Solving Your Organizations Problems

The workshop will be an introduction to the Bridge Technique, a technique used to help groups address problems and develop ways to correct or overcome those problems. Participants will take part in a discussion using the same techniques employed by the Leadership Consultants in personal consultations with student organizations.

It's Homecoming Time! From October 18-21 this year we will be celebrating Homecoming with some fantastic events.

Thursday 10/18: Join us on Erickson Field for a Bonfire and BBQ followed by Transformers on the outdoor screen. All is free and all are welcome.
Friday 10/19: Ice Cream and Fireworks on Erickson field at dark, followed by a free Student Talent Show in the UC Ballroom at 9:30pm.
Saturday 10/20: Jim Gaffigan in the RAC at 8pm. Get your $10 tickets at the Commons Info Desk.

Study Participants Needed

Earn $25
The Interactive Systems Research Center (ISRC) in the Information Systems Department is looking for participants for the 2nd phase study of a research project "Informal Note Taking on Mobile Devices". This project has been approved by the IRB with the approval number of YO8AS12017. The experiment will take no more than 2 and half hours spread over 3 sessions in 2 consecutive days. The first session will be about 90 minutes with 2 follow-up sessions of approximately 15 minutes each. At the last session participants will be paid $25 in cash for their time and effort.

Participants should NOT have Graffiti 2 experience and have NOT been involved in our previous studies of this project. If you meet the requirements, please contact Liwei Dai (email: liweid1@umbc.edu; office phone: 410-455-3956) of your preferred time slots and contact methods. The experiment will be conducted in the ITE building, room 443.

Your participation is very important for our research and will be highly appreciated!

SEB Football Fest Sign-up

To celebrate the 2007 football season, The Student Events Board will be
hosting a football fest on Saturday, Nov. 3. from 12-5pm. There will be
free food, large inflatable games, and other fun activities.

The event will also consist of a 7 on 7 flag football tournament between
student organizations. Our goal is to find several representatives of
different student groups to participate in the tournament. Winners will
receive prizes. If any student organizations are interested in playing in
the event, please contact Brandon McClary at mcclary1@umbc.edu or stop by
the SEB office (Commons B210) on Tue. or Thursday between 1 and 3pm.

"Ideologies of Empires: The British Case and its American Echoes"

"Is the United States an empire? This question has generated a fierce
debate in recent years, a debate that hinges in part on how an empire
explains and justifies its role in the world. Dane Kennedy, Elmer Louis
Kayser Professor of History and International Affairs at George
Washington University, will examine the ideologies of empire that shaped
the British imperial experience and consider the extent to which
parallels can be found in contemporary America. Sponsors: The
Department of History and the Dresher Center for the Humanities.

Women's Self Defense Seminar

The UMBC Aikido Club will be hosting a second Women's Self Defense Seminar on
October 21st from 12-2 in the RAC fitness studio. It will be a class focusing
on defense and escape techniques in attack situations taught by an accredited
Women's Self Defense Instructor, Dr. Scott Sobel. It is a free seminar and no
pre-event sign-up.

If missed the first one, now is your chance to learn, and if you attended the
first one, come again to reinforce what you learned last week.

SHAKESPEARE Reading and Performance Group Presents "Othello"

Thursday, November 1st; 4 - 5:30 p.m. in Kuhn Library, 214 (The Honors
College and Dresher Center Lounge). Sponsored by UMBC’s Dresher Center
for the Humanities and the Department of English

The purpose of this group is to engage with a variety of Shakespeare’s
texts. The group will read specific texts, discuss them, play with them.
Readers of all levels and experience are welcome. Please arrive with
something to say about /Othello/ and a scene you'd like to hear aloud.
Please bring a copy of the play with you (complete texts available

will decide the play to read for the next.

U.S. Geological Survey Open House

Ancient Studies Week, October 25-31, 2007

There are many events taking place between October 25 through October 31. The events can be found on the Ancient Studies Web page, umbc.edu/ancs. We have a guest speaker from Phi Beta Kappa, Roger Bagnall who will speak on topics related Ancient Greece. Students will report on summer excavations. Matthew Amt, a re-enactor will do a presentation on Roman Warfare. These events are also sponsored by the Center for the Humanities and Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Assocation.
