Act, Speak, Build Week

Act, Speak, Build Week is coming up very soon, as in NEXT WEEK!! We are
looking for help tabling starting from 8 am throughout the day. As much or
as little as anyone can help will be greatly appreciated. I'm working on
getting us pizzas for lunch.

From April 7 to the 11 we will be tabling in the breezeway of the biology
building taking donations for the UMBC Habitat for Humanity. We're also
going to try and have baked goods to give to people who donate. We will
also have displays to help raise awareness of what Habitat actually does.
If anyone would like to help out with displays please let me know. We
would love some more help.

In addition to tabling, we will be sleeping out every night. You may
remember this from previous years. All are welcome to sleep out with us
or hang out at the table throughout the week.

If you'd like to sign up to table any of the days PLEASE email me will
your name and what day/times you would like to help out. We're trying to
get as many people involved in this week as we can. Ask your friends if
they'd like to come along and join our fun.

Thanks,

Sarah Gowland
Vice President - Habitat for Humanity

The film "Schultze Gets the Blues" (2003, Schorr) will be shown on
Tuesday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. in UC 310 as part of the Espaces

This is one of your LAST CHANCES to participate in the NSSE!!!

You haven’t been checking your UMBC e-mail account, have you?

Look for a message from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) on behalf of President Hrabowski on Tuesday, April 8th , and tell us about your UMBC undergraduate experience. Students who complete the survey by May 1, 2008 will be eligible for one of four $100 Amazon.com gift certificates.

The NSSE is a survey of freshmen and seniors at both public and private four-year institutions. It gauges the extent to which colleges are providing experiences associated with a quality undergraduate education and the extent to which students are engaged in their college experience. With sponsorship from the Offices of the President and Provost, UMBC first participated in 2000.

The results have been used with other information to make changes to curriculum, programs, and resources. In response to initial results, senior administration implemented a number of initiatives designed to increase student engagement and success, some examples include: first-year seminars, Introduction to an Honors University seminars, living learning communities, the new student book experience, and the faculty mentor program.

So…CHECK IT OUT, FILL IT OUT, and LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!!!

Institutional Review Board accepting applications!

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is currently accepting applications
from undergraduate and graduate students to join the IRB. Each year we
have one undergraduate and graduate student member. Students are
considered full members of the board. They review research protocols,
attend meetings, and vote on issues. The board typically meets 5 times
during the academic year: October, December, February, April and June.

Meetings are from 10 am-12 pm on Mondays. This is a terrific opportunity
to learn about ethical issues related to research. Being a member of the
IRB looks good on a /cv/ or resume.

Please email Susan Sonnenschein (sonnensc@umbc.edu)
no later than April 25, 2008 if you wish to
apply.

Your email should include a copy of your /cv/ and a few sentences
describing your research interests and experience.

Additional information about the IRB is found at http://www.umbc.edu/irb/.

Vote in the SGA Elections!!!

As you know, the 2008 UMBC student election is underway. I want to encourage you to vote today, and to ask your members to do the same. Among other things, you'll be electing the students who will set policies relating to student organization funding and make decisions about event-related requests. Please take a few minutes to read about the candidates and cast your vote!

To get to the SGA voting site, please use the following address: http://sga.umbc.edu/studentvote/

If you try to vote and find that technical problems (blank screens, etc.) prevent you from reaching the ballot, please send me an e-mail immediately at dhoffman@umbc.edu. Give me your UMBC username, which will help me figure out what the problem may be.

Remember, once you've entered the ballot and started the voting process, you must finish it (by hitting "submit") without hitting the "back" button or your vote will be invalidated.

It you want, you can change your vote right up until the election ends on Wednesday night at midnight.

Thanks for voting, and for passing this message along!

Day of Silence

The Day of Silence is a national grassroots youth movement to bring
attention to the physical and psychological harassment, bullying,
name-calling, violence, and death that faces lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, and queer youth and adults in schools all over the country.

When LGBTQ and Ally youth and adults have the courage to speak their
stories and stand up for their right to be who they are, they are often
met with violence and ostracism. Many of these youth and adults are forced
to choose instead to remain silent, for fear of the retribution they may
face otherwise.

Today, April 25th, 2008, we are silent to remember those who have been
harmed, harassed, and killed because of their sexual orientation, gender
identity, or gender expression. By wearing black and taking this vow of
silence today, we show that we do not condone violence in school against
LGBTQ and Ally youth.

During the day, Freedom Alliance members will be stationed in the Commons
and along Academic Row with information, black T-shirts, and black
bandannas. At 4:30 PM on Erickson Field at UMBC, we will break our silence
with a ceremony to share our experiences of the day and reaffirm our
pledge to work towards ending this silence throughout the year.

Free Bike Maintenance and Cycle-a-thon!!!

Hello Everybody,
On next Wednesday (April 30th), from 10am to 4pm, the cycling club is bringing an experienced bike mechanic on campus to provide basic maintenance to any student's bike, free of charge. Just bring your bike by the Commons Terrace, and Mr. Jon Posner of Race Pace Bicycles will get it ready for the spring and summer. Additionally, the cycling club is hosting a Cycle-a-thon to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation from Dawn 'til Dusk (7am-7pm). This will also occur on the Commons terrace on Wednesday, April 30th. Feel free to stop by and donate money to a great cause. If you are interested in participating in the Cycle-a-thon, please email me. The rain date for both events is the following Wednesday, May 7th.

President, Cycling Club
