

Sinclair Broadcast Group's Corporate Web Department is looking for a web design intern to work approximately 20 hours per week. This is an _unpaid_ SPRING internship.

You will learn about the web design, maintenance and development of the television station websites and the intranet. You will assist with entry level tasks related to the development, maintenance and updating of all company websites and the intranet. IN ORDER TO GET YOUR INTERNSHIP/CO-OP/RESEARCH POSITION TO BE ADDED TO YOUR TRANSCRIPT:

1. Either call (410-455-2493) or stop by the Shriver Center on the ground floor of the Public Policy Building to make an appointment with a Coordinator.
2. Get a letter/memo from your employer (on company letterhead) verifying that you are interning 8-10 hours per week and bring it to your appointment.
3. Meet with your Coordinator to get enrolled in the Practicum (to have the notation put on your transcript as a university sanctioned experience) and have your potential credit options explained to you.
4. Enjoy your internship, co-op, or research position!

HACU National Internship Program: Summer Intern Deadline- 2/27

HACU National Internship Program program recruits college students for paid summer and semester-long internships at federal agencies and private corporations in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country. These ten and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a myriad of careers in the federal and corporate sectors.

To date, HNIP has helped over 7,000 students find internships that closely relate to their majors or career goals. Though we started in 1992 with only 24 interns working at one participating federal agency, we have expanded our program each year. In 2008, we helped match over 600 students to internships at over 40 federal agencies and corporations.

Internship Open House at Rams Head Live!

Rams Head Live is hosting an Internship Open House on Friday, February 13th for prospective intern applicants. The event begins at 9:00am at Rams Head Live. Rams Head staff will be conducting brief interviews with all candidates who attend! Students should bring an updated resume and their iPod, if owned. Students will also be expected to demonstrate an adept knowledge of and enthusiasm for live music.

Paid Web Master Intern Needed ASAP

Innovative Company (Encore Path- http://www.encorepath.com/about.html), located in the Canton Can Company is in need of a PAID Webmaster Intern ASAP ($2,500 for 180 hour internship). Encore Path is a UMBC spinoff company created in 2006 to develop stroke rehabilitation devices. Thier first product is the BATRAC which is a home-based exercise device for improving arm movement in stroke survivors with paralysis.

In December, Encore Path will launch a new eCommerce website. They expect to generate 90% of our sales through the website. The job of the webmaster is to optimize the website for maximum sales and keep the website current and fresh. This includes:

A Thanksgiving Message from the Shriver Center

Are you dreading that Thanksgiving conversation?

You know, the one that goes something like:

Family-member: So, what are you going to do next summer?

You: I don't know, probably the same thing I did last year.

Family Member: Well, with all the news about the economy, I don't think it's smart to put all your eggs in one basket. And you know you can't mooch off of us another year.

To get started stop by the Shriver Center October 21, 22, or 23 between 9am and 4pm for the Spring 2009 Kick Off. Simply bring an electronic copy of your resume on a USB drive or CD and we'll get you set up on UMBCworks and ready to look for positions THAT DAY!

Shriver Center on the Road: Visit T. Rowe Price

VISIT T. ROWE PRICE TO LEARN ABOUT SUMMER 2009 INTERN POSITIONS on FRIDAY, November 14th

Instead of bringing the companies to campus, we’re taking you to the company!

Join your Shriver Center internship coordinators on FRIDAY, November 14th from 11:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. as they take you out to visit T. Rowe Price. Take a tour of the facility and hear about internship and future career opportunities within the Electronic Publishing and IT Department.

Transportation is provided, but an RSVP is required. You will receive confirmation of your registration prior to the trip date. Space is limited, so register early! Vans will leave the Shriver Center promptly at 11:15 a.m.

Student qualifications for T. Rowe Price visit include a 3.0 GPA and Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status required.

Majors: Computer Science, IS, Computer Engineering, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Communications. Students with interest in IT, help desk support, data systems, web design, graphics or publications are strongly encouraged to register.

Students who have obtained or currently have an internship, research or cooperative education position, can receive a transcript notation by enrolling in the Shriver Center’s PRAC course and may be eligible to earn academic credit as a university sanctioned experience.

Ending Sweaty Palms: Intern and Co-op Interview Skills Workshop

Do you have an interview coming up for an internship or co-op or just need some interview help?

Participate in The Shriver Center's hour long Intern and Co-op Interview Seminar to:
- obtain assistance with what questions to prepare for
- how best to answer questions based on the skills and experiences you offer
- learn what to wear
- and obtain additional tips on the types of questions you should ask during an interview.

PAID Graphic Design & Marketing Internship in Canton

Encore Path (http://www.encorepath.com), which is located in Baltimore- Canton, is interested in hiring a Graphic Design student. The internship pays $12 per hour.

The intern will help develop marketing materials for the early 2009 launch of its first product, an exercise device for stroke patients. Duties include developing hardcopy marketing materials, booth displays for trade shows, and updating a new website that will launch in Sept 2008.

Required Credentials
Marketing coursework, demonstrated interest in marketing and graphic design

Once you meet with a coordinator, we will send your resume to organizations that interest you. In other words, we'll do the mailing and employer outreach on your behalf.

IN ORDER TO GET STARTED, PLEASE:
1) Make an appointment to meet with a coordinator to get your resume reviewed if you have not done so already. Stop by the Shriver Center office (1st floor UMBC Public Policy Building) or call 410-455-2493 to schedule the appointment. The appointment will take no longer than half an hour. Instructions on where to upload your resume can be found at:

During our meeting, we will review your resume, go over your credit options, and show you how to apply to positions.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE AN INTERNSHIP/CO-OP or RESEARCH position and just want credit or an internship/co-op/research notation on your transcript, please call our office to make an appointment to see a coordinator. We will simply need a letter/memo from your employer verifying that you are working at least 8 to 10 hours per week. If you found your position using UMBCworks, you will not need to provide this information.
